Clippers Want to Deal Before July

Post#1 » by mkwest » Fri May 6, 2011 8:29 pm

"Every decision we make right now . . . it's going to be about playing right now instead of standing here [outside of the playoffs]. We've got three All-Stars on our roster all under 28-years of age and Eric Gordon. They've got great chemistry. We've got DeAndre [Jordan]. We've got some good role players, the youth with Eric [Bledsoe] and Farouq [Aminu] is there for the future."

"We need an impact veteran," said Neil. "A guy with leadership skills that has won at a high level that can show Eric and Blake how not just to get in the playoffs but how to be a factor in the playoffs."

"The fact that we don't have a [first-round] pick today doesn't mean we won't acquire one," said Olshey. "It's just the range of the draft where we were picking, I felt like we could do better using that space to acquire someone with an uneven deal with a trade or in free agency."

"We've got our core group. We've got Mo and Eric and DeAndre and Blake and Chris," said Olshey. "We've got some nice pieces but we're definitely another piece away from not just being in the playoffs but a factor in the playoffs."

"Having two seven-footers is an incredible luxury. All we have to do is look across the hallway at [Andrew] Bynum, [Pau] Gasol and Lamar [Odom] and know that you need length to compete in this league. When you've got one guy who is a big-time, mid-range pick and pop guy that can rebound and block shots [Kaman] - and another guy that's an above the rim finisher that can rebound and block shots [Jordan], you don't take that lightly."

And the Clippers intend to make something happen before the end of June?

"Absolutely, that's my goal," said Olshey. "We want to be aggressive or active. We're already on the phones. We'll see people in New Jersey and Chicago. The sooner we can add the pieces we need to ensure that we're a playoff team next year, the better off we're going to be."

It's good to have a better idea of what kind of moves the Clippers are looking to do this summer, but I think we need to hit a home run if we are considering moving the Minnesota pick. I like the idea of making a move prior to the July 1st, as it practically cements the core that we'll have before the new CBA is established. If there is a lockout, then there is no telling when we can begin adding players through free-agency or able to make trades. It also gives us the possibility to retain some of our free-agents even if we went over the cap (e.g. Craig Smith).

I got the feeling that we are not looking to trade any of the "core" players Olshey mentioned. That means we are looking for an SF and probably move minnesota pick for an SF.
I wish we could make a move for Granger

I'm not sure about that.

I think they'd trade Kaman, if the right Small Forward would be available. Though, that would also be a gamble, as we aren't able to re-sign DJ before the new CBA's worked out.

If we do try to use that 2012 Minny pick, then we couldn't do a trade before the draft, as long as we don't buy or trade for a 2011 first round draft pick.

The only players I'd be willing trade the Minny pick for as part of a package would be a resigned Howard, Paul or Deron Williams. There are no SF candidates out there worth involving the pick for - Granger, Iguodala and the others aren't worth it.

Re-sign Jordan. Sign Tayshaun Prince. Trade Kaman if a good deal comes along. That is what they need to do, in that order

^do $8.5 mil for him

^needs to bulk down a bit imo

::::
all this being said i think Aminu has promise as a point-forward not in HC settings. He thrives in transition but needs to improve his awareness and decision making this offseason

Looks like Paul Pierce is headed home to Los Angeles on draft night.

Sorry no source. U R so serious! When I was reading the quotes from the Clippers staff on the OP it just made me think you guys are looking for PP.

"We need an impact veteran," said Neil. "A guy with leadership skills that has won at a high level that can show Eric and Blake how not just to get in the playoffs but how to be a factor in the playoffs."

I think the Clippers should really look into a sign and trade with the Boston Celtics to acquire Jeff Green & Nenad Krstic. Really solidify the core and keep the cap flexibility.

Starters: PG - M. Williams/SG - E. Gordon/SF - J. Green/PF - B. Griffin/C - D. Jordan
Bench: PG - E. Bledsoe/SG - R. Foye/SF - A. Aminu/PF - R. Gomes/C - N. Krstic

That's a good looking 10-man rotation that know their roles. I would try to run with this team next season and see if that can get us into the playoffs.

The Celtics are in need of a center. Perhaps Kaman for Green and Kristic? Problem is that the Celtics would still have no back up for Pierce if Green is gone. Perhaps the Clippers could include Gomes or Aminu

Can't sign and trade a player and add another player to the deal from the team who does the signing part. (sorry if that wasn't clear but the C's can't make any trade w/ Green and Kristic in the same deal).

Therefore it'd have be 2 separate trades. I do agree the Pierce fits exactly what your owner described although Iggy makes more sense for you guys.

Granger and Gay also make more sense than Pierce but I doubt either of them gets traded.
