Well at least during this Lockout, NBA fans got some good news; The "Big Ego" Steve Javie is hanging up his whistle. While I think he should have been fired years ago, his knees are starting to breakdown. Maybe this is why a lot of refs are total arses; they realize they don't have a lot of time in the Bigs to make the $$$, so they become addicted to the T.V. cameras.
Maybe its time that Stern follows suit w/ former player Heyward Workman and start getting ex-NBA Bench Warmers turned Refs to call the games. Workman fought for his NBA career and knows the game inside & out, seeing that he was always working the Rule Book,wouldn't you want him now laying down the law?
W/ Javie's retirement maybe,just maybe Stern will start hiring NBA refs who love the game(like Workman) than the spotlight.

I'll never forget the grudge that Javie held against Blake last season against the Suns. He couldn't wait to blow his whistle on BG, because he felt disrespected. Nobody comes to the games to watch the refs. They need to perform their duties and remain unbiased and impartial. Unfortunately, that is hard for quite a few of them. A referee should never tell a coach that he is delighted "to watch (a coach) and (a) team die." It's disgusting. I wonder how much longer Knick Bavetta will be calling games.

It's funny that you mentioned Haywood Workman. I was actually thinking about him when thinking of refs that I don't care for. I liked him as a player, but I feel that he's made a fair amount of questionable calls when officiating Clipper games. I actually dread seeing that he's on the crew when it is a game that involves us.
