Fire Vinny Del Fail Thread

Post#1 » by LOJ » Fri Dec 30, 2011 9:19 pm

I don't see us getting far with VDN. His minutes distribution is so terrible, and he was never known for his defensive schemes. Our offense is always going to come, we have a very talented team that can get on runs quite easily, our defense on the other hand is a disgrace to watch. What coaches are out there that can get this team playing defense? Larry Brown?

I wouldn't mind a new coach but I'm at a point where it's wait and see what Vinny does with this talent. If we underachieve then he has to go. But way too early to tell right now.

2 early to tell, new system for cp3 and billups. bg and dj haven't really been doing their part in rebounding so that doesn't help...

i don't think they're putting in the effort, just yet. just like the lakers, they have to adjust is all. i just hope they adjust soon and hopefully comes earlier than the last 1/4 of games like last season.

The team has an option for Vinny's contract at the end of the season. We could part ways this upcoming summer or in 2013. There were rumors that a currently unemployed coach was inquiring about the team. My initial guess was Larry Brown, but according to a local radio show, it was Phil Jackson.

Vinny may become a great coach one day, but he isn't as of today. I like how he's willing to call out certain players if necessary. The environment is a lot less rigid than in the days of Dun, but is it enough to fully get the most out of these players? Not imo. If I were Neil, I'd let him coach out the season and then re-evaluate things then. There's a bunch of new players, so there needs to be some time to adjust. I'd opt out of his deal if a better opportunity presents itself, otherwise I'd probably keep him for the final year of his contract.

We were good in the past with Brown, but I don't want to bring him back due to his fickleness.

That doesn't really counter my point. It's too early in the season to blame the coach and with the shortened season and lack of a training camp (many of the players in the league are out of shape), a lot of teams are gonna look out of rhythm.

Based on his past, Vinny isn't a great defensive coach, and he's not the greatest offensive coach as his offensive sets can cause stagnation. I'm hoping he's learned some things and will show that he has improved. If not, whether one likes him or not, he will get moved after the season.

Vinny is a good coach to his players and can get them to give a good effort but he isn't really good at anything beyond that. He won't hinder a Griffin's development but the Clippers will need a new coach if they ever want to make a decent run at the title.

Here is a copy of his old playbook. Image

I'm hoping for the best. I wanted them to hire Dwane Casey last year, but the one thing I've been impressed with is that Del Negro gets guys to play hard. However, his strategies aren't the best. Larry Brown or Jeff Van Gundy would be good coaches for the Clippers

Jeff Van Gundy would be great, but somehow I don't see him coming back as a coach. I agree it's too early to tell, and unless we are an absolute trainwreck, we should let VDN finish out this season at least.

VDN is horrible coach, you're getting to the playoffs on talent not on coaching.

I still think you're overreacting. VDN cannot be blamed at this point. Our team has little depth and it's obvious this team is underachieving on the defensive end and on boards. Even if VDN is fired mid-season, I doubt we'll grab a serviceable replacement right now. The idea is lingering in the back of our heads but if you think it through, you know it's not going to happen until the time is right (BIG conflict to trigger it). Plus, lost two games against two REALLY good teams. Sheesh.

I think it's always good to give things time. DeAndre Jordan has great defensive potential, but he needs a proper coach to make him a defensive machine, and not just a shot blocker. Wiretap talks about the Clips being last in rebounding, and poor in opponent FG% (not sure about opponent eFG%, or offensive efficiency). Those are not good things to read, but it has been a few games, and stats like that can be heavily affected by outliers.

I checked the numbers, ans while the Golden State game was not that bad, the Clips were out rebounded in every game so far. In addition, the last two games, the deficit was 14 and 13, and that's with the Clips being a good offensive rebounding team, so defensive rebounding is awful.

DJ needs to focus more on rotating without going for blocks, and then focusing on rebounding. Him blocking 2-3 shots and grabbing 9+ rebounds is more valuable than him blocking 5 shots, but giving up offensive rebounds and dump off passes (likely the two main culprits for the rebounding problem and the high opponent FG%).

In addition, the bench can't rebound at all, so that affects things. Reggie will help with that a lot with that when he can play, but right now, that hurts

Vinny isn't a very good coach. Players like him, but he isn't very good with the X's and O's.

Best example - Vinny will say..."We need to get a bucket"...and leave it at that.
A good coach will lay out a plan on HOW to do it, what to expect, and how to counter it.

DJ is really starting to come into his own,but why hasn't he been tutored by Kareem or Hakeem? The Clips should see if both of those guys are available to work w/ our Bigs.
I also thought we should have gone after Kurt Thomas, he would have been a wonderful MENTOR for the Young Bigs, especially Trey & DJ.
Let's hope VDN starts preaching DE-FENSE!!

Too early for this thread. We won't hit out stride till 20 games in, with the new additions our offense and defense has had to adjust. I feel it's similar to Spoelstra's situation, people were calling for his head before the season started, but Riley was patient and it paid off. Not saying VDN is our answer for playoff success but he is NOT a horrible coach. To say that is just dumb.

For Chi fans saying he's horrible, try watching Dunleavy destroy your team for a few years, see: Ewing substitution, different player in the doghouse every year, stagnant turd of an offense...

hey i hate to derail this topic like this but ewing played great d. the last thing you wanna do is foul the 3-point shooter. bell just happened to hit an amazing shot.

everything else i agree with you. i think his job is safe for at least the rest of the season. also depends on who's gonna be available in the future offseasons.
