Upsetting news from Clipper Darrell

Clipper Darrel posted this sad message on his website today:
I don't why or how, but Clipper management should fix this.

It is with great sadness that I must report to all those in NBA NATION that I have been told by Clipper management they no longer want me to be Clipper Darrell, a name that was given to me by the media because of my unwavering support and team spirit. I am devastated!!!!
I have been a season ticket holder for over a decade and a FAN for over 15 years and have dedicated a major part of my life to support the Clipper organization and it’s players no matter what the season’s outcome. Over the years (400 home games) I have gone to great lengths to show my appreciation and loyalty in my attire, the car I drive and in my very own home. I’ve taken seriously the mantra of being “Clipper Darrell” in performing community service, mentoring young children and my participation in outreach programs. I’ve appreciated the struggles of the team to overcome obstacles as I’ve done in my life. I felt vindicated for all the years we as Clipper fans have gone through trials and tribulations and NOW we have a team that can win it all. Yesterday was the hardest day of my life, I felt powerless as a fan, as I was stripped of my identity however, no one can take away my heart and the love I have for my team!

This is absolutely ridiculous, and gives us all more reasons to hate the man in charge of this organization. They may have a good team, but the way this organization is run disgusts me.

Legal issue.

If he is going around and accepting/making money off of the name "Clipper Darrell" while sporting team merchandise, it is as though he is capitalizing off of the "Clipper brand" without actually being employed by the franchise. If someone were to go around calling themselves Apple Alex, Nike Nick, Pepsico Paul, etc., were making money off of appearances or promoting their own personal businesses under that name, they would be sent a cease and desist order and would be threatened to be sued.

“That’s when everything went haywire and they said I was trying to make money off sponsorships,” Bailey added. “If people are going to pay me to do some things, why not do it? I don’t see any harm in it as long as I’m not hurting the brand itself.

However, it's a bad PR move for the organization. It also makes you ask why now after all of these years? Neil Olshey may have the gift of gab, but the higher ups (that made this decision) like Andy Roeser do not. They're not telling him to not be a fan anymore, just not to promote himself like he has been under the moniker of "Clipper Darrell".

The whole legal thing would make more sense if the Clippers had a problem with it 5 yrs ago. Or 4 yrs ago. Or 3 yrs ago. Or 2 yrs ago. etc...

I'm a Lakers fan. But I've always had a soft spot for the Clippers because they're the other LA team. I just always disliked Sterling though. And now I dislike him even more.

They didn't seem to care about this while the team sucked.

Two of my friends went to a Clippers game two seasons ago and said the only thing they really remembered from it was Clipper Darrell going nuts and trying (and failing) to get the crowd behind the team when they were getting destroyed on the court. Roscoe is right, make him an employee.

Clippers statement regarding Clipper Darrell

“The Clippers have done absolutely nothing wrong or inappropriate as it concerns Darrell Bailey. His claims are absurd and unfounded. He has never been an employee or representative of the Clippers organization, and therefore cannot be terminated. The Clippers have never engaged Mr. Bailey’s services. When he has been in need, the organization has regularly provided him a seat for games. No good deed goes unpunished.

We have had multiple conversations with him concerning his inappropriate use of the Clippers’ team name and trademark for his own unmonitored commercial gain. We have spoken to him repeatedly about his desire to make public appearances in ways which improperly suggest that he is officially affiliated with our organization. In all cases and over a long period of time, he has consistently rejected our efforts to operate in consultation.

In a conversation with an authoritative and tenured Clippers’ executive last week, he was asked again to either consult with the team on all public appearances and/or commercial ventures, or stop undertaking those opportunities representing himself inappropriately. His response was an offer to stop representing himself commercially in that way and his offer was accepted in principle.

The next thing we heard was the baseless claims he has made today and the ensuing media rush to judgment.

We hold all of our fans in the highest esteem and we have been patient and generous with Mr. Bailey. He has not returned our support in an honorable way. He is not actually a fan of the Clippers, but a fan of what he can make off of the Clippers. We are no longer interested in that kind of association with him, and that is why we accepted his offer to remove our team name from his stage name.”

Some fans love him. Some fans hate him. I respect him for supporting his team in such a way. He's referred to as the Clippers' biggest fan, but others have paid far greater dues. This is why some don't like him, because they feel he is an attention whore. Ignorant people will say he was the only fan or some crap like that, but there have been fans that have been fans for much longer and never wavered. I won't hate on the guy and I do like what he has done as a fan over the years.

Making him an employee still presents problems. Is he given a salary/wage for being a fan? Why are none of the other fans being paid for showing up at every game and rooting/cheering? We've had fans that have been STH's for 20+ years. If he accepts money to make appearances as "Clipper Darrell", should the franchise collect that money and pay him a portion since he would be employed by them?

I do not know the full story or what kind of financial compensation that he has received, but he has admitted that he has been paid for appearances under the Clippers moniker. Now that the team has a better record, he has been in demand more than ever. If the higher ups have truly discussed this with him (in private) multiple times over the years, then there is not much he can say.

I'm not really sure what to think.

Reflexx mentioned why the organization didn't decide to say something sooner. I don't know why they would choose now and not talk to him sooner. Maybe they thought that when the team was bad Darrell would generate more interest at games or something. He's done plenty to generate fan interest and get others involved at games. I never liked ownership. If Darrell profits off the Clipper name why doesn't he and the organization make a deal by getting a cut of what he does. Others have also suggested that he be an employee. Maybe he should. They could give him a microphone at games and he could rally the crowd. I think there are better solutions to this than what I've read so far. And so the Clippers don't come out as bad on this.

i am torn.
they talked to him and gave him warning and he still kept doing. its not right to use a teams name logo to make money. there was a giants fan that team had the same issue with. fakers had a dancer they dumped for same issue.

i mean he did support the team but he was also a goof ball.

can you guys honestly say you weren't embarrassed by him at times??

i mean cp3/blake/dj said they want him back

hopefully they can just make him an employee

also remember when he almost sold out to cuban?? never been fan of his ever since (he actually went to dallas to do the job interview)

Bingo, and please guys, lets look at this with adult glasses. Look at the way he shot back with a "sentimental blog" to get back at the organization, purposely targeting the fans hearts. It was a very manipulative and vicious way to get back at the organization. Few people do things out of the goodness of their hearts, trust me this was beneficial for this guy, and very very fun.

MK pointed out that there have been fans who have been STH's for much longer, it's very true.

The Mavericks offered Darell Bailey a job. Why didn't he take it? Simple, when you have no restrictions in how you handle your business affairs it's usually more beneficial, you're self employed. He makes more money mooching off the organization, than any petty job they would give him such as "free season tickets". I'm sure Cuban's offer wasn't appealing at all, and I'm also sure he wouldn't allow Mr. Bailey to go ANYWHERE without the organizations consent, and without the Mavericks getting a large cut of the price.

Why did we allow him to continue when we were sucking? Why not? If anything the organization was taking care of HIM, allowing him to use the name, and the organization for his own personal gain. Even giving him free tickets from time to time. Now, he could make a legit career out of it with the attention we're getting, and the organization decided to put a stop to it. You were never employed, NOBODY FORCED YOU TO DO IT.

This makes us look bad, and it's another drop in the bucket of "we are a terrible organization". I had no problems with him before, and I can see why other fans were annoyed in the past. Get over yourself Darell Bailey, you proved them right. You're a selfish, annoying, immature, attention whore.

LOJ, you know I have to take that out lol.

I have no problem with darrell, but u can't make money off of someone elses brand. Thats like someone owning a company and a friend using the name of the company to sell knock offs of your products. He sells clipper darrell t-shirts, wristbands and etc...
