Hi, even though we wanted CP3 as well I come in peace

Question, if the appeal to the arbitrators ruling is denied, would the clippers consider giving out a huge but shorttermed contract to Chauncey Billups?

Say a 2year max deal where the 2nd year is unguaranteed if waived before the begin of the 2013-14 season.

That way you guys would probably get a pretty nice trade chip for next years deadline and especially for the 2013 offseason. I mean once Blake's extension kicks in this might be the only way to make a huge trade. And since the extra-super-duper tax comes in play shortly after, teams might salivate at the chance to immediately clear max-ish kind of money.

What do you guys think?

And Chauncey? He gets at least another full Max year so yeah, I think he'll consider that while rehabbing (even if he were to know that he couldn't return to form).

In no way shape or form is Chauncey getting a max deal.

Think Chauncey is great in a Clips Jersey, but we have to be realistic on how much we pay the guy.
It scares me a little that we don't have a GM in place for the Draft or Free Agency, but there again..... we are Clipper Nation.
If we can resolve the GM position w/ someone decent, I think players will want to play with Blake & CP#3.

If the ruling is overturned, we still have his Non-Bird rights that will allow us to give him 120% of his previous salary. Initially, we thought that only meant 120% of $2,000,032, but it is for his entire 2011-12 salary. We could technically offer him up to $17M without having his full bird rights. I don't see us giving him a big contract for the purpose of using him as trade bait. This season, both Mo Williams and Ryan Gomes are expiring contracts. Mo makes $8.5M and Gomes makes $4M. The new CBA allows us to take back an amount up to 150% +$100k in a trade, so they combine for nearly $19M combined. During the the 2013-14 season, Caron Butler will be an expiring contract of $8M. DeAndre Jordan will follow him in being an expiring in 2014-15.

So yeah with Sterling being the owner it doesn't necessarily look likely. But the thing is, with Chauncey (wheter you use the 120%, good point!, or the Bird Rights) if you give him a 2year contract where the 2nd year is unguaranteed if waived before say October 1st 2013, then you have a tool way more valuable then just an expiring contract. For a team that needs to immediately clear cap this would be insanely desirable in that after a trade they can immediately clear all that capspace. It's along the lines of what Dallas had with Erick Dampiers last year and could be used to maximize the flexibility of your franchise. And to top it all off, you could just as well waive him yourself if there's really no team that wants to clear space.

I mean imagine, worst case you have a team that is dying to create capspace in order to sign another player. If you guys are involved you could offer Chauncey for Draft Picks and 2-3 complementary role players around CP3 and Griffin, essentially allowing the team to then clear Chaunceys contract and use the space to sign their desired player.

The only question is, do you really want to pay Chauncey next season a high enough salary that he'll do this.

I don't know if that's allowed but theoretically you could also sign him to a one year max with a buyout in the 2-3m region where the buyout clause must be activated until the start of the 2012-2013 season. In essence this would grant you all of the above without first having to pay him, but also without Chauncey on your roster for the next year.

I get what you are saying those are nice options to have. I was hoping that something like that would be considered for the mere fact that he will be 36 and coming off of an Achilles injury whenever he starts playing. It is a possibility that his contract may be signed with some form of non-guarantee/partial guarantee, I just don't anticipate it being a huge contract.

If Mo Williams opts in, then we don't really have much breathing room between the salary cap and the tax threshold. We are in a position where we need to have mobile contracts/assets, but still be able to compete to the highest possible extent. We'll see how things shake out.
