CLIPPERS ACQUIRE GUARD WILLIE GREEN FROM ATLANTA
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

7/30/12

The Los Angeles Clippers today acquired guard Willie Green from the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for the draft rights to Sofoklis Schortsanitis. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not announced.

A nine-year NBA veteran, Green has averaged 9.1 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.5 assists over his career. In 53 games played for the Atlanta Hawks last season, Green tallied 7.6 points in 17.4 minutes per game.

Green was originally drafted by the Seattle Super Sonics with the 41st overall selection in the 2003 NBA Draft out of the University of Detroit Mercy. He was traded on draft night to the Philadelphia 76ers where he would play for seven seasons before being traded to the New Orleans Hornets prior to the start of the 2010 season. Green spent one season in New Orleans teaming up with Clippers’ point guard Chris Paul before signing with Atlanta as a free agent prior to the start of the 2011-12 NBA season.

Schortsanitis was drafted by the Clippers with the 34th pick of the 2003 NBA Draft but never played for the team. Schortsanitis most recently played for Panathinaikos Athens in Greece and Maccabi Tel Aviv in Israel.

Back-up SG that can actually shoot (85.7% FT, 44.2% 3P). If Billups misses time, then we have someone that can step in and provide some solid minutes off of the bench.

We used a TPE to acquire him, but don't know which one yet. Sofo was never going to play for us. In S&T deals, the contract must be a minimum of 3 years, but only the 1st season needs to be guaranteed.

I like Willie Green, and Chis Paul does too. We're filling that bench with good character guys.

Clippers acquire veteran guard Willie Green

Image

The Clippers have acquired veteran free-agent guard Willie Green from the Atlanta Hawks in a sign-and-trade deal in exchange for the draft rights to Sofoklis Schortsanitis.

Green, a nine-year veteran, will get a one-year deal for the veteran's minimum of $1.2 million.

Green, 31, who averaged 9.1 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.5 assists over his career, played the 2010-11 season with Chris Paul with the New Orleans Hornets.

Green is considered a combo guard who can play both point and shooting guard; he averaged 7.6 points in 17.4 minutes a game last season in Atlanta.

He could play a significant role for the Clippers if guard Chauncey Billups is not able to start the season while he recovers from surgery on his left Achilles’ tendon.

There has to be more to the details. We could have given the minimum without a trade.

Only can control what I can.

Travis Leslie

Strong possibility. We're at 14 now with Leslie being the only player that isn't fully guaranteed for the season. We usually start the season with 14 and leave the 15th spot open for flexibility. I hope that Leslie gets the opportunity to earn a spot in training camp, but it is what it is. He needs to show improvement, otherwise he won't be with the team next season (either cut or in the D-League).

I hope Leslie gets the spot on the roster, I think he deserves it to get a chance to finally try and show improvement.

But on the signing, I think our off season has been very overlooked. Great pickups, really happy with Green as well.

They played together and grew close a bit after Green's sister died while CP was in NO. (From what I've read)

Don't mind Willie. I like that he shot a career high 3PT% last season, and if he can shoot close to the 40% mark again, then I really like this pickup. He's a solid stable insurance type guy. You don't want to have to rely on unproven guys in case an injury happens. Green will play hard, he can score, defend okay, and he can actually create his own shot a little.

He was generally not an efficient scorer, and I wasn't a fan due to that, but the last three seasons he has been better, and he was great last season.

As for Leslie, being a 2nd round pick is hard enough, but getting injured certainly didn't help him.

Man, talk about a roster overhaul. Seems like we signed half the roster this offseason. I think it's a good pickup. I remember when he used to be for the Sixers, he was a pretty solid roleplayer.

Another solid signing! I don't think we have made any great moves on there own, but overall we have had a great offseason.

Interesting trade. Not that I don't care much about Green, but the question of "is Sofo coming this year?" is finally gone. haha

It's a solid pickup. Another player that is able to hit shots if left open.

3 year deal starting at $1.375M. The final 2 seasons are unguaranteed. We probably used the Reggie Evans TPE on him.
