Shelburne: Griffin can't wait to be great

Most comets burn up once they enter the Earth's atmosphere.
Griffin never foresaw any of it, though. He knew people would want more from him and that he would want more from himself. But the backlash? The hatred on Twitter? The reputation as a flopper and a complainer? No, he didn't see any of that coming.
"I just didn't realize so many people would try to attack you and bring you down," he says. "I guess I was naive, but I didn't expect it."
You can tell there's a part of him that is wounded by the way it's gone. He's not motivated by proving people wrong. He doesn't need a chip on his shoulder.
He simply wants to be as great as he can be and not one inch less.
The Clippers gave him a personality test as a rookie. He came back as a classic perfectionist.
It surprised him at the time. He's fastidious and organized. He runs early to meetings, never late. But he lets things slide all the time. Now he sees it, though.
"I was talking to [Clippers shooting coach] Bob Thate the other day and he was like, 'You know what I've realized about you? Even if you shot 90 percent from the free throw line, you're going to be pissed that you didn't shoot 93 percent,' " Griffin says.
He smiles a little, recognizing that Thate has nailed him.
Every day, he smiles a little bit more. He is better able to see himself now, where he really is and where he needs to go.
It's coming. It's just never going to be soon enough.

Very good article, Blake is a really hard worker, which is something that gives a lot of hope about how much he will continue to improve

Lion King....lol
I'm interested to see what he does with the offseason. He's injured right now, but should be back to normal in a few weeks.
2009 offseason: injured shoulder in summer league
2010 offseason: recovering from kneecap fracture
2011 offseason: lockout
2012 offseason: torn meniscus during Olympic Training Camp
I know that he's willing to put in the work, I just hope that he focuses on the right things. I wanted to see him on the Team USA for the simple fact that he'd spend a month or so surrounded by the league's greatest players and some of basketball's best minds. You're not going to have that particular collection of talent together (i.e. LeBron, Kobe, Melo, Durant, etc.) in that type of setting again. It's a missed opportunity.
We've been clamoring for him to link up with Hakeem for the longest. It was supposed to happen last summer, but didn't. Hopefully it finally manifests this summer. The tools are there, it's all about putting them to use with decisiveness. He's made strides at the foul line thanks to Thate, but he still has a ways to go on the shooting front. I'm hoping that we hire a defensive-minded coach this time around, which will help him become a better 2-way player.

Great article.
I've honestly never read or heard Griffin's opinion on flopping and always have wondered what he thinks.
Griffin seems like the misunderstood bad guy, if people actually read article's like these and not just saw the 'youtube Blake Griffin' I wonder how many people's opinions would change on him.
I can tell he's genuinely a hard working basketball player. He doesn't try to flop or do anything dirty, he just truely want's to be the best he can be.

his opinion on it is what I've thought for a while. There's times where he's obviously flopped to get a call and there's other time where he just moves his head back to not get hit in the face. IDC about people who don't watch our team and hate. Anybody who watched all 88 of our games this year and says this guy was flopping is a joke.

i like the idea.
however, I think ppl (not u specifically) need to taper our expectations of what we'll get out of him in the post. Quite simply, his physical dimensions limit him. The longer guys are probably going to bother him his entire career. His ceiling won't be Kevin McHale.
what I'm hoping for is that there is no injury this offseason that limits him and that the work with Thate this offseason can finally come to fruition. The Kid shot 80.8% from the FT line this series - something Thate's doing is working. I'm interested to see what an offseason with no limitations and 1000-2000 jumpers a day can do for him.
development is never linear.
who knows when that neo moment will come. But jeez can u imagine when it gets here.

The thing abut Hakeem's work is that he doesn't just go and teach every player the same thing. He molds the sessions to the players strengths and body type, etc. He watches film and finds what guys do well and improve on that.
Firstly, just becoming a better jump shooter will improve Blake's post game. Secondly what Blake actually needs to learn is how to make one or two of his moves his main go to move(s) and then build counters from that, as well as decision making as a post scorer. The rest will just be refining his moves in terms of body positioning, etc. Him and DJ should go together so they can work on things together after.
Love the upward trend in FT shooting and shooting overall.

Blake was beloved in his rookie year. But because he is so good at such a young age, a lot of losers out there will want to bring him down. Those kind of people will always exist in sports, rather than appreciate a great talent they choose to be miserable due to their own misfortunes and jealousy.
It's just the way it is, in every major sport. Learn to ignore the BS.

It's not like Blake is flopping all game long. He fakes it once or twice per game and that's enough to get opponents in foul trouble or to swing momentum. To say he doesn't flop at least a time or two each game would be disingenuous. Blake dives a little bit as part of his strategy.

before I respond to that.
answer these questions:
1) who are you?
2) how many Clipper games have you watched this year in their entirety?
if your answer to number 2 isn't in the 75-88 range, do not speak on what he does once or twice each game and you will not be receiving an educated response to ur blurb above.
