Sounds like to me, reading between the lines, that they respected VDN as a PERSON, but not as an X's and O's COACH. And he said "he did the best he could do", meaning, he's not a very good coach but he tried... Am I the only one that read those quotes that way?

It does sort of come off that way. Don't think anyone buy maybe DJ didn't like him, or don't respect him, but they might not have valued him highly as an x and O's guy.

I think the "he did the best he could" though might be him implying the Vinny was a hard worker as a coach
