Chris Paul accepts 5 year, $107M contract with Clippers

Chris Paul to accept Clips' extension

Chris Paul is expected to verbally agree to a five-year, $107 million contract extension with the Los Angeles Clippers shortly after the team is able to officially offer it to him, beginning at 12:01 a.m. ET Monday morning, sources have told ESPN.

Paul's decision to stay with the Clippers is hardly a surprise. The only suspense remaining is when and how he will officially accept. Paul cannot sign his new contract until July 10th but he can agree to terms before then.

Paul tweeted earlier Sunday from the BET Awards in Los Angeles, and thus might not be in position to agree to terms Sunday night. But it won't be long afterwards.

I hope that he verifies his intention so other FA's may want to come & win in L.A. w/ him. Now it is time to call or knock on Matt Barnes house.

Haha, yeah I remember. I just kinda lost interest in participating in forums. I mean, I liked the old one we were all in cause it was a small family of Clipper fans. When that went down, I stopped participating. I do ghost through forums a lot though, and may put in my 2 cents from time to time.

Chris Paul announces he will re-sign with Clippers

Paul will sign a maximum five-year deal worth $107.3 million with the Clippers. But the All-Star point guard can’t sign his contract until the NBA lifts its moratorium on July 10.

He’ll earn $18.8 million in the first year of the deal.

NBA executives said it had always been a formality for Paul to remain with the Clippers after the hiring of Doc Rivers as coach and senior vice president of basketball operations with the team last week.

Paul didn’t even talk to any other teams when the free-agency period opened at 9:01 p.m. Sunday.

Chris Paul Contract

Post#12 » by Cane4Ship » Mon Jul 1, 2013 7:01 pm

Hi all,

Orlando Magic fan here, but wanted to congratulate you on the re-signing of CP3.

Apologies if this has been discussed already but while reading, CP3 agreed to a $107million contract, I've been hearing the max a player can earn under new CBA ruling (with 5 years) is $118 million, does this mean CP3 took a pay cut of sorts?

Also, does it come along with a opt-out clause (similar to how in the previous CBA)?

Cheers!

Check out Larry Coon's CBA FAQ. It tells you everything you want to know about contracts.

A "maximum contract" varies from player to player based on the amount of years in the league and the amount of their previous salary.

-The maximum for a player coming off of a rookie contract (i.e. 0-6 years NBA experience) will command 25% of the salary cap.

-The maximum for a player coming off of his 2nd contract (i.e. 7-9 years NBA experience) will command 30% of the salary cap.

-The maximum for a player with 10+ years of NBA experience can command 35% of the salary cap.

-The maximum salary of a new contract is never less than 105% of the player's previous salary which takes priority over the general maximum salary percentages (i.e. 25%, 30% or 35% of the cap).

In other words, Dwight Howard's potential max salary is greater than Chris Paul's potential max salary.

This is going to be HUGE throughout the rest of free agency. Players we're interested in will be more open to coming here and possibly taking less money after seeing how sure CP3 was he wanted to come back here.

Very happy and very excited. Let's round up this roster next, then Doc coach em up!

It's a photoshop, but would be hilarious if it was real.
