Conversations with people who don't watch the Clippers

Post#1 » by Quake Griffin » Tue Jul 30, 2013 11:30 pm

I feel this thread is necessary.

Feel free to post the problems you run into having conversations with people about the Clippers who DO NOT watch the Clippers....or may have seen them 4 or 5 times on National TV and the other 8-10 times loosely watched the scoreboard while shooting pool at their local pub, saw the score at the end and made conclusions about the team.

Exhibit 1.
I'm telling this attorney that Im clerking for that Chris Paul has been the most clutch player in the league over the last 2 seasons.

he dismissed me as if what I said was ludicrous, factually incorrect and not even close. Then dropped names like Durant and Melo blah blah blah....but CP3 wasn't even in the discussion

i wont even post every youtube clip of game winners he's hit in the last 2 years.

go ahead.
give me ur stories. real life ones are much better than on the board.

Typically, I don't tend to discuss the Clippers when talking to people about basketball. Some people can't talk about the sport/league without focusing on their team. Anybody that lives in SoCal knows what I'm talking about ;) I'll usually let the other person bring up the Clips otherwise I keep it moving.

I don't expect fans of other teams to have a full grasp of the team like I would a fellow fan, but some do feel that they know your team better than you. There's misconceptions and biases. Some are going off of perception or the past rather than the present. Some of it I blame on the media and tv analysts. They spout off some bad information quite often and a lot of people take that information and regurgitate it.

I totally agree- a particularly egregious example is Charles Barkley. I usually don't mind his commentary- but he has been so negative and mostly wrong about the Clippers, particularly Blake Griffin. Anybody who thinks Griffin is soft is very misinformed or just outright biased.

To name a few,I live in a very football (soccer) oriented place and not many watch Basketball

Blake Griffin is regressing every year ala Tyreke Evans

CP3 was dumb to stay with the Clippers and that will cost him a ring

Blake Griffin doesn't have an ounce of defence in him

Blake Griffin has no post game

Chris Paul is a poor playoff performer

Houston and GSW over Clips

Clips are a regular season team even with Doc Rivers

Bench is overrated

Kevin Durant is far and away a better player than CP3

Unbalanced roster (saw this on BR)

They are a jumpshooting team

Very streaky team (isn't ENTIRELY true but still KINDA is)

17 game win streak is because of schedule (we didn't play tankers 17 times in a row)

Blake Griffin is lazy and doesn't work hard

Chris Paul stayed for the money

AND FINALLY!

ALL BLAKE GRIFFIN DOES IS DUNK!

Anything Blake Griffin-related is a good bet. I don't think I've ever had a conversation in real life with someone who's not a Clipper fan who could give me a half ok analysis of Blake as a player. He's one of those polarizing players I guess.

Paul being a bad playoff performer is a specially frustrating one.

People assuming we didn't have a chance against Memphis in the last post season is a pretty common one, when in reality it could've gone either way.

I'm not even a Clips fan. In fact, i'm not a big fan at all of them. I'm that guy who says Blake is a flop. He is. As a Celtic fan Pierce was always a flop. It's a whack trait to have but most ppl have it. It's not a big deal. ANYWAYS.. Those are some of the stupidest sayings i've ever heard lol. Jesus like 95% is terribly wrong. It's kinda funny actually.

i don't really define him as a flop... i define him as a big man that needs to exaggerate to get the correct call..

if he doesn't go down, it's either a no call or a blocking foul.

I think CP3 is our flopper of the year... but no one can beat leflop... that guy is a tight end and plays like a running bull... BG at least takes full contact hits and goes down... leflop can't even have a hand near him or he hits the deck...

as for pierce... that wheelchair act... lawlcakez bro. emmy award winning performance, i mean he is from LA so i expected nothing less than hollywood performances lol

Clippers are a fast break team has been one that has been perpetuated by analysts and those that only watch highlights.

Blake is regressing is just poor because even the numbers don't suggest that if you look beyond raw numbers

Clippers lost in the playoffs because they couldn't score enough. Yea, scoring wasn't great, but it's pretty daft to not notice that the loss was solely due to horrible defense.

I don't expect people to know everything, but some things just require at least a bit of effort outside of repeating what some TV guy said or seeing the latest highlight video.
