Source: Clips sign Antawn Jamison
The Los Angeles Clippers have agreed to sign forward Antawn Jamison to a one-year deal worth the veteran's minimum, a source close to the situation told ESPNLosAngeles.com on Monday.

"I'm just happy to be a Clipper and contend for a championship," Jamison told ESPNLosAngeles.com.

The 37-year-old Jamison will likely surpass 20,000 career points early next season.

Jamison played through torn wrist ligaments for much of the second half of last season with the Lakers. He had offseason surgery and expects to be 100 percent at the start of the season.

Clippers, Antawn Jamison reach one-year deal

"I'm glad that everything got done and I'm ready to compete for a championship," Jamison told Yahoo! Sports. "This is a good fit for me."

Jamison initially expected to sign with the Clippers earlier this month after having a productive dinner meeting in Los Angeles with new Clippers president-coach Doc Rivers. He was dejected when he was told on Aug. 15 that the Clippers were instead focused on re-signing their own free agent in forward Lamar Odom.

The Clippers renewed their interest in signing Jamison and contract talks got stronger over the past weekend.

Not liking this signing at all. No defense and probably can't stay healthy. Perfect backup for BG.

I am indifferent w/ this pick up, but I do know that the Lakers didn't use him to his full capabilities. I hope that he can fit in, but I know he is probably #12 or #13 in the rotation. Antwan says he is healthy which I don't know if he was last year, he is getting up in age, but he is a smart player, if anything he could be a positive team member in the Locker Room & the Bench.

I'm torn on this one. First of all it sure looks like their is enough truth to the Odom rumors to scare the team away. Sad to hear, hopefully he is OK. It sounds like he won't be in the NBA next season. As for Jamison. He's older and coming off wrist surgery. I'm not sure how much I like that combo. He is a better player than just about everyone left if he's right. This is a guy that averaged 17 PPG 2 seasons ago. Hopefully that is the player we get! If he can score like that off the bench it will more than compensate for his weaknesses. Our bench won't be able to rely on defense nearly as much without Bled. Every player off the bench can score, so it could still be a very good bench.

Like many others, I am concerned about Jamison's defence and health. I wouldn't mind using jamison in small bursts with the regular starting lineup crew (obviously when BG needs a break). a lineup of: CP3, Reddick, Dudley, Jamison, Jordan creates unbelievable floor spacing and a lineup of: Collison, Crawford, Bullock, Barnes, Mullins i think will be better defensively than having antwan on the court.

from what was left available, i don't see a problem with this move although i hope at this point that brandon davies can rebound and play some D when needed. i didn't want to believe Lamar was on drugs, but if true we surely do not want his drama anywhere near our locker room when this upcoming season is so crucial to our success. i definitely see going after a capable bench big who can cover both PF and C by trade deadline offering jamal and antawn as they both can be expirings if jamal's team option isn't picked up.

in the end, i don't trust mullens to be a clutch shooting stretch 4. he is more like randomly jacking poor volume shooter. if i want my PF taking a long J with a game on the line, i would much rather prefer it to be jamison's.

how many players can you carry actively?

is it 12?
i want Davies....i want a legit back up 4...and I'm willing to roll the dice on him because at this point, we need to make a deal.

I'm also indifferent. He could be a pleasant surprise, but at the same time, he will likely just magnifiy our lack of interior defense. I would have just went with whoever can provide some sort of rebounding and defense, including d-league players and unsigned rookies. We're so lopsided on offense that any sort of defense would probably have a pretty big impact. Maybe our plan is to give Jamison some burn and showcase him off, and then trade him for a defensive minded big?

Well in terms of filling that stretch big man role, barring improvements, Mullens actually did not fill that role, so Jamison does since he can actually shoot. Now there's a stretch 4 and a stretch 4/5, woot!

Of course we all wanted some defense from the front court off the bench, and this doesn't do that, but I'm just going to go with it. We'll see how it goes, if it doesn't work, trades are still possible, and Odom could technically still be signed later, but Clips are in tax range now.

Clips will likely sign a defensive big as their final roster spot. In the meantime, Jamison gives them a backup big who can actually score. Not many other options out there.

CourtVision: What Does Antawn Jamison Bring to the Clippers?

As a scorer, Jamison is much less aggressive than he used to be, which is typical of aging NBA players. Last season, more than 40 percent of his shots came from beyond the arc. During his recent run in Cleveland, that number was only 27 percent. Furthermore, Jamison also set a career-low in field goal attempts per 40 minutes last season. Although his overall field goal percentage spiked last season with the Lakers, this has more to do with his shooting fewer 2-point jumpers than it does with any improvement in his shooting accuracy. In fact, Jamison hardly shot any long 2s last year — he attempted only 1.3 per 40 minutes, down from 4.9 only one year before, a stunning depletion.

The bottom line is that the current incarnation of Jamison is pretty much a 3-and-D guy without the D. His shot chart resembles that of Shane Battier or Martell Webster, with lots of distance shooting and activity close to the basket, while the midrange cupboard is bare — something that has never been the case with him.

2012-2013 Shot Chart

While skeptics clearly have enough ammunition to downplay Jamison’s potential impact in Clipperland, Clips fans can still be hopeful that he can make a meaningful bench contribution to his new team. It’s fair to assume that he will be happier with Doc Rivers than he was with Mike D’Antoni, and it’s probably also fair to imagine he’ll find a more compatible role with the Clippers as well.

Deal makes me sick why the hell did we not talk to Harrington first as aback up plan.

Clips did. They waited this long because they knew Harrington would get waived. They contacted him immediately, but he didn't show much interest.

Waste of a signing. Not like it'll impact the team much. But damnit this squad needs either a back up bruiser who can score some buckets in the post come hell or highwater, or a high intensity defense minded thug (ala Birdman).

**** man, we can actually use a Collin's brother at this point... that's just horribly sad to say :/

JAMISON BRINGS LEADERSHIP, ADDED SHOOTING TO CLIPPERS

Image

“It’s a lovely facility,” the 37-year-old forward said.

“The only thing they’re missing is a championship. That’s the only reason why I’m here. I’m glad that things worked out. It took a while for it to get done, but patience is a virtue. And we were able to get it worked out and I think I can come in and contribute and be that piece that makes this organization very special.”

“I’ve always been consistent. Being a vocal leader out there on the court, being able to talk, it really helps out everybody else. I’m not the best defensive player, but team defense I think goes unnoticed a little bit. He told me, ‘I’m not going to put you on an island, but if you get to the spots I need you to get to, you’re going to be fine.’ Those are the things I think people take for granted: understanding, being able to have that basketball IQ. And I think you’ll see a little bit of that.”

Jamison paused, tilting his head towards Rivers’ office that overlooks the court.

“I think he’ll have our ears, we respect him, he’s won it,” he continued. “He’s probably one of the best coaches in the league today. Having him will pretty much speed up the process, but this is a team that can win right now. And that’s the one thing that really intrigued me. I like the makeup and I think adding me as a certain piece to this puzzle, we can really make this organization special by winning. And in my heart I really didn’t want to go anywhere else.”

Ehh hope Jamison surprises us fans. Maybe Barnes will bulk up too much and be that smaller PF bruiser...
