Shawn Kemp and Gary Payton vs. Blake Griffin and Chris Paul

Post#1 » by vsanvictores » Fri Sep 6, 2013 8:57 pm

In lieu of this video posted on the nba youtube channel

one of the top comments is this guy saying that they are way better than CP and BG right now and I thought I'd just spark a debate. CP3 shoots at a higher efficiency, gets more assists, maybe he isn't the defensive monster Gary was but he gets his share of steals right? I was too young to really get into basketball during the 90's (born '93) to really make good judgement. I don't know much about Shawn Kemp so I can't really compare him to Blake but they both look like athletic gods on the court.

GP has gotta be the best defensive PG ever, so GP vs CP3 would be an amazing thing to see... CP3 would most likely win though since he can shoot better than GP.

Kemp vs BG... when it comes to dunking during their designated eras? gotta be a tie methinks

CP3 and Gary are both beasts
But Kemp is still ahead of Blake imo

i really do not care about all these comparisons. Griffin is in his athletic prime but not his real prime. So i'll wait.

I do want to say that I think Chris Paul's pitbull mentality going against the glove's mouth would lead to a fight...some kind of altercation.
and I'm in for that.

Kemp never had a 20 and 10 season. Blake already had 2 in his first 3 years. Blake is also the better passer. Kemp's advantage is that he was a much more reliable FT shooter. But Blake is still improving on that.

Kemp also was a good shot blocker and maybe a better defender, I would still take Blake though, he comes with less baggage.

This was my thought, I remember him/the Clippers getting a bit testy with Vasquez:

Paul and Payton are both great players, Payton is a very good and fiesty defender, can't really say how the matchup with Paul would go, they would both get theirs really. He said he didn't like guarding Stockton's pick and roll barrage so much, and he will certainly be running into a lot of screens against Paul, and Paul also has very good iso ability, though maybe that isn't the best strategy against Payton. Then again, he's able to iso against a guy like Tony Allen, so who knows. Payton would then go at Paul in the post where he has the height advantage, and though Paul is a strong, stocky and fiesty guy and won't just get pushed around in the post, but he can be shot over. It would be a fun matchup, maybe a lot of fun dunks.

Griffin was 23 years old last season, so a comparison would have to be based on Griffin's first 3 seasons and Kemp's first 4 seasnos. Griffin is the better offensive player, as much as he's hated on about his offense, and though Kemp was the better shooter, he had big turnover issues. Kemp on the other hand is the better defender and rebounder, but then he had fouling issues that limit his minutes.

It would certainly be a fun matchup to watch
