The Los Angeles Clippers have signed veteran big man Lou Amundson to a non-guaranteed contract, according to sources with knowledge of the move.

The deal allows the Clippers to bring Amundson to training camp to give him a chance to make the team.

The Clippers have 14 players under contract, leaving open the possibility they'll sign one more player before opening night to carry the league maximum 15.

Amundson, 30, has been playing in pickup games at the Clippers' facility recently after stints with three teams last season: New Orleans, Chicago and Minnesota.

Good signing. When he played in Phoenix he was very solid off the bench. If he makes the team, he might give you guys some quality minutes.

It's a good signing for an end of bench / energy player for sure. He'll be a good practice and go out and give energy guy if he makes the team.

Is Amundson primarily a 4, a power forward?

Meh, a lot of mediocre bigs don't make a talented one. Neither Admundson nor Hollins, Mullens or Jamison ahould see any court (other than garbage time) on a good team. Not to beat on a dead horse, but unless Deandre turns into Roy Hibbert or Doc finds some incredible small ball line up, I can see us being dissapointed this season.

as much as i love Matt Barnes...giving him most of that mid level killed our chances of picking up a quality back up big in the offseason.

it took our chances at Landry from slim to 0.
and made any chance we had at signing Speights slim...and he still got signed for relatively cheap.

If I'm the Clippers...im working the phones with Toronto and getting Psycho T out of them since he doesn't want to be there anyway.
is he good?...meh....is he tough and will he deliver a hard foul?....yes and yes.

Mullens/Jamison/Hollins/Amundson

compared to

Hollins/Turiaf/Odom.. who else?

It's a better big man spread than last year, at least we've got options.

Very correct, but I think that expectation of signing a good big men died. In the absence of one good big man though, I believe it is valuable to have a lot of different situational big men. You don't look for guys that will always produce, but different guys that can produce what you need at a specific time.

Like I was saying on the general board, over the last three seasons without Thibodeau, the Celtics defense with KG off the court has been a top 7 defense. Last season was the only year where they were bad with him off the court. 11-12 they were not drastically different on defense with/without. I think that should give us hope that Doc and his staff can coach two athletic and willing big guys as well as two smart wing defenders and Paul into being a good defensive group.

We seem to have a lot of low-quality bigs that will be competing for minutes. Do you guys think that Doc will reward minutes to Hollins/Mullens/Jamison/Amundson whoever shows constant dedication on defence?

I want our bigs to follow Matt Barnes' lead and become an energetic/highly enthusiastic defensive player and worry about offense later. I would be happy to see these backup bigs split minutes and each give us 100% on defence for their little time on the court. Do you guys think we need any offensive production from our backup bigs (like Jamison) or should we be 100% defensive minded?

Yeah, like LACtdom said, that expectation died the moment we spent the MLE. I'm still hoping we can trade for Haywood mid-season but even he's not gonna have a great impact at this point either.

And it's true that Doc found ways for his team to be good defensively even with guys like Stiemsma, Big Baby, broken down O'neal, or even Krstic, Wilcox or Collins. Even when Garnett missed half the season because of the knee in 2009 they rocked a top defense with an interior rotation of Perkins, Big Baby and Mikki Moore. Even scrubs like Patrick O'Bryant and Scal were getting real minutes.

BUT, the one difference is that they already had a culture and a good system in place, and everybody was not only buying in, but had a deep understanding of what to do at every situation. We, on the other hand, come from a season of Vinny's "trap every man with a basketball" culture...

Thibodeau was able to build from what Vinny left in Chicago to an awesome defensive team, deeply I have high hopes that Doc can do the same, but I'm trying to stay moderate and not expect too much so I'm not dissapointed. But yeah, I can't wait for the god damn season to start already so we can find out lol
