If Blake continues his play as of late he'll be in MVP talks

Post#1 » by Clemenza » Fri Dec 27, 2013 5:53 pm

This guy is looking like "Rookie Season Blake" all over again- the missing guy we've been dying to see resurface again for the past three years. His haters are getting quieter and quieter with each passing game. Even Barkley couldn't say any bad sh*t about him last night. He has been a beast out there these last couple of weeks. No more spinning 20 times in the paint only to put up a weak hook- he's more sure of himself and doing more with less movements in the paint, he's rebounding, consistent with the midrange jumper, diving for loose balls again, etc.... I think our Golden Gawd is back fellas

title of thread is factually incorrect.

change the word "he'll" to "he should".
the Clippers have too many haters and naysayers for a group of writers to get behind Griffin.

as long as the Blazers keep winning and Love keeps putting up 40-40 games in losses, Griff has no shot of being looked at or considered.

just my 2 cents.
but he's been playing at an elite level as of late...and definitely deserving if he stays consistent.

best we have seen Blake play & his skills are getting better every game. I don't think Blake is MVP material just yet, but he should Win MIP easily.

I think Bledsoe is going to win Most improved player. Blake is better but the jump in production isn't as drastic.

I love how Blake is playing right now. I hope he keeps it up. I've really been wanting him to be more aggressive and he has been. He has really improved all round. (Even hitting the occasional corner 3)

I don't care if he wins MVP right now, just keep dominating like he is right now. If Blake can continue at this level and win then all of the accolades will come.
I've been an LA Clipper fan since 1998 and that will never change. I hate our new logo and jerseys!

Blake Be Beastin'

Post#7 » by Ranma » Mon Dec 30, 2013 1:39 am

Jovan Buha, ESPN Los Angeles (12/29/13)
So, over the offseason, the two discussed Griffin's new role, and Griffin came away enthralled with Rivers' trust and belief in his ability.

"That was one of the first things that I talked to Doc about when we first met in his office," Griffin said. "He said, 'I want you to face up. If you want to face up 10 times out of 10, face up 10 times out of 10. You know, why not?' It's great to have that kind of confidence from a coach that allows you to do what you feel in the moment instead of just telling you what to do."

It sounds almost impossible, but Griffin says he has learned to play faster -- he suffered through bouts of ball-stopping and indecision his first couple of seasons -- while also playing smarter.
...

The evolution of Griffin's game this season is remarkable.

He no longer hesitates to shoot when open from 15 to 18 feet, has vastly improved his free throw shooting (77 percent this month), and has fine-tuned his post game to the point where national media critics have run out of things about which to criticize him.

It feels as if the 24-year-old is finally putting together his immense potential. When asked if this was the best he has seen Griffin play in their two-plus seasons together, Paul had no choice but to agree with Griffin and Rivers.

If he keeps it up, perhaps he'll get a few votes. This team would have to truly do something amazing in the remainder of the season (with Blake being hugely responsible) to make a sizable enough impact in the voting imo.

I just want him to keep building on the foundation. He had 3 30-point games last season (30, 30 & 31). He's scored more than last year's high in 3 of his last 4 games. Calling for the ball and putting the team on his back more often in games now will only help later. In the playoffs, he and Paul need to make it their mission to put up about 55-60 combined per game. Paul has a switch that he can flip, which is something that most players do not have save a select few. Blake needs to be able to do that, but needs to know that he can do that first. He's taken a backseat the past two seasons due to having a better team and vets for teammates. He didn't get much practice to "impose his will" on a game in the last 2 years. He's learning how to elevate his game and that is vital to not only silencing some of his critics, but in the overall success of this team.

I think any team success will be placed so much on Paul that Blake has no chance.

Rookie season Blake played no defense, had no range, and played losing basketball. His motor was legendary but his impact wasn't. This is a Blake we've only seen glimpses of, the kind of game/skill that should translate into the post season... for once.

If he can develop a consistent elbow jumper then I'm fine with that. Save the MVP talk for CP3.

Mature Griffin Soars Into MVP Discussion

Jan. 10 -- Blake Griffin has made staggering improvements to his game the past four seasons -- not that anyone outside of his inner circle and the Los Angeles Clippers organization has bothered to take notice.

It's so much easier focusing on the surface with Griffin: the highlight reel dunks, the dramatics with opposing players trying to bait him into some WWE action under the basket, his vast supply of commercial work (his best stuff remains the KIA ads). Buried beneath all that, however, is the fact that Griffin has grown up and toughened up, too. He has matured and grown his game tremendously.

"That's the goal every year for me, to become a better player," Griffin told the Daily News. "Whether people agree with me or not, I feel like I have. I still have so much work to do and I have a lot of room to grow. It's not something where I want to sit back and say 'Yeah, I've made some good strides.' I just want to keep working and become better and be able to help my team more and more.

"I don't know if satisfied is the right word for me. I don't think I'll ever be satisfied with anything I've done on the court, unless you have like a perfect season. I wouldn't say satisfied, but you know, it is nice to see some hard work paying off."

Sekou Smith, NBA.com

Blake currently sits in the 8th spot on NBA.com's MVP Ladder.

Well deserved. He deserves some recognition for sure. A lot of other players who are the 2nd best player on their team like WB or Wade have been on the ladder too.

BG Stepping Up

Post#18 » by Ranma » Sat Jan 11, 2014 9:37 pm

Also, found in the L.A. Daily News article referenced in the Sekou Smith piece:

Phil Collin, Los Angeles Daily News (1/10/14)
We just might be seeing one of those breakthroughs. In the past 13 games, Griffin has averaged 25.7 points and 10.2 rebounds. That’s what he’s supposed to be doing, of course, but day-to-day watchers are seeing a lot more.

Griffin will take charges. He will bash with power forwards until he wins by submission. He has shown an uncanny ability to apply defensive help in coach Doc Rivers’ system. He’s shooting — and hitting — from the outside.

He will even play center, or recently with Paul sidelined with a shoulder injury, point forward. In the three games Paul has missed, Griffin is averaging 5.3 assists, two above his season average.
...

Griffin, one of the team captains, wasn’t going to stop at that. He knew the team needed a voice on the floor. Griffin knows he’s one of the quiet ones, but he also understood that his teammates required that continuity.

“Chris is a guy that every huddle, every dead ball, every free throw, he’s huddling guys up and speaking to us, telling us the next play whatever it is,” Griffin said. “Without him out there, we all have to step up and pitch in. “That was something I tried to do a little bit more, so guys have a kind of familiar pattern to the game and something we always do. I’m not going to replace Chris. He and I are different in terms of our leadership, but I have to tweak it a little bit.”

Elevating to Another Level

Post#19 » by Ranma » Sat Jan 11, 2014 11:13 pm

Eric Patten, Clippers.com (1/10/14)
To say Griffin has done it all for the Clippers would not be selling his level of play over the last month well enough. Griffin has been an MVP.
...

“He’s just doing everything for us, rebounding, defending,” Clippers head coach Doc Rivers said. “I’ve said it before, he’s such a good passer that people don’t know about. They get lost in his dunks and the fancy stuff. He is a great passer, not a good passer. With [Chris Paul] out we’ve really been giving him the ball and playing through him at times and it’s paying off for us.”
...

He finished with 33 points on just 15 shots, grabbed 12 rebounds, and had four assists, four steals and two blocks and did it 29 minutes. According to Basketball Reference, since 1985-86 no player has reached those statistical levels in a game in fewer than 33 minutes before him.

Baron Davis, Eric Gordan and Kaman were hurt most of Blake's rookie year so the losses did pile up. But that wasn't on Blake. I was talking about his play not wins and losses.
