Ralph and Mike take a beating on Real GM

Post#1 » by Quake Griffin » Thu Jan 16, 2014 9:04 pm

I think they're homers. Like the other team won't get a loud Bingo like the Clippers will. I also think they're very respectful of the other team and can talk the other side's players and coaches up very well.

i think Ralph is great.
and I think Mike's okay....i know some of you hate him.

thoughts?

They used to be on the lists of best commentators here. Now everyone hates them and they are the worst ever. Like TNE said, everything Clippers gets hated on here.

Mike goes into homer mode more often imo and Ralph will call him on it at times. There are still far bigger homers calling games across the league imo. It doesn't bother me too much when you consider that these broadcast teams are primarily calling games for local fans and just happen to get a national audience thanks to LP, Gametime and Coast 2 Coast.

Hard to be objective about this, but I just don't understand how anyone can say that they're "the worst" compared to other announcers out there. I remember listening to the Spurs about 3 years ago, after which I decided to never do that again.

It just seems childish to bash a veteran like Ralph due to some Bingos and OhMeOhMys, which haters always bring up, probably because they can't think of anything else negative to say. Those 30+ years covering the Clips give him the right to use whatever catchphrases he pleases and of course they're gonna be louder for us than for the other team.
As for Mike, if only he would take Ralph's advice and settle down every now and then, I think he would get a lot less hate. He actually has some useful insight to share, but his overenthusiasm can make him seem like a clown sometimes.

On a side note, I listened to the Mavs broadcast last night and those guys were all right, almost felt sorry for them at the end. :)

I think I'm the only one left who actually still really likes them. Them being homers is great in my opinion. Why would I want to watch a Clippers game when the commentators aren't really cheering for the team along with everyone else?
If the Clippers win the championship next year I'm getting banned from RealGM

Ralph is one of, if not the best in the league. Mike seems like a good guy and all but I find him to be boring and repetitive, how many times has he said "best dunk ever" "best play ever" "best shot ever" it gets to be silly at times. I miss when it was Ralph Lawler and Bill Walton.

It wasn't easy to make the ugly years entertaining, and yet they did. Go watch a Lakers broadcast now and you'll want to pull your hair out it's so boring. As a Clipper fan I'm used to everyone else hating. Even better. Makes those who "get it" stand out more to me. And those who do get it know that we're lucky to have a team like Ralph & Mike.

And as for Mike, I think he's the perfect compliment to Ralph. He knows what he's talking about, is always prepared and in a good mood, and most importantly doesn't mind being the butt of Ralph's jokes.

Wouldn't trade them for anyone.

i would never know what lakers broadcasting is like, since i never watch them purple and piss team. especially after Magic retired for the first time more than 20 years ago.

Ralph was great during the dark days, as the new fella says, and was great during some of the brighter days, like the larry brown days. Ralph and the Big Red were the best. i used to love, LOVE listening to Bill Walton's outrageous and often non-sensical comments and Ralph egging on back in the day.

If those flaker homers consider Chick Hearns to be at the level of Vin Scully(although nobody comes close to the great Vinny), Bob Uecker, and Pat Summerall, Ralph Lawler belongs in the same class. If the Clips were a better team historically, or Chick was a Clipper broadcaster and Ralph a Flaker one, them the piss and purples would foam at their mouth claiming Ralph to be the greatest ever.

Lawler deserves a statue beside Hearn outside of Staples. He is a great broadcaster. He is losing some of his cognitive skills in his old age, but I still enjoy him. Mike Smith is average. He is not as annoying as he once was in my opinion. He has more knowledge than some people give him credit for.

agree 100%. lawler "loses points" for being the clipper guy, but any other team's fans would call him the greatest of all time if they were lucky enough to have him...including the Lakers.

And as for Big Red, one of my favorite Clipper memories was going to a game in '02 when Cherokee Parks was playing and he had a good game. Good, not great...maybe 17 points and 7 rebounds or something. My buddy and I used to love Walton's superlatives so after the game we walked down and caught him before he left the sideline and I asked him what he thought of Parks' performance and he answered: "That was one of the most inspirational performances of all time."

LOL what a classic Walton moment right there.

i remember bill once saying during a clippers broadcast, "if Eric Piatkowski keeps playing at this level, he will replace Jerry West as the NBA logo"

and a all time great walton-ism, "that has to be a foul against the game of basketball!!!"

haha good times.

I think Ralph deserves to be held in the same regards as the other greats of LA. I don't know if he'll get a statue, but I sure hope that the Clippers win one before he hangs up the mic.

I will honestly probably cry when ralph retires. I cant even imagine watching a clippers game without hearing him.

Throughout all of the crappy year, he is pretty much the only reason that kept me coming back. Honestly, him and bill had some of the funnuest and most random conversations. just great.

he has so much shtick. from heeeeeeeeere come the clippers, to when he just flat out says "well i dont know what that means" and says the "dumbed" down version of the same word.

Plus, he's like the only one that still holds a mike all game... ha

i can take it or leave it on mike smith.. I would be down to replace him with Don Maclean.

Seriously. As a Clippers/Dodgers fan I've been absolutely spoiled with Ralph & Vin. It's going to be a rough transition when that ends.

I thought Lawler announced that he will retire after this season. It would really be nice to pay a tribute to him before he is too decrepit to understand it or unfortunately deceased.

Mike once referred to Ryan Hollins as the best pick and roll defender in the league

When you hear stuff like that you can't blame other fans
