DJ: 22 straight games w/ 10+ rebounds, 1+ block

Post#1 » by okpistolpete » Tue Jan 21, 2014 4:35 pm

From Elias: DeAndre Jordan has hauled in at least 10 rebounds and blocked a shot in each of his last 22 games. That's the longest streak of its kind for an NBA player in 37 years. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was the last player with a streak like that when he hauled in double-digit rebounds and blocked at least one shot in 24 consecutive games in 1976-77.

He's only had 5 games where he didn't get a double double too. Beast

Did a little digging...

Dwight Howard's career long streak of games with at least 10 rebounds and 1 block is 20 games. DJ can pass that tomorrow at Charlotte.

More digging...

Dikembe Mutombo's longest such streak was 10 games.
Shaquille O'Neal's longest such streak was 13 games.

you never know what beating this kid over and over and over in the media will do to him.

I'm sure he's heard all of the criticism from the media.
I'm sure idiot Laker fans shout stuff at him while he's in public.

i love this kid and his work ethic.

more accurately, i think it should be: "you never know what having a good coach who believes in him will do."

he barely played any basketball in high school, played one year at texas a&m, and then had dunleavy and del negro. he's never had someone like doc who knew how to coach him and who instilled any kind of confidence in him.

I honestly believe the biggest difference between DJ last year to DJ this year, is simply the playing time he is given. his last season's per 36 numbers are almost identical to his per 36 numbers this year.

DJ's TS last year .606 this year .598
DJ's RB/36 and Points/36 last year 10.6 and 13.0 this year, 13.9 and 9.8
DJ's PER last year, 17.2 this year, 17.2

only measurable difference here is that he would have scored 3.2 more points per game last year but he has more than made up for it with 3.3 more rebounds per game per 36 this year. his PER for both years are identical. no difference what so ever there.

he is the same player, just given more minutes, that is all.
ehhhhh f it.

would be a nice confidence boost for him. I'm loving the scoring he is putting up.

Streaks can be accessed on Basketball-Reference. The only problem is that it's done in 5 year blocks and you may have to adjust the range if a streak occurred over the course of multiple seasons.

Olajuwon had 21 straight games in 1991.

That's awesome! THANK YOU. I've been looking for a tool like this.

So unfortunately they only have this data available starting with the 1985-86 season, and like you said Olajuwon's streak of 21 is the longest since then. For all we all know it's an NBA record. And tonight DJ gets a shot to tie that mark. I wonder if anyone within the organization is aware?

Well, despite the loss DJ did do it again. That means he's tied Hakeem Olajuwon for the most consecutive games with at least 10 boards and a block since 1985...and perhaps ever.

Goes for #22 Friday, possibly setting an NBA record...and at the very least having the longest such streak in the past 30 years.

Here's an interesting ClipperBlog article by Andrew Han on DJ's defense.

Sometimes Elias Sports Bureau or ESPN Stats & Info tweet unique stats/feats. Maybe they'll say something about it. Like you said, even if is just around 30 seasons, it's still impressive that he'll possibly pass a mark that noone else has been able to during that time.

I actually reached out to Mike Smith and gave him the heads up, which he did acknowledge, so I think he'll mention it tonight.

DJ needs to get more points in these games we are lacking in scoring in the worse way.

Seeing that blocked shots weren't recorded before '73, I imagine 24 is the NBA record!
