The Available Players Thread

(Changed the title to reflect the other types of available players as well. Mods - feel free to make any changes to player statuses.)

With the new CBA, I don't think many of us expected so many quality players to be bought out, but now it looks like we're going to be able make a few nice additions to the team without losing any assets. I decided to consolidate a list of all the available players who have either been bought out or waived.

SIGNED
Caron Butler (SF) - Thunder
Danny Granger (SF) - Clippers
Glen Davis (PG) - Clippers
Earl Clark (PF) - Knicks (10-day)
Shannon Brown (SG) - Knicks (10-day)
Beno Udrih (PG) - Grizzlies (claimed off waivers)
Jason Collins (C) - Nets (being signed for remainder of season)

AVAILABLE
Antawn Jamison (PF) - Waived by the Hawks. Bulls & Spurs interested.
Ronnie Brewer (SF) - Waived by the Rockets.
Roger Mason Jr. (SG) - Waived by Kings.
Ron Artest (SF) - Bought out by Knicks.
Bobby Brown (PG)- Season in China ends in 2 weeks.
Lester Hudson (SG) - Season in China ends in 2 weeks. Grizzlies, Knicks, Clippers have reached out.
Jimmer Fredette (SG) - Bought out by Kings. Appears close to signing with Bulls.

POTENTIALLY AVAILABLE
Ben Gordon (SG) - Reported interest from Clippers, Bulls, and Rockets if bought out.
Charlie Villanueva (PF) - If bought out, he reportedly wants to sign with the Rockets.
Chris Kaman (C)
Emeka Okafor (C)

Apparently more are on the way too...

let me be honest here.

I always thought nothnx on Big Baby because i thought he was 6'6" but survived cuz he's fat bodied.
I didn't know he was 6'9"

SIGN IMMEDIATELY PLEASE.

If Granger is making his intentions known to sign with Miami or SAS....it tells me he thinks those are the places he can steal a ring and that he doesnt think much else of other destinations.

I'm good with Big Baby and Earl Clark and just putting Dudley in the doldrums.

Plenty of Space for Granger Room

Marc Stein, ESPN (2/21/14)
The Clippers, meanwhile, would naturally be at the top of Granger's own list, since he's an L.A. resident, but there's a sense out there that Doc Rivers and Big Baby Davis essentially already have an understanding that will bring Davis to Clipperland as soon as he clears waivers next week.

Will Sixers let Danny Granger go?

Perhaps the Clips should take a stab at Ben Gordon. I know he has been terrible in recent years, but maybe he would get revived on a possible playoff team- with Redick out, he could provide some firepower at the 2 guard.

Baby Davis for sure,

Granger or Ben Gordon

and Kaman. but if Kaman is still butt hurt and won't come, then Earl Clark or Jason Collins.

Getting Priorities in Order

I don't want to take things for granted, but it looks like we have the advantage in getting Glen Davis since money will not be an issue with the Magic apparently paying the difference of his new and old contracts in their buyout agreement. There's also a sense that Jason Collins will sign with the Nets if they lose out on Davis, so it is unlikely that both will find their way onto the Clippers' roster this season.

Davis is obviously the top priority since he fills the biggest need among the available options out there: a skilled big-man with size albeit in girth if not height. He'll give both Griffin & Jordan much needed rest as a regular rotation post player and, while Doc prefers to play small ball, having all three on the court at the same time might be an option to consider, especially if our lack of production from the 3 spot continues. Big Baby and/or Jordan could occupy and jam the opposition's post players in the paint allowing room for Griffin to operate around the mid-range whether it would be against a defending PF or SF. The fact that he relatively hits his free throws also provides a nice option whenever the hack-a-DJ strategy proves troublesome.

Danny Granger has sex appeal as a name to fill in as our starting small forward both for his career exploits and our struggles at the position this season. However, he hasn't been the same player at the height of his game for quite a while and it's quite probable that he'll never get there. Still, given the fairly minimal salary required to sign him, he represents an appealing option with little risk involved.

Widely considered a good teammate, Granger is looking to prove himself and recover a lot of his market value. If he doesn't get carried away with those personal priorities, he could be a good addition to the team even at a diminished capacity since both Dudley and Barnes haven't nearly met their respective expectations. Not to mention the guy is a gamer. Remember the bloody-sock effort he had with the Clippers' predraft workout back in the day?

I'd love to add both Davis and Granger to the roster, but Danny G looks less like a sure thing even with local ties given that Miami and San Antonio are reportedly among his suitors.

Emeka Okafor doesn't look like he'll play at all this season or postseason. Names like Earl Clark and Ben Gordon are intriguing but I want Doc to really do his research before locking into firm commitments for the playoff roster...at least more so than he did with Mullens and Jamison, which were both questionable signings even from the beginning.

If Doc would start Reggie or put Dudley back in as starter as a place holder,we should go with Ronnie Brewer on a 10 day. Brewer would give us a big defender at SG and allow Crawford and Barnes to boost bench points. Then Granger and Davis.

I wouldn't be surprised to hear Rivers considering Bobby Brown in two weeks for possibly (and hopefully after the signings of Davis & Granger) the final open roster spot. Remember, he mentioned looking into getting players out of their commitments with the Chinese Basketball Association when Paul was out with the shoulder injury.

It's not a coincidence that Ramona Shelburne, who covers the Clippers and Lakers, is tweeting about interest in Brown. She's still following Antawn Jamison's possible landing spots.

The Brooklyn Nets are expected to sign Jason Collins to a 10-day contract later today, according to a report from ESPN.com, which would make him the first openly gay athlete in NBA history.
...

The Nets had been mulling the decision of whether to sign Collins for days, but were waiting to see whether Glen Davis, who was recently bought out by the Magic, would potentially sign with them after clearing wwaivers. But according to Shelburne, Davis has given the Los Angeles Clippers “a sense that he’s decided to join them.”

Whats the deal with Ben Gordon this season? Just not getting playing time or just playing poorly? Injured?

I kinda want Earl Clark more than Danny Granger now.

for some reason Im scared Granger's knee will explode or stop working.
he'll do the job Dudley cannot and is long enough to annoy some of the SFs we can't guard right now.

i have to admit, i was remembering the Danny Granger of yesteryears, not the Danny Granger who's trueshooting% is at 49. i had no idea how low he has sunk. looking at his numbers, I'm not sure if he will be an upgrade at SF from what we've got already.

Rob Mahoney, Sports Illustrated (2/22/14)

We have some reported movement on this front via Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports, and it’s a divorce that’s been long in the making. Gordon really hasn’t been more than a blip on the Bobcats’ season; he’s logged just 259 minutes to date, never as a regular member of Steve Clifford’s rotation. Were his $13.2 million salary less egregious, he might well have been dealt. Trust that Charlotte tried.

Instead the Bobcats will at least pursue the possibility of working out some kind of discounted buyout, which would allow Gordon to chase opportunity elsewhere while removing the shadow created by that dark cloud of a contract. Gordon can still play a bit when he cares to, a distinction the Bobcats know all too well. If given incentive to focus and put in effort, he’s a useful volume scorer who needn’t hijack the offense to be effective. When he can’t be troubled to commit, though, Gordon looks to get his offensively while unplugging completely on defense. Most of the teams who will consider Gordon on the rebound should be competitive enough to hold his attention, but who’s to say when we haven’t seen him play competent basketball in more than two years?

Shams Charania, RealGM (2/24/14)
As an MVP-caliber season nears an end with Xinjiang in China, Lester Hudson has received inquiries from the Memphis Grizzlies, New York Knicks and Los Angeles Clippers, looking into the guard’s availability, league sources told RealGM.

In helping take Xinjiang to the Chinese Basketball Association playoffs and leading the club to the second-best record in the league, Hudson is averaging 26 points, 7.6 rebounds and five assists...

Hudson, a crafty 6-foot-3 guard, played for the Utah Jazz in training camp this season and averaged nearly five points on 45.5 percent three-point shooting over five preseason games.

You know, there's something to that. Maybe we just have to accept the limits of our bench and instead just say that when our starters are resting, we'll just body the hell out of opponents and soften them up. Even if they get outscored, they'll at least make it easier for our starters down the stretch.
