Wow. I figured we let Gentry walk because we had Lue in our pocket. Shame they let him slip away.

Goddamn it this offseason has been pretty piss poor so far. I'm not liking most of the FO changes and losing assistant after assistant isn't making me feel any better.

Mobley can easily replace him.

Something smells fishy. Our assistants aren't leaving for head coaching gigs elsewhere. They're just changing teams to do the same job as they did here. WTF is going on?
Anyway, let's bring back Sam Cassell.

Maybe these guys are concerned that even if Doc is authorized by the NBA to make decisions on behalf of the team that Sterling may end up nullifying his moves if he wins a lawsuit? Or maybe Doc is just hesitant to make decisions without the ownership issue settled?

I'm scared that it is because of Sterling, but still believe he will be gone. It's hard because we don't really know the impact our assistant coaches had. Billups is on the radar too

Cassell and Billups. we lost a bunch of coaches this off season, we will need more than just 1 assistant coach added to our staff.

I hope these decisions were made from a money standpoint and not because we have/had a racist owner. I will relax a little bit once we actually make a decent signing/decision.

I wasn't expecting both Lue and Gentry to leave. I should have known since I kept seeing their names for coaching vacancies. I guess we'll just have to find some new assistants, Lawrence Frank would be a good start.

It's ok, this is a usual thing with Doc's assistants. They left cause they got their salaries doubled and they will have more work there than we can give them here. When Thibs left Doc, everyone thought that the Celtics defense would fall apart, and instead it kept being the best or 2nd best in the league for years. Both Frank and Woodson would be great additions and would help a lot with our defense, while our offense will be just fine continuing to build from last year. Even if we don't have an offensive guru like Gentry.
Swap of Gentry for Scalabrine?

Jesus, that's A LOT of money for a relatively unproven assistant... and it's not like Lue was a prodigy or anything, he mostly coordinated our defense and we weren't exactly elite there. Good luck to him, I'll still remember him as the dude that helped negate a championship to Iverson

I fear a little bit that Doc is going to go with retread coaches instead of risking a little bit on more competent but lesser known names. I'm ok with Frank or Woodson taking Gentry's place, but I'd love it if we had gone after a guy like Ron Adams (Thibs defensive coach until he had a fallout with the Bulls FO) before the Warriors snatched him and Gentry. Maybe that Griffin guy from Chicago everyone talks about. But please no Mo Cheeks, Sam Mitchell, and the likes.

yeah you bring up some really good points.
doc has an uncanny skill for absorbing the strategies his assistants develop and trucking on after they part ways.
afterwards he tends to attract some really good assistants so i don't think there is much to worry about here.

Yeah, I think some of it is that, and some of it is just underrating of Doc. My thinking is he doesn't just absorb his assistants' strategy, but he is there to help create it, so he can easily keep executing it when they're gone.
People are quick to jump into the narrative that Thibbodeau created the strong side defense out of thin air and he's the genius that everyone copied, but I don't think it was that much of a one-man-hero-idea. Doc and the rest of the staff were right there in every coaching session, giving input and instructing the players as much as Thibs was. That's why when he left and Frank took his place, the Celtics still had the 2nd best defense in the league. Then Frank also left and the Celtics were back to being the best defense in the league. Now Doc's here and he doesn't have the personnel, but he's still executing it and still improved our defense dramatically.
I don't really get why everyone loves to crown Carlisle, Pop and Thibs for being geniuses and they barely talk about their assistants until some team is snatching them, but with Doc everyone is quick to credit the assistants and dismiss his knowledge. Oh well, silly media narratives...

I didn't think Lue was any good, he was in charge of Defense and sometimes we weren't very good at it. I also think he looked lost on the bench and seemed to be more of the "Head Water Guy," not a coach.
Glad he is gone, I am also one who isn't keen on ex-lakers w/ no Clipper ties on our staff unless they are talented which Lue isn't.
