CP3 and JJ snubbed from the Top 10 Backcourts in the NBA

Let me start off by clarifying how I chose the criteria for this list. To me, a team’s NBA backcourt is defined as the starting point guard and shooting guard of that team. Some people believe it is the two guards who play the most minutes, but I went with the two starting guards (Sorry, Tony and Manu). Also, I went with the best duo’s which is why some of the best guards in the league are not on this list (Thanks, J.J Redick). Lastly, I did not just go with last year’s performance to determine the order, however I did put last season’s stats in parenthesis next to each player’s name for a friendly reminder. I looked at things such as team chemistry and potential production. So without further ado, here is the Top 10 Starting Backcourts in the NBA for the 2014-15 season.

10. Jrue Holiday (14.3 PPG, 7.9 APG, 4.2 RPG) and Eric Gordon (15.4 PPG, 3.3 APG, 2.6 RPG)

After a 2013 riddled with injuries for the Pelicans, we were still able to catch glimpses of the bright future of their starting five. We have seen Gordon prove to be a top scorer in the league when healthy, and Jrue Holiday looked ready to come lead the Pelicans after his breakout season in 2012-13 in Philly. These two guards have the potential to be deadly together. No doubt it helps when you have a budding star in Anthony Davis to relieve some of the pressure off of you. It will be exciting to see how New Orleans will mesh in hopefully their first season of injury free basketball.

There the intro and #1o spot. See the rest of the article here:

Thoughts on the rankings?

The guy who wrote the article made a thread about it on the PC board too. I'll basically say what I said on there. Without even getting into the stats as justification, a basic qualifier for the ranking should be whether or not you would want a given backcourt on your team/to build around. In reality I don't think a single person would take all 10 of those over Paul and Redick, so the rankings are kind of ridiculous.

To that point I think Redick is a seriously underrated player, who if you don't see him play significantly you wouldn't realize the quality of player he is. I myself didn't really consider him a legit starter on a contender type team before we got him, and he ended up being the biggest pleasant surprise for me last season. His ball handling as it translates into making the right passes/plays and team/off ball defense are really underrated. He's not elite in either regard, but he operates really well within the flow of the offense and basically provides what you want at the 2 in the current NBA.

Who would actually take Walker/Stephenson, Kyrie/Waiters. Wall/Beal, Lillard/Matthews, Holiday/Gordon, etc over Paul and Redick if given the opportunity... essentially no one.

How can the best PG in the world not get even an honorable mention?

Rizzo explains why Chris Paul and J.J. Redick were off the table:

Michael Rizzo wrote:As I looked at the duo list I had and compared tandems to each other, obviously Chris Paul had an advantage over most players, but JJ really did not beat anyone. As a duo, they are not better than any of the top 10. JJ has not proven himself as a quality starting two guard in this league. I felt like he never really produced in Orlando (I know he did not get the minutes), and the same thing happened in Milwaukee. When he got the chance to start in LA, he couldn’t stay healthy. Maybe this year he’ll prove me wrong and earn him and CP3 a spot on the list, but for now, they are off.

In other words, having Chris Paul on your team counts as an automatic disqualification on his list unless CP3's partner is another superstar.

I think it's funny that he comments on JJ not being able to stay healthy, but puts Jrue and EG on his list, oh and Drose....

Yeah that list is BS I'd probably put them 3 or 4 on that list, i would also put Golden State number 1.

Agreed, as of right now though I'd take curry over wall and for me Klay's defense puts him slightly above Beal.
