Should be a big step up from Hollins, udoh can protect the rim a bit.

Most definitely an upgrade over Hollins. Solid signing.

Good defender, good at boxing out, some of the worst hands in the entire NBA.

1) Don't talk about Hollins like that
2) You are correct

For a third big on the depth chart at either big man position, maybe 4th after Hedo, nothing to complain about here. He'll take Hollins role and he might not hack people as much.

don't get me wrong, I am very happy for this signing as he is a great compliment for everything Spener Hawes is not.

but to say he is so much better than Ryan Hollins, i beg your pardon.

both share a career PER of 10.8.

Ryan is -2 in terms of Offensive rating minus defensive rating career wise. Udoh is -19.

Udoh fits us better now that we have Hawes, Udoh is a full block shot ahead per 36 above Ryan, but Ryan is the better overall player, and both end up being a wash in whole. to say Udoh is an NBA player and Ryan is not, is just not true.

Trisity Miller, FullyClips.com (9/4/14)
Whichever method works best for you (eye, base statistics, advanced statistics), they all speak highly on Udoh’s defense.

Via ESPN’s Defensive Real Plus-Minus statistics, Udoh ranked 10th amongst power forwards in the league at 2.83, behind the likes of Tim Duncan (1), Taj Gibson (6), and Serge Ibaka (7).

Via SportsVU, Udoh forced opponents to shoot 47.6% at the rim, 13th in the league amongst players who played in 40+ games and allowed 5.0 attempts at the rim per game, behind the likes of Roy Hibbert (1), Tiago Splitter (3), and Joakim Noah (10).

And for the bunch that isn’t keen on advanced statistics telling ones story, Udoh’s ability to defend is readily apparent once you cut on the film.

I think if you polled fans and GM's alike on who'd they choose between Udoh or Hollins, it would be unanimous for the former. Hollins hasn't received an ounce of interest from any team on the market. Udoh has been courted by at least the Clippers and Bulls, two of the league's elite.

The thing about Hollins is that he starts fouling as soon as he steps onto the court

Hollins has better hands, so he's going to finish better on offense, but Udoh is a much better defensive player. He's smarter, he doesn't just hack to death.

Hollins for his career averages 6.3 fouls/36 minutes, he averaged 6.5 fouls/36 last season, it is just too much. He is active though, and he tries, but too many mistakes can end up overshadowing any good your energy would have done.

Udoh will actually be the teams smartest and most consistent defender, but he's just not going to rebound or do much on offense well enough for him to be a player that you leave on the court for long periods of time. Udoh can shoot FT's though, so if the team wants defense and rim protection at the end of a game, Udoh can be put in for DJ.

Ekpe Udoh is 15-17 in made free throws with less than 3 minutes to go in the 4th quarter. As far as sudden death baskets go (down 1 or 2 points, less than 3 seconds remaining in the 4th quarter, last basket ended the game or extending to overtime), he doesn't have that.

He did have one clutch moment, according to Basketball-Reference:

As Warrior, vs. Grizzlies, lockout season. 28.1 mark, score 101-102, Udoh makes two free throws, one to tie, one to lead. Dubs lost on a Tony Allen offensive rebound put back 103-104.

Hollins had a couple of really good games maybe two years ago. He seemed to have the athletic ability to be a backup center but I think he lacks the basketball IQ. Udoh is a really nice addition to our bigs rotation.
