Is the hate getting annoying or....??

are you still at the point in your Clipper fandom where you're happy to be hated on because we never used to be thought of?
The thread in the General Discussion about our team being overrated.
Going into my 4th season in the CP-BG era, I am absolutely tired of EVERYBODY telling me that my team cannot beat OKC or SAS and then calling us overrated in the same breath.
on a smaller note:
im tired of met friends IRL calling Chris Paul a choke for Game 5 and then telling me we had no shot at beating OKC last year. which one is it?
I have no idea where I fit on this spectrum. On one hand, I'm glad to not be irrelevant anymore. On the other, this team has never won a championship or even made a CF. Why the hell are we hated? Why the hell are we the team that people love to point to as overrated?
The Spurs flop.
The Heat flop(ped).
foh.

Idc what people think. Don't care if you hate the clips, love them, think all clips fans are bandwagon fans, etc. I know I've been a fan since the early 2000s w dmiles Q and Odom part 1 and that's all that matters.

it becomes a little annoying if you follow the NBA (and post on this forum or others) and as a part of getting your daily news/ prospectives on whats happening in the NBA, you always have to read about your team being overrated, being flop artists etc. etc....especially from people don't watch your team.

Why do people call us bandwagoners when we haven't even reached the Finals yet let alone won it?
Also, when Laker fans say there is no rivalry between LAL and LAC, that's when you know they feel there is a rivalry.

my favorite.
I tell them. "I agree. So stop acting like it."
usually gets under their skin...but at that point theyre usually trying to antagonize you by saying it isn't a rivalry anyway. So eff em.

People are weird and perception generally tends to rule over reality.

I've found that there's two categories of teams that end up being loved by casual fans:
1. Historical big bandwagon teams - i.e. Celtics, Lakers, Bulls
2. Small market teams - i.e. Pacers, Grizzlies, Spurs, OKC
The teams that don't fit into either category (i.e. us, the Heat, the Knicks, the Nets, etc.) get bashed all the time no matter what we do. When we suck, we're a laughingstock for "doing less with more" in terms of being uncompetitive with big-market resources. When we win, small-market fans and big-bandwagon fans alike feel threatened and start to grasp for excuses. It's annoying, but that's the dynamic.
The media plays into it, too. They spent years drilling it into people's heads that all Blake can do is dunk and flop, so now low-information casual fans believe it. The media has now started predicting 60+ wins and the first seed for this team, which most likely won't happen, so that they can spend all year bashing us as "overrated" (even though the media themselves was doing the overrating) and encouraging more hate, which leads to more pageviews for them.

Just to start off great post Martin, I agree with everything you said. When our team was no good no one cared about the Clippers at all. Now all they see and know about the Clippers are from the media.
Personally I don't care if we get hated or not. Like I said before and I'll say it again, when we were bad no one cared about the Clippers except for us die hard Clipper fans. So if we are hated by people so be it, who cares, I don't. What I care about is that we have a great new owner that wants to do whatever it takes to win a championship. I care that we have a great coach that has won a championship and is trying to lead us there. I care that we have two great players in Blake Griffin and Chris Paul. (That's something that I had been dreaming for us to have for years)
So what matters to me is that we play well and we win. With all the years of losing the general NBA fans hate is the least of my worries.

I know I'm not supposed to because you guys are a rival and all but I don't hate you. Good luck this year guys I'd rather you over any other Western team. Well except OKC of course.

It hurts less when you realize they're right....
Our team is over-exposed in the media and no one on this team has earned that exposure -- that's why we get the hate that we get. Based on our accomplishments, we're akin to the Atlanta Hawks (and nobody talks about the Atlanta Hawks), yet we get covered in the media as if we've been in or won a few championships.
The media says we have the best PG in the league and the best PF in the league -- a combo that should be Finals-bound (i.e. Stockton/Malone, GP/Kemp)-- yet we barely escaped the 1ST round and collapsed in the 2ND. We may have the best PG & PF on paper, but they're not passing the eye-ball test; so people begin to look elsewhere and scoff when the Clippers are mentioned.
Every season that passes without a WCF appearance the hate will intensify. With the west being wide-open this year (Durant injury/Spurs fatigue), the Clippers would be wise to take this opportunity to get that monkey off of their backs.

As stacked as the West is, the only two teams better than us are OKC and SAS who, for reasons everyone mentions, are leaving the door wide open for us to take the no.1 seed. This means that we only have to play the
(possibly energy-drained) winner of SAS v OKC. So yes, if we don't make the WCF we either deserve the hate or people should realise we are not that good.

right about?
For the most part, all the pundits have the Spurs winning the west again. Nobody has us better than them or the Thunder. Yet, all i hear about is how overrated we are.
The Vegas odds have the Spurs as the favorite to win the West....yet, someone is still gonna tell me that we're overrated.
if you don't like that Blake and CP have commercials, that's ONE thing. However, we're human beings. We're not smart enough to compartmentalize? A commercial =/= the world thinks ur the best basketball team (thus overrating you).
btw, the Hawks haven't had a 50 win season in about 5 years....in the east. No. We're not champions. But we aren't the Hawks.

At the beginning of this team's improvement, I was a little more interested in what others thought. It could be fans of other teams or the national media. If we had a nationally televised game on ESPN, I'd record that and watch it after watching the local telecast or I'd watch one of the replays. I just wanted to get a vibe of what people thought about the team. Now, I don't really care what they have to say regardless of if it's positive or negative.
An unbiased assessment is one thing, but how often are you getting that? It's a lot of snark, some misinformation and of course there's the hypocrisy. In real life, I'd suggest just knowing your audience. If they're more dialed in to what's going on, then approach them that way. If they're the types to just spout stuff with little proof, then keep it casual. I very seldom talk about my team with other people if they're not fans. If it comes up, then I'll participate. I'm not going to get upset if someone doesn't understand the salary cap, but I'll know to keep the convo light.
A lot of people on RealGM seem to be very angry people and then some are just knuckleheads. I'd suggest not engaging with those types. They're easy to identify and many of them post on the general board.

If you say that nobody has us as favourites or top 3 then you are living under a rock, simply go to our team predictions forum and see what us clipper fans have said about our predictions. Based on last year's franchise-record season where we were only 3 games better than Portland and Houston and our previous playoff exits, I can see why people call us overrated. If you say we will nab the 3rd seed and exit in the second round then that's fine but for the people who say more, don't cry about any hate you get because they're right - we haven't done anything yet.

......???
1) We won the 3rd seed last year. That's where we should be rated.
2) LOL at using the team's fan base and their hopes and expectations as a gage for if a team is overrated. Fans aren't objective. If that's the case, from this board alone, the Toronto Raptors are the most overrated team in basketball. Wanna take a trip to the Warriors forum and peep their fans saying they can win the west? They've never won anything.
This is sports. The start of every season for a fan sounds like four words:
THIS
IS
THE
YEAR
obviously in some capacity. If you're a contender, a chip. If you suck, some promise.
Main point:
being overrated is CLEARLY something that comes from "OBJECTIVE" pundits and media publications. Not a team's fans. what the hell man.

I couldn't care less what your average Joe and his malleable opinion think about us. They'll all love us when the narrative switches.
But I'm kind of bothered that a lot of the mainstream press the Clippers get is from reporters who used to cover the Lakers, but since they're not relevant now, they just flipped sides. Think Ramona, Arash and them at ESPN, while guys like Arnovitz, who could give an informed opinion as a long time follower of the franchise, stopped covering the Clippers. I think, in the way they narrate things, it kind of leaves the impression on some people that the Clippers are just the new Lakers, culture wise. Like it's the shallow team in LA that celebrities and bandwagoners follow. It bothers me cause one of the things that attracted me to the Clippers when I was a kid was most of the fanbase had a completely different type of personality to that.
I think that affects players too, it's common to hear people say, I like Blake's personality on commercials and interviews, but in the court he's a flopper/whiner or whatever. And I think that also comes from the way he's been portrayed in the media, supported by group think on the internet, which makes casual fans completely misunderstand his personality. Like the way Wade's personality had always been portrayed as a humble hard working guy, but when the big three got there he started to get depicted as this self-centered prick (which probably was closer to the truth from the beginning). Or the way Dirk went from unanimous soft euro choker to all around gangsta after he won the chip. Or how they made Jordan go from selfish stat padder to the ultimate winner. Eventually the narrative will switch for us too, and it'll be equally corny.
