CP3's conditioning?

Chris Paul is a 7-time All-Star for a reason.

Watching Paul, though, I've wondered if he's actually in tip-top shape by professional basketball standards.

He's averaged only 34 minutes per game over the last three seasons — not a big number for an elite NBA player who won't turn 30 until May. Maybe this is simply a result of his knee issues?

When I watch CP3 I wonder if he'd be even better, if, say, he dropped 10-15 pounds, worked on flexibility and added some lean muscle mass. Does Paul put in the conditioning work during the off-season or is there a touch of B-Diddy in his approach?

I post because I'm sure Clippers diehards would know better than me. If I'm way off base, I got no problem being told so.

Just like to see players — especially great ones — max out their abilities.

He's played 34 minutes because the last couple years we've had a good backup PG. So he doesn't need to play as much. Its not conditioning. It's called having a bench.

^not this year tho. we are showcasing Jamal for a trade and that eats into CP's playing time but yeah, having Bledsoe then Collison last year did give us a good deal of relief at point off the bench.

CP3's Minutes and Assists

Another thing to consider is that Paul and Griffin have not played in 4th quarters during blowouts, which lowers their minutes-per-game averages. CP3 still doing work given his rise among the all-time assists leaders.

Your observations are correct -- we have a fat point-guard.

But he needs to be fat because he's already short -- and in this league you can't be short and skinny.

CP3 uses his fat-body to create separation on shot attempts and to open-up passing windows, so as far as I'm concerned, he can keep every pound.

I think this started when he came into the 2011-2012 season out of shape because of the lockout.
he was chubby and bro science says the hammy injury that he got early occurred because of it.

I honestly don't think it's been a problem since.

I don't think Doc is "showcasing" Crawford. After 14 years in the NBA, everybody knows Crawford's skillset. There are no secrets about him.

I agree that CP3 should be in better shape- maybe 5-10 pounds lighter- but that's not happening in the middle of the season.

Farmar's Failings Thus Far

I was going to own up a little to my bias against Farmar in wanting Austin Rivers over him, but I just came across a decent article that cited some stats of note. Before I reference it, I want to clarify that I think Farmar should be the better option with regards to our postseason hopes, but for whatever reason, he has been a disappointment. It's debatable whether the better option is to stick with him or hope to go with the un-developed young Rivers, who has notable question marks of his own. However, the point could be moot as we may not have to decide on one over the other, so I'll leave that for possibly another discussion for another time.

Anyhow, here is an excerpt from the aforementioned piece:

Jesse Blancarte, BasketballInsiders.com (1/3/15)
This season, Farmar has a real plus-minus rating of -2.70 and a PER rating of 9.13 (well below league average). When Chris Paul is off the court, the Clippers are being outscored by 7.1 points and when Farmar is on the court, the Clippers are being outscored by 5.8 points. Compare this to last season where the Clippers were outscoring opponents by 5.7 points with backup point guard Darren Collison on the floor and still outscoring opponents by two points without Paul on the court. This is especially painful for the Clippers as Collison is thriving with the Sacramento Kings with a 2.97 real plus-minus rating (30th-best in the league) and an 18.48 PER rating.*

Farmar isn’t the only concern. Reserve players Glen Davis, Spencer Hawes, Chris Douglas-Roberts, Reggie Bullock and Hedo Turkoglu all have negative net ratings when they are on the court (a stark contrast from last season when many of the key reserves had net positive ratings). The only key reserve with a positive net rating while on the court this season is Jamal Crawford at 2.7. Rivers has tried to address this in recent games by leaving at least one (but usually two) starters in the game to mix with the backups. This has worked decently, but there is no alternative to playing Farmar at point guard (Jared Cunningham is not a viable alternative) and unless Farmar finds his groove with the Clippers soon, this could be an Achilles heel for Los Angeles come playoff time.

*To be fair to the Clippers, Collison was given a contract by the Kings that the Clippers could not compete with, so it is hard to hold them accountable for losing him last offseason.

Maybe he's gone on the "Raymond Felton" diet.

but I think he's been CP has been fine outside of the lockout year in which a lot of players came back heavier….so, don't worry about me.

Yeah CP is fine. He's really strong quick and fast. He gets gassed sometimes but everyone does.
