also really still hope we can sign arthur even if we're getting crowded at SF/PF. i'd take my chances at letting smith play backup small ball C all day if it meant we could still add arthur.

??? Stunned is the word. Athletically I can see the reason, but how will things workout with minutes distribution between Griffin and Smith?

I think the Clippers did a great job of reloading this offseason- Pierce, Stephenson, Aldrich, and now Smith.

There is an element of 'quantity' over 'quality' here. But when you're already up against the cap, you're not going to have a lot of 'quality' options available. We have a couple of reclamation type projects, but those are the ones that can provide value for what the Clippers are able to spend.

By signing them, I think they are going out and trying to take the chance/shot at really putting our team over the top.

if he's locked in on the defensive end, combined with his passing makes him a great addition

J-Smoove Moves to Lob City

Post#7 » by Ranma » Thu Jul 16, 2015 9:23 pm

I've been against Smith the player during his Atlanta and Detroit days, but he played a little bit better in Houston and still offers upside. I'm probably seduced by what he could offer over what he'll likely do for us, but I for one, am actually glad that he joined our team. I understand--and even share in--nickhx2's concerns given that Doc didn't rein in Crawful so what's to say he will with Smith?

Still, having him off the bench as our primary backup PF to Griffin and possible 6th man who can also play C or SF in small-ball or other lineup variations is a tantalizing prospect even if it is also dangerous. Still holding out hope to package Crawford and Hamilton in a trade as well as Emeka Okafor becoming available eventually.

1st Unit
  • B. Griffin
  • P. Pierce
  • D. Jordan
  • J. Redick
  • C. Paul
2nd Unit
  • A. Rivers
  • L. Stephenson
  • C. Aldrich
  • W. Johnson
  • J. Smith
Reserves/Assets
  • C. Wilcox
  • B. Dawson
  • J.Crawford
  • J. Hamilton
  • TBD

Austin/Jamal/Lance/Smith

Doc is just filling the bench with knuckleheads so Paul doesn't focus all his anger on DJ like they promised

Now go trade Jamal for a SF, any SF, I don't care how bad he is

I think the big distinction here is what you're paying him, and the role he has on the team. If you're paying him big bucks to be one of 'your guys', no way. But as a budget signing to bring off your bench and add depth, he is a great addition.

If you pay him too much and expect him to lead, you will be frustrated at his inconsistency and flakiness. But at the lower pay scale and supporting role, you're happy when he gives your team a spark and can fill some minutes over the course of a game.

It has to be for the minimum, we can't offer him anything else.

In all seriousness though, he's great value at that price. Specially on a team already filled with ball handlers and shot creators where he's not gonna have as much a chance to f*ck up as he would somewhere else. He can even fit in some line ups with Blake and Pierce in the frontcourt that could be pretty good on both ends.

eh, josh smith is pretty overrated as a defender. i don't think any of us should be counting on him to be doing shutdown things off the bench.

he also takes horrible shots. the only good part about this is he's still got great athleticism and he's a very good passer which adds to the team's already lethal interior attack. the hope we should all have, imo, is that being our top bench guy (or is that lance now?) means he'll be reined in some, as he's much better being a support player rather than a starring one.

i still think we need to add darrell arthur.

also one other thing: this team is going to take a ton of time to gel together. we now have a circus of personalities in the locker room with the additions of pierce/lance and now smith. the bench has been completely revamped and even if davis comes back the bench will have 3 new guys, all of whom are supposed to play key roles. i think we have the tools to go very far and maybe win it all but we need to have tempered expectations out of the gate.

espn says it's a S/T to us. what? how can we take on S/T if we're in tax?

also i would have a laugh if the first things that came out of josh smith's mouth at a press conference were "uh, sorry about last year, clips fans." make it happen!

From a talent perspective, it's a great addition. The Clippers finally have some solid depth, although PG is a little shaky atm.

We have the opportunity to put out some versatile line-ups and I'm really looking forward to that. There's some questionable personalities and that's the biggest question mark right now. If the players can be on the same page and willing to sacrifice self for team, then it could work out wonderfully. If they don't buy in, then it can be a very volatile season and I'm sure that there are many that are hoping for that.

The Rockets offered Josh Smith the non-bird exception of roughly $2.5 million for the 2015-16 season.

If we're in tax, it's actually the only way of acquiring someone besides one of the allotted slots.

We trade for Josh Smith and his new salary, by trading away equal salary to the Rockets. Crawford?

EDIT- I guess not- I didn't see anywhere at ESPN that reported S&T, maybe they corrected it.

can't believe i'm buying into this but i guess i don't have much choice. even if have some misgivings, i can't deny the value of this signing for the minimum. he's an elite passer for a big, and he might excel in doc's strong-side defense. guys who can move like he does are pretty much made for it anyway.

now all we have to do is snatch olshey from portland, put paul pierce in a time machine to get the 28 year old version back and win the next 50 championships.

or maybe let's just start by trading jamal crawford for chris andersen and shabazz
