The cap hit on the Karl-Anthony Towns rookie max extension is: $27.25M, $29.43M, $31.61M, $33.79M and $35.97M. Towns will be subject to the poison pill restriction this season and the extension will begin in 2019-20. For trade purposes, $7.8M (last year of his rookie contract) is used for outgoing salary and $27.6M (the average of the current salary and max extension) for the purposes of determine incoming salary. The total salary could increase to $190M if Towns earns All-NBA, MVP or Defensive Player of the Year this season. The cap hit in 2019-20 would be $32.7M if he earned one of the honors.

I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out that the Wolves didn't want to give Butler a max. Maybe they told him something like, we have to extend KAT, given his age and his talent.

But we don't want to go into the luxury tax to sign you.

Well, it's been reported by HoopsHype that that was the case and other media outlets have basically acknowledged as much. It's safe to assume that Thibodeau was probably on board with giving Butler the max but ownership was not, which precipitated Butler's calling for a meeting with Thibs, which led to his trade request...a request that was apparently made previously but ignored by the T-Wolves brass. The KAT extension talks were also put on hold precisely to resolve the Butler issue.

Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, a.k.a. Chris Jackson, mentions how the discord between LSU teammates Shaquille O'Neal and former Clipper Stanley Roberts reached a point where they were going at each other with trash cans. Abdul-Rauf even distinguished the two big men from each other by describing Roberts as the more talented of the two with Shaq having the better work ethic.
