NBA Slightly Amends Intentional Away-From-The-Play Foul Rules

Clearly DJ's biggest weakness is his poor FT shooting.

Let's say the league offers one of many different options. 3 shots on an intentional off-ball foul. Possession and a shot. Choose your shooter. Whatever you like.

How do you rate his impact now that he can't be zoned out of the game? As an example, we said in the past we'd trade him instantly for paul george, but i'd imagine that's a lot closer now, right? Where do you place him value-wise now?

DJ's Increasing Value

I was just having thoughts before your post about how DeAndre Jordan's value would be increased with the likely adjustments to the hacking rules. There's a building momentum in sentiment that DJ should be an All-Star eventually. Jared Dudley, in J.J. Redick's most recent podcast, actually said that he thought DJ was snubbed from All-Star consideration. I'm still not convinced of that, personally, but I thought he was approaching Dwight Howard's level based on their head-to-head matchup during the previous postseason.

Given the turmoil in Sacramento, I could even see an argument to be made that he and DeMarcus Cousins could switch positions in rankings of NBA centers some time in the next few years. Cousins, while more naturally gifted, is still at the center of the turmoil for the Kings. DJ has shown an ability to box out effectively when he puts his mind to it. His free-throw shooting and woeful perimeter defense continue to be sore spots.

Assuming that DeAndre is still a work-in-progress (how much longer before he finally gets it?) and Cousins continues to be uncoachable, I think it's fair to say that DJ could surpass DMC. However, it wouldn't take that much for Boogie to explode in sustained production once a coach reaches him while DJ continues to take baby steps in his progress forward and consistency continuing to elude him.

I'm one of those guys who is generally leaning against changing the rules to accommodate the few supposed professional basketball players who can't shoot a simple free throw. I've changed my stance a little given how coach's are exploiting the loopholes in the rulebook. I just want to see the loopholes closed so that we can get back to playing competitive team basketball instead of degenerating into a free-throw contest for the league's most embarrassing players in that regard.

I think it only impacts his value marginally. He can still be fouled in crunch possessions "on ball" when he sets a screen or goes for a rebound, and I was never of the thougth that hacking him 10+ times in a game greatly favours the hacking team. Yeah we score less but we get to play with a set defense too.

Horse-riding a poor free throw shooter is now a Flagrant Foul Type 1. It's not just free throws and a free possession. Do it twice, it's an ejection.

seems kind of scummy to change rules midseason

Practicing More with the Right Hand Should Help Regardless

I've proactively shot my free-throws both left-handed and right-handed when I used to shoot alone in the gym and I can tell you that it helps. It forced me to focus on the mechanics of my left form in trying to mirror my right form. Plus, it opens up neural pathways on the less used portion in your cerebral hemisphere. DJ should have less issues than I did starting out given that he is already pretty adept with this right-hand. In any case, he needs to put more arc in his free-throw shot whether he shoots right-handed or left-handed. Heck, I'd be a proponent of him shooting it under-handed if he would be truly open to improving his free-throw shooting.

Dan Woike, Orange County Register (2/22/16)
“I’ve tried for the last two years to convince him to shoot free throws right-handed,” J.J. Redick said. “I really have. He jumps off his left foot, which is how most right-handed people jump. Their left foot is their dominant foot. He shoots every single jump hook, and tonight, running hook, with his right hand. He finishes around the basket with his right hand.

“He’s really good at it.”

When Jordan threw out the first pitch at an Angels game this summer, he was more Nolan Ryan (righty) than Randy Johnson (lefty).

DeAndre Jordan Gets It Right in Clippers Win Over Suns: What You Need to Know

Dan Woike, Orange County Register (2/23/16)
Despite throwing with his right hand, despite jumping off his left foot, despite swinging a golf club or tossing a bowling bowl with his right hand, he’s not a righty – or even ambidextrous.

“No,” he said, “I’m left-handed.”

“I think because I’m the only left-handed person in my family, they tried to force me to do stuff with my right hand,” Jordan said. “I can do a couple of things with both.”

Shooting free throws, though, isn’t one of them.

Jordan, a career 42 percent free-throw shooter, said he’s not making any drastic changes.

“I tried to shoot with my right hand, and it was pretty much the same. Maybe worse,” he said. “I think I’m going to stick with the left because I’ve been practicing that for awhile.”

He might still be a basketball righty. I write and eat left handed, that is, I do most fine movements with my left hand, but when it comes to anything requiring more power, shooting a basketball, throwing a football, throwing a baseball, holding a hockey stick, holding a tennis racket, holding a baseball bat, all those things, I do right handed.

DJ should actually listen and realize that there's nothing odd about this. I believe Lebron also writes lefty but is a right handed basketball player IIRC.

I know he said it was worse, but he hasn't even hit 50% except for one season with his left hand, he should give his right hand a bigger chance.

I can't tell if this is a joke. I have been a defender of DJ and his free throw shooting in the past. Big hands, he doesn't get the practice that a typical long range shooter gets, the psychological issues... but this is pure idiocy.

He's been practicing with his right hand for a while... so what? Where are the results? They haven't and probably won't happen. So why not try a change? From how immature he seems at times, he probably tried free throws with his left hand for an hour or something one day after practice.

As a fan, this is ridiculously frustrating.

everything that comes out of his mouth wrt free throws is insulting and incredibly stupid.

"i'll only shoot ft's underhanded as a last resort"

really? when's that? after we lose a WCF bid because you missed ft's? after we lose in the last seconds of the finals? please tell me when it's important enough for you to care about ft's.

Big hands is also a fake excuse, there are a ton of big handed players who can shoot FT's extremely well. I don't even think DJ's hands are bigger than Kawhi and Giannis for example, but seriously I wonder how long this right handed practice actually was.

If DJ is tracking all his shots in practice and he's shooting 70%+ in practice, then he has an argument, but from practice footage I've seen, he'll shoot well sometimes, then awful sometimes and probably averages to about 50% or so. If that's the case then he does need to change something.

Well, big hands being a problem doesn't mean every guy with big hands is gonna be exactly as bad as DJ, but it might make it harder anyway. If you look at all the guys who've been this terrible in NBA history, there's definitely a pattern of the type of body they have, so even without doing a serious study I think you could say the anatomy of a player does influence their effectiveness in shooting FT's.

But yeah, he should definitely give it a try and remake his form with his right hand.

I don't really think it is the hand size. It's always guys who are already bad shooters based on mechanics who get the excuse of hand size. In general bigs are worse than other guys are shooting, so it will be some big man with large hands. Then we have guards and forwards with equally large hands and they have no issues shooting accurately, but those guys who do have some funky shooting form already get the hand size excuse.

I know that for some of them it is being so muscular and trying to shoot with their body facing straight to the basket as opposed to turning their feet like the majority of good-great shooters. This causes them to be stiff and not relaxed and they have issues shooting straight on any consistent basis. The one thing you want to at least do in shooting is shoot straight.

Basketballs are just so big that you would really have to have some unrealistically large hands for your primary shooting problem to be the size of your hands.

I don't think DJ will try the right hand too much, but he is very right dominant on the court, so from personal experience he is probably a right handed basketball player who is shooting left handed.

i hadn't considered it before, but dj might very well be better off as a tilt shooter from the FT line. my guess is he's never experimented with pointing his feet diagonally a little as he shoots.
