Geez. Another player option for Doc's son. Watch him get $10 million per on top of that.

Ya'll acting like we gave him Mosgoz money lmao. For a young guard who played his heart out in the playoffs this is a good deal imo

Applying Funds with Limited Resources

Post#6 » by Ranma » Sun Jul 3, 2016 12:50 am

Given how limited our resources are, I'd prefer we spend our money more wisely to address the holes on our roster. I would have rather signed Eric Gordon to the 4-year, $53-million deal he just got from the Rockets from a value perspective and I don't even like that deal given the wear on EJ's body.

He did play well in those last couple of games but I was surprised to learn that he only show 23.5% from 3 in the playoffs.

E'Twaun Moore got 4 years, $34 million from Pelicans, as a comparison.

well at least we kept the right one among the bird right trio. glad Green and hopefully Jamal aren't coming back.
also looking back, seeing how the pricetags escalate, DJ's contract was a bargain. great deal by the clipper FO. those discontent members of this forum better get used to the current market of NBA no matter how inflated they may think it is.

but this also probably means that we are out of Durant sweepstake. I wonder what JJ's payday would look like next year.
ehhhhh f it.

yeah but unless we are trading JJ, I don't think EJ fits well with us anymore. with CP and JJ, we really need a combo guard who can compliment both, and EJ is strictly a 2 guard. Austin is still a work in progress, but now hopefully with Jamal gone, he can put in 30 minutes a game and be able to play off of CP and JJ. with EJ, it's gonna be either EJ and JJ split time or we gonna see that dreaded 3 guard lineup where all 1-2-3 are undersized.
ehhhhh f it.

Bringing Back Junior

Post#10 » by Ranma » Sun Jul 3, 2016 1:15 am

I'm not opposed at all to having Austin Rivers back. It's just that I still want to be fiscally responsible. At the very least, giving him a player option for year 3 seems unnecessarily favorable to him unless Durant communicated that his intention is to sign a 1+1 deal with OKC to seriously become a free agent 2 years from now.

I'll concede that Rivers is clearly the more versatile player than Gordon since he's a combo guard, after all. In any case and I've said this when we drafted David Michineau, I like the possibility of having Michineau and Austin forming a tenacious defensive backcourt off the bench even if both continue to be works in progress.

uh what

gordon was never a true combo guard and he was often turnover prone but he did handle the ball quite often in his best years with us. i'd trust him with the ball over rivers by miles.

I meant that Rivers was more versatile because he's the combo guard as opposed to Gordon who is strictly a 2-guard.

I'll concede that Rivers is clearly the more versatile player than Gordon since he's a combo guard, after all. this is the reason why I keep bringing up about having our own D league team. David Michineau, although shows potential after seeing the first summer league game, is far from being NBA ready. he has light, soft feet with fluid body control to be a PG. I don't think his ball handling skills are all that much, his shooting seems completely shot, but has enough athleticism to become a player in this league down the road. he would need to play every day to horn his skills and I just don't see that playing time being available to him, just the way Wilcox and Dawson never had. I can't see Brice being much better either, he may just be content to collect his rookie contract and fall back on his degree once he is prematuraly out of the league. I can however, see Diamond Stone contribulting from the day 1 as a bench big who can score. I can also see him co-exist with DJ and Blake, although spacing when he is with DJ on the floor will be dicey.

I'm sure more moves will come to displace the rooks out of rotation, but as of now, if our bench consists of David Michineau-Austin Rivers-Branden Dawson-Diamond Stone, we will have no spacing and interior defense will be highly questionable.with that lineup, we WILL need Jamal back. I hope it is true that Cole is coming back, and we trade Brice for a equal value SF. at this point, we really might end up seeing Lance back as our SF. god help us all.

Talking About Gordon

Given the health issues of both players, I would like to have both J.J. and EJ on the roster with EJ as the backup. Obviously, that wouldn't appeal to Eric very much on top of his ill will over the fashion in which he was traded after Olshey promised him otherwise. Gordon would serve the role that Jamal Crawford did as primary scorer off the bench. We'd certainly be better off with EJ in that role than we have been with Jamal. He would also serve as insurance if Redick were to depart next summer.

Gordon's ball-handling ability would offset some of the limitations of Michineau if Doc plays him like Pop did with Tony Parker early in his career. I recognize that EJ is no longer the player that he once was, especially on the defensive end, but I still think he'd be of use to us. In any case and like I said, I don't like either of those deals as I was just citing EJ as a comparable and preference to Junior Rivers' deal. The point is moot now, anyway.

However, in light of Hann's Twitter argument, it may not be as bad as I thought as I'm trying to wrap my head around the new salary-cap realities. Still, I wanted to use most of our available space to address the long neglected SF position but our options have dwindled and Hann notes that Pierce would need to retire for us to open up significant space to address that or bring back Aldrich.

Tough to turn down $36 million?

Was he talking to any other team?

Was he an RFA or a UFA?

Austin Rivers had a player option for just over $3 million for 2016-17, which he declined to become a free agent. There's been talk that he's gotten interest from other clubs, but to what extent has not been made known as far as I can tell.

If Jamal leaves then I like Lance coming back. The issue that everyone talked about before last season was that he needed the ball in his hands, lust like Jamal. But even then, Lance didn't play 1 on 5 like Jamal does. I would take Austin, Lance and another guard (I'm not going to speculate on who is available for how much anymore, this is crazy) over just Austin and Jamal.
