The DeMarcus Cousins trade to the New Orleans Pelicans shook up the NBA landscape, more so on Twitter:

After all this, we got the word...

I even had a great conversation with Hoops Habit correspondent Zach Geoghegan on Twitter.

Twitterverse wrote:Zach: Why would the Clippers sign Matt Barnes? He doesn't benefit them in terms of winning the West but sure go ahead and waste that roster spot.
Wammy: Sentimental reasons, nothing more. Clippers really missed him ever since he was traded for Lance Stephenson. They're gonna miss out on Carmelo Anthony, P.J. Tucker and Wilson Chandler. If you can't get the best small forward, then get your best friend back.
Z: I understand that aspect, but that doesn't help them win.
W: I honestly think the Clippers were never meant to win. It was about erasing 40+ years of Donald Sterling [Ed. Note: I made a goof, it's 33 years. Sterling became an owner in the 1980-81 season. But 40 is a good exaggeration as I clearly had conference finals in my mind.]. It took the Spurs 20 years before they made their first NBA conference finals in the mid-90s. Six straight playoff visits is better than seven in 40 years.
Z: If they aren't meant to win, then why bother playing? If you want to win, get the right components. Barnes is not one.
W: Good question. For the Clippers, it's playoff credibility. More realistically, the right to keep Paul and Griffin in L.A. Rumor is, if the Clips lose early again, Paul and Griffin will be gone. Already, there's speculation of Chris going back to the Pelicans to play with DeMarcus Cousins and Anthony Davis. The only way they can keep Paul and Griffin now is to make the conference finals this year. It's an ultimatum season.
Z: I agree that this season has major implications on the future, but what I'm saying is that Barnes doesn't help them get to the conference finals. Barnes has been underwhelming this season and even though the Clips need a 3, Barnes can't contribute like he used to. He's just an unnecessary addition to a team that needs a true 3&D guy to get them to the conference finals. That guy isn't Barnes.
W: Should they bite the bullet and trade for Melo, even if it means giving up Griffin? Clips see him as a lucky charm.
Z: I personally don't think they should unload any of their Big 3 for Melo. It'll help with shooting, but they'd lose much more. Now, if they can somehow acquire Melo without relinquishing any of the Big 3, they should throw a lot of their assets to get him.
W: What do you think the Clippers should do? All the best 3&D wings are gone. Clips are stuck with faking the "3." I think they're stuck with who they have.
Z: There are guys they can get like you said with Tucker or even Danilo Gallinari. They have assets to trade for guys like them, they just need to pull the trigger.
W: I don't think Doc is capable. He's too enamored with the love-friendship-family angle. More so, because of his son.
Z: His son is the first person he should trade along with J.J. Redick. If Doc doesn't want to, he's just digging his own grave.

Did you ask why JJ? I'm a big fan of his and I think he is a great fourth piece for this team

I don't think Barnes clears waivers. Too many teams need to hit the salary floor if I remember right. The Nets have nothing to lose without a draft pick so why not pick him up. If nothing else he'll be on a one year contract come draft night, not a bad trade chip

I could see it if a trade occurs. They might need some wing help if Crawford or Johnson gets traded. However, I think Luc is a better overall player than Barnes right now and that Johnson is a very similar player- just younger and more athletic, albeit not as tough. If the roster stays the same as now, I'm not sure how much playing time Barnes would get.

Also, do the Clippers have a roster spot available?

luc is definitely the better player. but barnes could help us more than alan anderson and brandon bass, both of whom we should be able to move on from.

I don't want to lose Bass. We don't have any better options for a skilled big man if / when another injury occurs

We all know who should be waived, and his first and last initials are the same, P

Nobody is picking him up to pay him $6.4 million next year, when the Kings are already on the hook for that.

agreed.

I would love to get Barnes back, but over who? do not want to lose our rookies for him, and surely do not want to lose our key role playing/bench vets, such as Bass, Luc, Felton, Speights, even seldom played Wes or Alan.

if we traded Jamal + 1 for an upgrade rotational player while openig up a roster spot that way, hell yeah. by all means. loved his attitude on the court.

i mean ideally we move crawford/anderson/pierce and we bring in barnes + whomever + open roster slot for a midseason addition.

but bass doesn't play all that much or all that well so if moving him is the cost of getting barnes, so be it

I would actually cut Pierce to sign Barnes. Paul can then sign a one day deal and retire with the Celts.

and if any one of DJ, Blake, or Speights go down with an injury for a month, Bass would be the most important piece to come off the bench. no way we let him go.

No, I didn't. I have an educated guess on why though.

Redick is a system player with a unique special ability: he is the only guy in the league who can guard James Harden effectively. However, the Clippers are set on the Warriors, and they don't have anybody to guard them. A small player standing at 6'4", Redick's shots can easily be prevented by the Warrior's length.

Tough Call. Barnes and Luc are similar types of players, both defensive oriented. Luc is a little better at getting steals, and Barnes is a better passer than Luc. Luc is shooting the ball well this year, but Barnes is a more assertive scorer. Barnes has an edge with his toughness factor. Barnes may have a little better chemistry with the first unit. When Barnes was starting for the Clippers, we arguably had the best starting unit in the NBA. I would not mind picking up Barnes and starting him. The best case scenario is a good trade, such as a Pierce trade. that would open up a spot for Barnes.

MAJOR UPDATE

Matt Barnes, the Clipper's best friend, has joined forces with their arch nemesis, the Golden State Warriors.

Talk about an ultimatum. Now Clippers are forced to defeat both their arch nemesis AND best friend for the Big 3 to stay together AND stave off a predicted 15-year playoff drought.

And because the Clippers are too hell bent on love, friendship and family - no thanks to Doc Rivers - I don't think they'll be able to beat them.

Well this is actually good news for Clippers and other WC teams.

The expectation is that KD will be out months, not weeks, per Woj tweet.

Clippers will probably have to beat Spurs or Rockets in playoffs, not the Warriors.

Ugh as if it wasn't hard enough watching him in a Grizzlies uniform, now we gotta watch him wear that ugly yellow thing
