Commissioner Adam Silver supports Clippers' arena plan

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said he supports the Clippers’ efforts to build an arena in Inglewood because it could ease scheduling conflicts among the team, the Lakers and the Kings at Staples Center.

The project would contain a practice facility, team offices, a medical clinic and parking.

There’s also ongoing litigation pitting the proposal against Madison Square Garden Co., which owns and operates the nearby Forum.

“I have talked to Jim Dolan and Steve Ballmer about that lawsuit,” Silver said. "Obviously it's not something you like to see between partners in the NBA. I don't think there's a role for the league at the moment, but it's something that we're paying a lot of attention to, and there may be an opportunity at some point for us to help create some sort of reconciliation, but right now it's existing sort of outside of NBA governance.”

An angle that I haven't thought about yet. Could Silver help soften the rift between the Knicks & Clippers? If the Knicks don't have a legal leg to stand on then I wonder if Dolan would be willing to throw a few bucks towards Ballmer if he were willing to choose a different site like at Baldwin Hills/Crenshaw or Long Beach...

I'll re-post this article. I thought the Baldwin Hills mall site was a good idea among the other options being thrown around in the email discovery process during one of the earlier lawsuits.

real estate development is shady business with high stakes. there is never a win-win-win situation. someone will have to be the loser.

Yeah, I saw that a few weeks ago. The article doesn't say anything about the current situation though.
Any updates?

We're in a holding pattern. Just waiting for the September 20th court hearing. The plaintiffs won the right to a hearing that basically says that Ballmer's arena location was supposed to be studied as a site for affordable housing before anything else.

I find it confusing though. The FAA has supposedly ruled that the location can't be used for any housing due to it being in the LAX flight path. If that's so, it would seem to be a waste of everyone's time to have a hearing over something that's already be ruled ineligible for housing.

The only reason I bring up the article is because it discusses other sites. If Inglewood does fall apart, I would hope that Ballmer has backup plans

The red box is roughly how much space the new arena would take. Green is a general flight pattern for LAX. There are plenty of residential housing on the flight pattern. Look where Forum is and look how big the old hollywood park is, stadium itself takes maybe 20% of the entire land. the rest will mostly be parking lots.
The argument to say Clippers arena land should be used for something else like affordable housing is pointless, when you are using area size of 8 football fields as parking lots to be used maybe 20 times a year.

L.A. Clippers Unveil Plans for New Arena and Entertainment Center in Inglewood

“My goal is simple. I want the Clippers to have the best home in all of sports,” said Clippers Chairman Steve Ballmer. “What that means to me is an unparalleled environment for players, for fans, for sponsors and for the community of Inglewood. Our goal is to build a facility that re-sets fans’ expectations while having a transformative impact on the city we will call home

The proposed arena will have a three-dimensional oval design with a unique exterior of diamond-shaped metal panels inspired by the concept of a basketball swishing through a net. In addition to attractive aesthetics, the panels have been designed to provide solar benefit for maximum energy efficiency, as part of the facility’s LEED GOLD-certified design.

The facility’s most striking feature, intended to highlight the temperate climate of Southern California, is the integration of indoor/outdoor “sky gardens.” These landscaped areas for food and beverage will be accessible from every concourse level. The complex also envisions a multi-purpose plaza complete with concert stage, community basketball courts and space for the community to gather and watch everything from Clippers Playoff games to movie premieres on a supersized LED screen.

The new arena is looking even more amazing than I assumed it would be. Of course, the best part of the announcement is that it's all privately funded.

No more Grammy road trips is the second best part of getting a new arena. The first one of course is not sharing Staples with the Flakers
