We don't need to own an affiliate to scout, find and sign players to 2-way contracts. The Blazers don't have a G-League team but they have CJ Wilcox on a 2-way contract. The Pelicans and Nuggets don't have one either, and they still have two guys each on those 2-way contracts. What's changed is the Clippers started stressing the need for scouting and developing players, and that started happening before the Agua Caliente Clippers, before Jerry West, and before all of the new regime.

Not saying owning an affiliate team won't end up reaping benefits eventually, I'm convinced it will, but right now it's just a way to spend money with very little benefit. You could do what we did without owning a team.

But isn't it much easier to develop these players when you have your own people running the G-League team? It's one thing for them to get random minutes on some random team, and another to play within somewhat of a system, with guaranteed minutes and fixed positions based on what the main team needs, have better feedback on their progress on the court, during practice, etc. Even being closer to home seems like an important advantage. Or sending a main player to practice with the G-leaguers while rehabing, that could also have a positive impact. Sure, simply having the team does not guarantee anything, but I wouldn't say there's very little benefit to it.

Im also not going to get back into this debate, because I think its nonsensical, for the most part.

Short answer, yes. Not to mention not having to reassign guys to Fort Wayne, Erie, Maine, and all over the damn place each time they are sent back down.

But it's a very good point about not needing a G-league team to sign people to 2-way contracts.

And in years past, we'd have wasted millions of dollars on a D-league team for the sole purpose of giving Brice or Wilcox or Bullock or Diamond Stone some minor-league burn and they suck anyway. Most of the "success stories" are guys who played only 10 or 20 games in the D-League and came to the NBA to stay. And anyone could have snatched Ty Wallace right off the ACCO roster before we gave him Jamil's 2-way slot. It's nice he knows half the plays but we got lucky--there's a good chance anybody who's any good isn't even going to be there when you need him.

Yes, a G-League team is better than no G-league team. But that's not the argument.

It's no coincidence that G-Leaguers are transitioning more smoothly into the NBA game than their predecessors when they're being coached and developed by NBA personnel within the framework of NBA schemes.

Yeah, we happened to find 3 serviceable players from our G-League affiliate in one season, which is more than Doc has ever found for the Clippers through the draft and D-League as President of Basketball Operations. Funny how that works, huh?

Not really. None of these guys are playoff-rotation worthy at the moment; they may never be. Doc got Luc, Felton, Speights and Collison to come play for next to nothing. They are.

The AC Clippers are about to tip off against the Westchester Knicks on ESPNU right now, if anyone's interested.

I'm impressed by Tyrone Wallace. Jazz should have kept him instead of Royce O'Neale (who's doing OK), Naz Mitrou-Long, etc etc etc.

Jazz could have signed Tyrone Wallace to their G-League team same as we did. If they're not on a 2-way [Wallace was not until a week ago], you only have to pay them like $10 bucks an hour. He must have been unimpressive in camp after they drafted him in 2016. [He was the 60th pick, after all.]

Ty has hit 4-of-9 from distance after shooting only 25% or so in G-League. There will be a regression to the mean.

Bentil Makes His Way to Clips, After All

Post#109 » by Ranma » Thu Jan 18, 2018 9:18 pm

If I recall correctly, there were rumors during the 2016 NBA Draft that Doc and the Clippers were interested in Bentil as a first-round pick but it was being put out there by his agent, God Shammgod, via NBAdraft.net to try to up his draft stock. I suspect the G-League 1st-round pick was the centerpiece of the deal but maybe Doc had interest in Bentil, after all. Not like that is impressing anyone who knows better.

Still, I would think Wilson is more useful and talented than Bentil and whatever becomes of the pick.

Wilson was useless for the Clippers moving forward, unless they made a trade, dropped salary, and cleared a roster spot to sign him down the stretch.
Plus, why would I want to go to the NBA? Duke players suck in the pros.

I liked Bentil a lot at the college level, unfortunately, his style of play doesn't fit the modern NBA

Travis Walton was allowed to continue his duties as a student-assistant to Tom Izzo after he was criminally charged for punching a female Michigan State student at a bar in 2010, according to a report from ESPN's Outside the Lines.

The report says that Walton, who was the Big Ten defensive player of the year in 2009 and led Michigan State to the national championship game that year, was accused of sexually assaulting a different female months later, after the Spartans reached the Final Four that season.

A 1st Bust For A 1st Bust: G League Trade

Post#115 » by Wammy Giveaway » Thu Oct 11, 2018 8:52 pm

Remember when the Clippers drafted Michael Olowokandi, the worst pick of all time? Well, the Clippers have a new draft bust: Anthony Bennett, by way of the G-League:

well, I'd definitely dump Angel, who's shown me nothing, and give the two-way to Bennett, in the off-chance we can bring him back from the dead

otherwise, anybody can come in and scoop Bennett away from us for free

VERY GOOD.

The original rule was probably to prevent teams from overusing the 2-way guys without converting them to full NBA contracts, but that only hurt the 2-way guys by putting them on the plane the day of the game.
