I've been wanting to get rid of Jamal for awhile. I know it's not official yet. I don't mind giving Gallinari a try. I was hoping that we wouldn't trade a 1st round pick this offseason though.

nothing has been finalized. most internet thinks its the Houston's first rounder, which really won't be as valuable as our own, hopefully we didn't give away our pick. I am assuming the trading partners want a few more pieces out of us, and I can totally picture Doc already having had a verbal agreement to give away more, but Steve is standing his ground after consulting with Jerry.
I am reaching here, of course but how wonderful would it be that this series of events end up causing Doc to get fired, and Jerry steps in as a temp acting GM, trading Austin and Kyle/Wes packaged for something useful, and complete the Gallinari trade without getting ripped off?

I'm starting to wonder if this deal is on hold waiting for Hayward to announce his decision. If Hayward leaves the Jazz, then Gallo could end up signing with Utah outright. Then we get stuck with Rudy Gay or worse. Hope I'm wrong, but it would be so Clippers to get the rug pulled out from under us just as we're about to acquire a legitimate small forward.

What are the contract details for Gallinari? I hope to the bball gods that its 2+1 Team Option, cuz the poor man is made of glass. If its a full 3 year or player option on the last, the shine on this deal loses alot of its luster. Dumping Crawful however is a HUGE boon.

Nvm then. It will be going to Denver. I heard about the 2nd on NBA TV earlier today from David Aldridge.

I'm very annoyed that we are losing a pick in acquiring Gallo. Ranma has been consistent in discussing why we may not lose any of our picks for a while. I hear it.
My beef still is:
1) I'd like to see Jerry West try and find value in the draft.
2) We are going to be hard capped and these picks might literally be the best and damn near only way to improve our roster next offseason.
Good franchises create their own value developing players. Losers (Doc) just covet other players and burn assets to try and acquire them because they're "proven." We need to be the franchise finding the Danny Greens and Johnathan Simmonses of the world.

Too much is being directed at West, but a lot of these moves actually look like Doc moves, especially after I read the three Clippers are pursuing Rose.
Sign a player (this case Jamal) and then use a draft pick to dump them later, yea, sounds familiar doesn't it?
Hawes + Barnes for Stephenson, then Stephenson + first for Green
Doc has wanted Gallo for a while, so I really hope this isn't a just a little bit too late situation. Gallo has slowed down, but hopefully not slowed down enough where he can't be an effective SF defensively.

well, I don't doubt him as a person, but for a 12 PER rated player, he wasn't good. I am sure you will love watching Lou, who is basically the same player and a few inches shorter, but makes up +5 in PER over Jamal.

I don't have love or hate for this trade. However, I'll be OK as long as Gallo and his style is the right guy on the floor to helps Griffin's potential and serve what kind of player he could be.

Barring injury, our approach of retooling now has our 2019 pick likely headed to the Celtics while the pick we got from Houston now goes to Atlanta, so we'll have our 2018 pick to use in the first round of the next draft albeit likely around the edge of the lottery. To be honest, I don't mind giving up the Rockets' pick to get the Gallinari deal done since it's likely to be a late first-rounder.
Would I have preferred that we kept it? Of course. Like you said, the more opportunities we give Jerry West to mine the draft,
the better off we'll be moving forward. You make an astute point that has long been lost on Doc that the draft is the lifeblood of successful organizations sustaining their levels of excellence when they have star players occupying so much of their cap space.
At least West will have the opportunity to make his first selection in the first round for the Clippers after next season. I'm still catching up on reference materials on our 2017 second-round picks, but as far as I can tell, they look like solid selections who should be able to contribute if given the opportunity. Another key factor of West's arrival is of him possibly convincing Doc to change his approach, particularly his handling of young players. We can only hope.og15 wrote:Too much is being directed at West, but a lot of these moves actually look like Doc moves, especially after I read the three Clippers are pursuing Rose.

That's a good point that Gallinari does seem like a Doc-type player, which shouldn't really be a surprise since he's involved in the meetings with Frank and West to chart a course for the organization. As much as we would like it to be different, Doc was not going to relinquish input into where the organization is heading. Ballmer is going to give Doc at least a season to see what he can do with a roster put together with West's advice. Maybe he hangs himself with the leash given to him. We'll just have to wait and see.
The point is that West is not left alone to run things by himself given his role as special adviser and especially because of his age.
He even said as much when he stated that he was not here to replace anyone. He's said on more than one occasion that it's not up to him to call the shots; he's only here to advise. This sounds like setting Doc up so that he can no longer make any more excuses for failing.
We know West is capable and even inclined to make forceful arguments when the situation warrants it, but it sounds to me like he's trying to hold Doc's hand through this process while putting him in a position where Ballmer can hold him accountable for his BS. As much as we prefer otherwise, Jerry West is not working his magic alone in a secure room isolated from Doc and his cronies. For now, he's trying to teach the blind how to see.
Going back to the Gallinari trade, it may very well be that he was Doc's target, but we're fairly certain that Doc would not have had the foresight to hold out for Houston's pick or even have the protection be top-3 instead of lottery-protected (like it was in the Jeff Green trade). Doc very likely would have panicked and settled for practically anything Houston was willing to give him in the face of losing CP3 for nothing. West got him the most out of a bad situation even if most of the players were Doc's type of players. That's generally what a GM does for his coach. West just does it better than most and provides a safeguard against Doc doing something recklessly stupid. You know, business as usual.
Quite the contrary. The Rockets and Nuggets trades indicate to me that things will not be the same moving forward. We finally unloaded Jamal Crawford despite all these years of Doc trying to do so. Yes, we had to package another first-round pick in order to do it, but it was not our own for a change, plus, it netted us a player to fill the small forward spot, a position Doc has been unable to capably fill during his time as Clippers coach before Jerry West arrived.
Things may appear to be the same in certain respects, but that seems to be by design and I can optimistically say, for a change, that things most certainly are not the same as before.

pretty sure the outgoing pick is a rivers move so I definitely would agree. caution against giving west credit for everything.
even though doc is still a scum lord IMO
