If he doesn't care about rings, do the Clippers still give him a max deal?

[Speaking theoretically here.] It's not that Kawhi doesn't care about rings, but he's got one and he doesn't have to go chasing one like CP3 and a half-dozen others who ain't got.

Bron was trying to pile them up for legacy purposes, but it looks like he's made the same decision now by joining the Lakers--lifestyle, location. No more dragging a bunch of mooks on his back in frigging freezing Ohio.

Kawhi's staring at the same scenario except it's frigging Canada.

From what I understand, Kawhi still wants championships presumably to prove himself away from the Spurs but it seems that he also wants to do so as the main guy, which gives some credence to him not wanting to step out from under the Spurs' shadow only to get under LeBron's with the Lakers. The Lakers are reportedly still a consideration given his preference for Los Angeles and his desire to win but the Clippers and Raptors are supposedly higher on his list of preferences presumably because he wants to prove something.

If Kawhi didn't care about winning championships, I doubt Jerry West would sign off on pursuing him for a maximum commitment.
The Logo's previously stated affection for him was due precisely to Leonard's all-out play at both ends of the floor.

Regardless of me being a Clippers fan, if I was him I wouldn't want to join the Lebron show on the Lakers either. He'd just be the next instance of Chris Bosh and Kevin Love by going away from a lot of his strengths and just being told to play defense and space the floor for Lebron. While Lebron ages and the rest of the roster is not great. Let's not forget he wouldn't be the first guy, Irving asked out of the Lebron train and George didn't want in.

Nothing against Lebron himself, he pretty much guarantees a ticket to play far in the postseason, but you have to give up a lot to play next to him. If it was my career, I'm not sure I would want that.

Love how we've literally done nothing to "deserve" this but exist in Los Angeles.

Let's be real: with the crap we've all gone through as fans of this team over the years, we deserve a literal All-Star roster that puts the Warriors to shame. 8-)

Nah we deserve it.. Every franchise in the league pays players in us dollars but big cities are really starting to matter again. Back in the day it seemed like we didn't even play in Los Angeles considering how bad we were and no player in his right mind would want to play for the Clipps. But now its really hard to fathom a player not wanting to play in LA no matter whether its for the B Team or the A Team. LA has always been a big city but its finally starting to really become "That City" in the US. We paid our dues, its about time we finally get some prizes falling into our laps for being located here.

I think players are looking at two max slots.

In Kawhi's case, his fiancé or girlfriend, the mother of his child, lives in LA so if he wants to see them, LA is supposedly his main choice.

But man he's taking a double hit. He left money on the table when he forced his way out of San Antonio and he'll take another hit if he leaves Toronto. Tens of millions in both cases.

I'm sure Ballmer, West, Jenkins would put KL in the best position to maximize his brand on and off the court. Being the hometown kid, playing in the #2 market opposite of LeBron would be huge for himself and the NBA.

Liking Our Chances

Things can change (see Paul George in Oklahoma City) but I like our chances in signing Kawhi Leonard this summer. We're a deep team in need of star power with committed ownership and a first-rate front office. Plus, we're building our own arena next to what's anticipated to be the greatest sports venue ever. Not to mention that we'll have salary cap space to bring in two max-level players.

For a guy who supposedly wants to be the face of a franchise and has apparently longed for Los Angeles, I think the rumblings of Kawhi's preference for the Clippers is legit.
