Some of the several articles (and talk radio segments I've heard lately) floating out there about this. Think it's legit, at least in terms of the interest on the Mavs' side. Gotta think DJ would be interested too, if the Rockets dream doesn't pan out. He was obviously interested before, and it's close enough to home that his family could come up all the time.

if so, wish DJ would opt in so we can make a trade. we can use his salary off the books, especially if we can get picks in return too.
ehhhhh f it.

Agreed, but I'm assuming he's going to be trying to get something more long term since the Mavs have cap space.

MAvs signing DJ to a long term contract would be a bad move. I know they are currently focusing on reaching the playoffs, but its a very shortsighted move.

true, after this draft, our core players' ages going forward, are Shai@19, Jerome @21, Tobias Harris@25.

Mavs still have youth and can rebuild and are rebuilding, with Dennis Smith Jr, Harrison Barnes, Nerlens Noel, and now their crown jewel Luca Doncic. but they are still playing around 40 year old Dirk. pair him up in the front court with now 30 year old DJ who suddenly had his blocking disappear last season, would not get you too far in the western conference.
ehhhhh f it.

Well long term probably won't mean 5 years, but DJ opt and trade is a one year contract for him, also the Mavs won't want to give up assets when they can sign him outright. So long term in this situation and be a 2+1 contract.

Would much rather have traded him, took the Cavs 25th pick, and been on our merry way.
Even this thread isn't worth it.

Keeping him around to make the 8th seed and fork over a mid 1st rounder aint worth it.

For sure.

Could have replaced him with Robert Williams if the clipper wanted. There were good player to be had in that range.

Every team try to make the Cavs pay way more than they should because teams know they are desperate. I think the Clippers overplayed their hand a bit. It was time to cash in imo.

Probably DJ opts into the one year remaining player option for $24m.

Just a little insight from someone who lives in Dallas (moi) ...

I don't believe DJ in Dallas is as bad for the Mavs as some of you think. They traded their 2019 first rounder, so there's no reason to tank. They have a gaping hole in the middle, so DJ won't be in the way of any developing young talent (unless Salah Mejri and Satnam Singh get you excited). Dirk can't guard his shadow anymore, and while DJ isn't as good a defender as his rep, he's a lot better than what they have now.

Finally, it's wise to build around young players, but learning how to play in this league and learning how to win in it are very different things. I think the Mavs, after a year in which Cuban was on record saying they were tanking, are done with that and want to start winning games again. They also owe it to Dirk and Carlisle to give them a reason to get up in the morning.

Let's hope we can make a trade. I'd rather not sit through another season of DJ mailing it in like he did last year.

Do we have reason to believe DJ is opting in? If he's not, none of this matters. If he does, it could be as part of a trade. If he does, and he becomes unrestricted next summer ... that's a massive expiring contract, which is a great thing to have.

Sorry to be that guy, but we're not gonna get anything at all from the Mavs. If they want to get him on a one year $24M contract, they'll do just that with their capspace and not pay anything to us. It just makes no sense for him to opt in and get traded, it only benefits us, and teams don't go around gifting assets.

Only way we get something is if he wants to go to a team way over the cap like Houston, and only way that happens is if we take a bad contract like Ryan Anderson. Which we won't, and that's the reason he wasn't traded at the deadline, cause we didn't want to eat Tristan Thompson or John Henson's contract.

no one is going to stop him now. Blake, CP3, JJ, Pierce, they are all gone.
