Then who?

Honestly? Unless Durant is interested in actually competing and earning rings again, forget 2019. Our front office should already be focused on Giannis in 2021.

Do you only want the best of the best, the ones who give you an instant championship?

That's NOT gonna happen.

There's also something to be said for not committing yourself to paying a lengthy max contract to a player who has notable risks that could hamper your ability to field competitive teams later on. See Blake Griffin, Baron Davis and Danilo Gallinari. Counting on other teams to take on such salaries later on is typically an unwise strategy when such trades usually require also packaging valuable assets along with the unwanted player.

The Clippers are building themselves into a destination franchise and there's already signs of that coming to fruition even without our own state-of-the-art home arena, so we got to get over the habit of just being willing to spend big money on whomever is willing to take it. We're better than that and, as such, should be operating in that fashion by being selective in whom we make such commitments to.

Well he bought a big home in LA recently, though I think half the stars in the league have homes in LA by now.

That's a fact. Nothing he does as a Warrior will ever impress me. If Iguodala could win Finals MVP with that bunch, Durant doing it is a big yawn.

But he'd have been the greatest if he signed with the Clippers instead?

They were a season removed from having won.

But sure, he was suppose to go to a team with an inferior roster to make it "fair."

Crying about competitive balance in the NBA shows an ignorance of NBA history.

now now
don't be putting words in people's mouths

it's just that there's a lot more to greatness than putting up numbers on a team that's already great without you
LEADING a lesser team is a far greater accomplishment

getting OKC to the Finals was a much bigger achievement
just as Bron's Finals losses were bigger achievements than KD's rings

If you say so.

I doubt losing in the Finals are going to be remembered as much as people who won the Finals.

That OKC team was loaded. They underachieved if anything.

Perhaps. But OKC haven't made the Finals without him, and GSW won the Finals without KD. And I think Bron's near-misses speak to his greatness almost as much as his rings--his 8 straight Finals appearances.

There's more to sports greatness than just skill and athleticism. KD could be Top 5 in those categories, but that's simply not good enough to be mentioned in the top tier.

Frankly, I put Steph in that upper stratosphere, who unfortunately for KD, is considered by many--including me--to be the wind behind his sails because he creates the space on the court that GSW so easily flies through. Steph won without KD, and until KD wins as the alpha dog somewhere, he's never going to get the acclaim he might even rightly deserve.

FTR, on a personal level, I don't blame KD for going to join his Christian friends to have a happy and ring-filled life. But this is the choice he made and he can't have it both ways.

OKC had questionable coaching with all that talent and then they traded Harden.

Then Westbrook hogged the ball.

Yes, I was trying to give KD big props for what he accomplished in getting OKC to the Finals, laying the groundwork for KD's claim maybe being valid.

My larger point is that he's not going to get the credit he wants until he does it as alpha dog.

MJ, Magic, Bird, they were alpha dogs. Can't be in the GOAT discussion when you're sniffing the lead dog's butt.

First of all, there’s no such title or accomplishment or award such as GOAT.

That’s just something people on the Internet to discuss.

Secondly, MJ, Magic and Bird played with some of the greatest players in those eras.

None of them singlehandedly won it by themselves. There was a 50 greatest NBA players about 10-20 years ago. That list included players like Pippen, Kareem and McHale.

And I doubt those players would look down on KD for not being alpha dog, except maybe MJ.

KD has a good chance to meet or exceed the ring counts of Magic and Bird. But he may decide to move on after this season.

Anyways, if KD had come to the Warriors in a trade or was drafted by them, the haters would still hate.

Yep.

It’s not his choice to go to a 73-9 team and remove all doubt from who would win in the NBA.

It was the fans on the internet....the ones who love Steph, enjoyed his unanimous MVP season, and make him the #1 selling jersey....they were all hoping for Durant to choose GSW so they could specifically hate on GSW, him, Bay Area sports, SF.....ya know....the things sports fans have always hated on....for years...

Give me a break.

I actually think when a lot of time goes by, the Warriors are gonna be remembered as that dominant team that won 73 games and a bunch of rings. IE- mostly remembered for that one year they didn't win the Finals.

Maybe.

As a Warriors fan, I'll appreciate anything they add to what they've done so far. Maybe they meet or exceed the achievements of some of the greatest players in history, maybe they won't.

But they've won while playing a great style of basketball that other teams are trying to emulate. They've changed the way teams evaluate players, how they construct their rosters.

Maybe it'll be a fad for awhile and teams will switch back to more post-centric game eventually or midrange game will become the dominant paradigm.

Or maybe they've redefined the modern game for at least a generation.

I know it's hard for a lot of fans of other teams to accept but for basketball aficionados, this is some of the best basketball the NBA has witnessed, in terms of intelligent scheme, clutch play, great culture, unselfishness.
