No sure I don't get the reasoning of this deal... why do we want Harkless to take up $11m cap space? also why do we want to help Heat get Butler?

His contract is expiring, we also got a first-round pick, and we can still afford Kawhi. This trade is just a creative way to improve our team, I guess.

That first-round pick could also be an asset to help get Kawhi a second star in a trade if he chooses us.

I don't get what Miami is doing either.

Butler isn't going to propel that team into a higher seed. If they make the playoffs, it will be as a lower seed, playing against a juggernaut in the first round.

And they already have plenty of bad contracts on that team, including Waiters.

I agree. Not like they're anywhere close to being a championship team with him. They probably go from missing the playoffs to a 6-8 seed.

He benefited from the infamous spending spree of 2016, got himself a 4/$42m contract despite averaging 6 points 4 boards a game. Likely to play for minimum contracts after this one.

If we were to get Kawhi, I think we'd be right at the cap. Will it help if we were to sign Beverly after using all the cap space , since we have his bird rights ?

Mo is a career 61% from the free throw line?
My eyes glaze over when reading alternative stat (not advanced stat) narratives that go many paragraphs long. If you can not make your point in 2 paragraphs it may not be a great point. :D

and 32% from the 3 point line. shot 27% last year. maybe he is a good defender that basic stats do not show? I don't know. I never watched him play that I can remember.

Could we, hypothetically, trade those 2 picks and our 2022 pick? I know you can't trade b2b picks, but if the pick is from another team does that still count?

You must have a first-round pick, doesn't matter whose.

The Text:

“7.03. First Round Draft Choice. No Member may sell its rights to select a player in the first round of any NBA Draft for cash or its equivalent, or trade or exchange its right to select a player in the first round of any NBA Draft if the result of such trade or exchange may be to leave the Member without first-round picks in any two (2) consecutive future NBA Drafts.”

From there, attention turns to “without first-round picks” which has become one of the more common misconceptions over the years. The Stepien rule contains no distinction between a team’s own first-round picks and any others they may possess at that time.
