    The Clippers are rumored to be one of the top free-agent destinations this summer and could open up two maximum-salary slots if need be. As a result, it seems unlikely that the team would cut into its precious cap space by trading into the first round and thus absorbing the cap hit of a rookie contract. Furthermore, LA has three second-year players on its roster in addition to four more players under the age of 25. For a team that is trying to contend, there simply are not enough developmental minutes to go around if the Clippers were to add another young player into the mix.

    In addition to all of its own future first-round picks, LA also has the rights to a lottery-protected first-rounder from Philadelphia in 2020 as well as an unprotected first from Miami in 2021. The Clippers could theoretically convert one of those future picks into a selection in this year's draft, but don't count on it.

    Second-Round Possibilities

    LA has the 48th and 56th picks in this draft. The team's best bet is to take productive college seniors with limited upside who can nevertheless contribute immediately. Incidentally, the Clippers have a player just like this on their roster already: Sindarius Thornwell. The South Carolina product was selected at no. 48 in 2017, and though he is incredibly unproven offensively, he came into the NBA ready to defend, which is how he has made an impact in Los Angeles.

    The Clippers have already worked out a number of four-year players who demonstrate this trend:

    Nick Weiler-Babb (Iowa State),
    Chris Clemons (Campbell),
    Charles Matthews (Michigan),
    Terry Harris (North Carolina A&T),
    Sedrick Barefield (Utah),
    Ahmed Hill (Virginia Tech),
    Cody Martin (Nevada),
    Dean Wade (Kansas State),
    Justin Wright-Foreman (Hofstra)


    Those names don't share much in common positionally, so it seems like LA is looking for experience and immediate plug-and-play ability.
