2019 NBA Draft Talk

Way too early to start this topic probably, but as there's not a lot going on, I've been watching some highlight videos of the top prospects and I'm a bit hyped at the amount of quality wings at the top.

I'm specially loving Nassir Little, if we had the chance to add him to Shai as core future pieces, this would be a tough two-way team for years to come. Barrett looks like he has a good chance at being your typical scoring wing star, but those tend to have more variance so until we see him in college it's gonna be hard to project him. I'm skeptical about Zion Williamson, but the French guy looks great too.

I know a lot of people are not very encouraged about the depth of this draft, but the top is looking great and it would be a perfect year to have a top pick.

Got my Early Big Board up a second away, and I agree with Nassir. I have him above Cam, RJ, Zion and so forth. I'm higher on Bol Bol than most folks are (a bit of it has to be bias after seeing him dominate at Mater Dei).

As far as the depth of the draft goes, there's a few late glue guys but overall, it is pretty mediocre. Some second rounders, at least projected to go late first/early second right now, I wouldn't mind are Brian Bowen, Jaylen Hands & PJ Washington.

All the less reason to tank.

It's either a full blown tank to try to get Reddish/Little/Bol/Barrett or get into the final 8 and give Boston the pick this year.

Well, yeah, that's the corollary. Go big or not at all. This past draft was rare with its depth. Shai went at 11 and didn't really "drop." This being a more typical year--if not a thin one--the gold looks concentrated in the first few picks.

Ballmer is not going to go full-blown tank. It's not how he rolls. But hey, with a few key injuries and/or trades, we could easily become one of the worst teams in the league. All is not lost.

Or won.

Or you know, whatever...

Bowen is garbage. Love Reddish and Little though.

Depending on where he goes, I like RUi Hachimura too.

One apparent hole is those getting drafted in the 2nd round. The protections and benefits for 2nd rounders are pretty nil and aren't worth passing up a return to school for. But this seems to say that by getting drafted 59th, you get barred from going back to school.

That sucks bigtime.

I'm high on Hachimura. If he goes late lotto, I wouldn't mind him.

99.9% of the guys who declare for the draft, are invited to the combine, and then go undrafted arent going back to college anyway. They are declaring for the pay check, be it in Australia, China, Europe, or even the G-League.

I could be wrong about this, but it looks like if they go undrafted, I think they're eligible to go back to school. The worst thing would be getting drafted in the 2nd round--which is crap--and losing your eligibility.

NCAA baseball players, if they don't like where they're drafted, have leverage against the major league team and can simply choose to go back to school if the offer isn't attractive enough.

Mostly I think the NBA's 2nd round is a bad deal for the players all the way around. Better to be a UFA and be able to play the teams against each other, and if there are no attractive offers, simply go back to school and try it again next year. That would be best for the players and that should be the NCAA policy. I don't know why it should be different than with the baseball players.

Players that go undrafted are only eligible to return if they were invited to the combine and were not selected in the NBA Draft.

http://www.ncaa.org/about/flexibility-going-pro-and-getting-degree

NBA draft flexibility
College basketball players who request an Undergraduate Advisory Committee evaluation, participate in the NBA combine and aren’t drafted can return to school as long as they notify their athletics director of their intent by 5 p.m. the Monday after the draft.

This change is effective if/when the NBA and NBPA make an expected rule change, which would make undrafted student-athletes who return to college after the draft ineligible for the NBA until the end of the next college basketball season.

There is a different new rule which allows players to receive financial assistance if they leave school and return within 10 years. However, they had to have been on scholarship for two years prior and exhausted all other options.

Obviously, picking your own team to sign with over being drafted is ideal, but we are actually seeing that happen with the creation of the two-way contracts. I know multiple players have said they would not sign a two-way deal with a team should they draft them at the end of round two. That said, guys declaring, and staying, in the draft, are far far more often than not ready to move on and collect some sort of paycheck to play ball.

Okay, But What About This?

Say you get the combine invite, get undrafted, but an NBA team still likes you enough that they willingly give you an opportunity to earn a contract by way of non-guaranteed training camp deal. You get the pre-season, but you will get waived. This was the case with Joe Ingles: joined the Clippers as an undrafted player, waived him (because of Doc's favoritism for 3-guard lineups, I'll ask about this on a separate thread), but then the Jazz claimed him, and is now living the NBA good life. What if it applied to an NCAA player?

Yes, Jeff, that's where I was going with this. Getting drafted in the 2nd round is garbage. No guarantees, league minimum at best if you manage to make the team. Better to not have been drafted at all so you are still eligible to go back to college.

The NBA's 2nd round is a ripoff for most players. ALL players, if you count the fact that if they were FAs like Joe Ingles, they could pick the team they have the best shot at sticking with, or pick the team that guarantees the most $$.
