That the talks collapsed twice in such a short span should be surprising to no one who has followed the Wolves throughout Taylor's quarter-century of ownership. The same Taylor who held onto Kevin Garnett and then-General Manager Kevin McHale for too long. Who allowed himself to be talked into hiring the thoroughly ill-prepared David Kahn as McHale's replacement. Who could have escaped his Butler nightmare by accepting a package from Miami that would have been headlined by the promising Heat swingman Josh Richardson and a protected first-round pick.

Minnesota really can’t hope to do better under these dire circumstances, which stem from Butler's declaration just days before training camp that he would not be re-signing with the Wolves in July as a free agent.

Yet Taylor balked. And then balked again.

Miami, Brooklyn and the Los Angeles Clippers are the teams known to most interest Butler in the long-term. The fact that one of those three is willing to furnish a young player as highly rated as Richardson, along with a potential first-round pick, would enable the Wolves to recoup a good bit of what they gave up (Zach LaVine, Kris Dunn and the draft pick that became Lauri Markkanen) to acquire Butler.

Yet it apparently wasn’t enough for Taylor, who now risks alienating Miami to the point that the Heat czar Pat Riley pushes away from the table. I can’t understand how even Taylor doesn’t see it after all these years of gaffes — Kahn’s selection of Jonny Flynn over Stephen Curry with the sixth pick of the 2009 draft is merely the most egregious.

I like it. Butler's never been a golden boy, a top pick. He's had to work for what he's got and he's not going to let this season slip away quietly.

He controls his destiny next summer but isn't content to just wait and watch the clock hit 5PM.

Hall-of-fame basketball writer Peter Vecsey, citing a source, had the details in his latest Patreon column.

“A valued source informs me the Clippers could’ve had Jimmy Butler, but his antics and attitude impelled them to sever talks,” Vecsey wrote, before quoting the source.

Rockets must think its now or never for their team. I like the aggressiveness but its a huge risk for a guy who has issues on 2 teams in 2 years. I guess the Rockets feel their picks will be so late in the first round that they are almost second round picks. Paul, Melo, and Butler on one team? Going to be very interesting in that lockerroom if they don't win.
