well, he's no Jeff Green, but who is?

looks like another slick FO move, whether or not we actually end up keeping him
Miami cut him to avoid the lux tax

Philadelphia 76ers should claim Rodney McGruder despite playoff ineligibility

The Sixers’ upcoming financial situation will get tricky, especially if Jimmy Butler and Tobias Harris both return. Assuming Ben Simmons gets a max extension in 2020, the Sixers could soon have four max or near-max contracts on the books. Adding depth around the margins will be paramount.

At 27 years old, McGruder is a capable 3-and-D presence who’s entering his prime years. He averaged 7.6 points and 3.6 rebounds with the Heat this season, starting in 45 of 66 appearances. He also shot 35.1 percent from deep, hovering around the league average.

The Waive's Got A Plus - But A Minus Too

Plus: This buys some time for players like Lou Williams, Montrezl Harrell, Danilo Gallinari and Patrick Beverley to get healthy. McGruder will play in the game versus Jazz.

Minus: By bringing in McGruder, the Clippers are conceding to a 1st round match up with Warriors. McGruder's stats are mediocre, if not negative all across the board.

He can’t play in the playoffs. This move was simply to acquire his RFA rights with the hope he can be cheap depth while maximizing the cap space you have. And it was a good move imo.

Rodney is a 3 and D depth guy. Nothing more. But he plays hard and can succeed in that limited role. Best of luck to him and you all.

Another undersized 3 who can D. Making Thornwell and Wallace superfluous because unlike them, Rodney can shoot the 3 a bit.

Great pick up, this front office keeps showing they can make rotation players appear out of nothing. If they have to trade a bunch of depth for a top player, or to open capspace, he can man the wing pretty well, and his cap hold is pretty much nothing.

It also shows long term thinking instead of going for a quick fix for the playoffs with no long term upside, and builds good faith with the franchise we have an unprotected pick from. Could be useful down the road.

Love it.

On a podcast and TV segment in the immediate aftermath of Magic Johnson's resignation, Brian Windhorst called acquiring Rodney McGruder a smart front-office decision and pointed specifically to how the Lakers missed out on acquiring good talent who can contribute on the cheap as an example between a dysfunctional organization and a well-run one like the Clippers who did pick him up. Without getting carried away, Windhorst characterized McGruder as a 9th man.

For the most part, McGruder looks like an undersized Garrett Temple with more athleticism and quickness but lacking in defensive length. However, he's been universally praised by former coaches and teammates including Erik Spoelstra for his dedication and serving as an example of someone with heart who is willing to put in the work and unselfish in giving of his time.

Q: Moves like the Rodney McGruder release is a bad look. -- Robert.

A: Yes, it was. While the luxury tax is a concern, at the moment the only penalty was a relatively nominal amount of cash. And if the Heat are going to be free-agency players in the 2020 offseason, as Pat Riley has stressed, then the repeater clock on the tax would have to be reset at that point anyway, when the Heat would be operating below the tax. It follows up on the Heat move to trade Tyler Johnson and save about $6 million next season (with the impending waiving of Ryan Anderson), when it might take that much to get a replacement wing for Tyler (and Dwyane Wade and now Rodney McGruder) anyway. And that doesn't even get into Wayne Ellington having done enough in Detroit to push the Pistons ahead of the Heat in the playoff race. No, this has not been good look at all, especially when talking about the Heat Culture guys. Yes, the NBA can be a very cold place. But the Heat so often attempt to cast themselves at the exception. On Sunday night, not quite so much.

ASK IRA: Did dollars overtake sense in Heat waiving of Rodney McGruder?
