Just a reminder we drafted him over Michael Porter Jr.

We had picked Shai before as well. So we definitely had room to make a swing for the fences pick when he was up too.

JR...6'5" with 6'1" wingspan. If you're gonna have that profile, you better be absolutely phenomenal.

Who? Jk

Yea, that was a tough one since all the fans wanted Porter Jr, and like Quake said, already had Shai, so taking a chance was not a problem.

I just try to forget that ever happened. I don't believe Porter would be on the team if he was drafted, but I think it's possible that SGA could have been retained and MPJ sent to OKC.

In fairness, iirc a lot of mock drafts had MPJ going at 5 or 6 so a LOT of teams passed as well.

That said, you're right we could have taken a chance with SGA in the bag, and although there wasn't much else left in the draft, it hurts that Jerome was a complete NBA washout, not just a meh.

I'll give those teams this, it was considered a decently deep draft in terms of the lottery, and no team wanted to get stuck with a guy who could be out of the league in a few years. Therefore it is understandable that if you have just one pick, and you're hoping to pick a franchise player (top 5-8-ish teams), or a long term starter (all top 10-12 teams), then yea, he's a tough pick to make with his serious injury concerns. It's a gamble.

Like we all said, the issue with the Clippers is that they had two picks and therefore didn't have the same issue as the other teams where if he has injury issues you get nothing. They were the team outside of Denver (46 win team, already had a franchise player and budding 2nd star) in the lottery who made the most sense to pick him.

It was certainly a blunder, primarily because Robinson was projected by most mocks as a late first round pick, maybe even early 2nd in some. It's a reminder that no one is infallible. Jerry West has a great track record in his front office roles, but there's no magic to it. Hopefully, not for the Clippers sake as it is irrelevant to them, but for himself, Jerome is able to work his way back into the league.

at that time tho, most scouts said MPJ could potentially never play in NBA no matter where he was gonna be drafted at, due to the severity of his injury, so although at the time, I was ticked off a little, I understood the reasoning. as for JR tho, he was supposed to be a great shooter/scorer and all that evaporated when he came into NBA. I pulled hard for him but it didn't happen with us. I hope he eventually become the next Reggie Bullock and get his in NBA.
ehhhhh f it.

This is actually one of the things that's hurting us now. You have to have youth to go along with these veteran players that we have. JRob and Kabengele both first round picks and both not panning out hurt us big time. SGA gone, the first used to draft Kabengele became Saadiq Bey who's now a promising rookie on Detroit, passing on MPJ, Brice Johnson, etc. Nothing panning out whatsoever. Second round gold with Mann and possibly Oturu & Scrubb though. We need to nail the first rounder that we have in his upcoming draft. Not saying they have to turn into a star player but they need to eventually be in our rotation and can contribute to the team.

I've said it before but we needed to call Kawhi's bluff. Not trade for PG, sell him on SGA, Gallinari and first round picks (which we could have TRADED for mid season if things weren't working). He was not going to the lakers or Raptors.

Nuggets, no Murray? No problem.

Dame ‘nem done in 6.
Knocked out on their home floor.

Clippers: 3 losses on their home floor in a first round series.

-_-

The Nuggets have drafted extremely well over the course of the past 4-5 years. Also they used JyMike really well while Doc didn't use him nearly enough in the bubble last season. Portland is kind of just like us. A good #1 and a #2 combo but both play the same game and overlap each other like Kawhi & PG does. Also like us, their draft picks have amounted to zilch pretty much since they drafted Dame and CJ.

Medical team to be more precisely. A good one should be able to convince the FO so they can work with Porter Jr to see what he has. They probably said that "nah he crooks, get that guy who never injured in his entire mediocre college career."
Sam Cassell, Cuttino Mobley, Shaun Livingston, Corey Maggette, Chris Kaman.

Modestly hitting on at least 1 late 1st would have given us 1 or 2 more Mann types at the very least, cheap young rotation players with some energy so we don’t have to overpay guys like Morris and Kennard. One might be a 3 point shooter, the other might be a defensive big, etc. They don’t have to be great, just guys that can provide some quality minutes at a good price.

Unfortunately the biggest mistake with MJP seemed to be that medical report. It sounded like the entire FO wanted him, if the report was only slightly less negative I bet we would have taken him. The FO was of course aware that we had 2 chances with 2 good picks.

Obviously in hindsight we should have gotten a second opinion or something like that, probably would have been less negative and could have totally swung the pick. What really hurts is to imagine that we could have included MPJ in the PG trade and had Shai right now (or vice versa of course.)
