Now a permanent fixture for the Clippers, one question remains:

Did he take a paycut?

He signed for the maximum possible money. I believe that is the exact same contract as PG. So it starts at $39.3M this year, and the PO for 2024-25 season is $48.7M.

Good thing this is over and the team can worry about other aspects

I’m surprised he didn’t take the 1+1 and get the max next summer.

Thrilled that we don’t have to worry about this for a few years now though.

He left money on the table again. Will he be eligible for an extension after year two or three? Something to get another bag?

Given his injury history, maybe he just valued security more than the most possible money. Either way, it's obviously fantastic news that he's committed longterm.

I wonder if that was what took so long- perhaps he wanted the 1 + 1 to maximize his earning power (signing the 5 year max after next season), but Ballmer wanted a longer commitment and Kawhi caved eventually. Who knows?

He could have opted in and then extended for even more money, so not sure why he didn't do that.
Plus, why would I want to go to the NBA? Duke players suck in the pros.

Well we got Kawhi and PG locked in for the rest of their primes. Hopefully the FO can maximize the roster around them for the rest of that period.

3 + 1 and only 2 if this year is a wash
very Kawhi

keeping his options open cost him money
$50 million??
oh well--after $100M it's all monopoly money anyway lol
it's how he rolls

probably expected to get the feelers from other teams that Durant did--and didn't

frankly, unless I were the Pistons or the Kings or the Hornets or some such dogspit I wouldn't trust Kawhi with 1/4 of my sal cap and my future and the face of my franchise, sorry

I think the market for Kawhi was much more shallow that he thought so he finally took the dough
Kawhi is where he belongs
he's always felt like a hired gun
now he's home at lasssst

Don't know about you guys, but I'm pretty happy with how this off-season turned out.

after 3rd year he'll opt out and sign a 4 year deal averaging something like $55M per year. This is a calculated move

That’s what I figured. This or an extension. Not sure what the latter would look like compared to a new deal.

There was no way he was leaving money on the table or giving the Clippers a hometown discount.

TBH I think he’ll be too old in 3 years to get another long max deal.

In 3 years he'll be the age Steph Curry is now, 33, who just signed a $215M extension.
