Interesting. How does this reduce our tax bill?

Hood and Ojele are signed to the minimum.

I saw people complaining about value on Twitter. We saved $30 mil on our tax bill AND also generate a trade exception for nearly the full MLE, which lasts until the deadline next year. Thats value enough.
Plus, why would I want to go to the NBA? Duke players suck in the pros.

Don’t see Hood staying on but Ojeyele is interesting depending on other moves. If any.

Trade exceptions are almost never utilized since you can't combine them with other players. Pretty useless for us too.
It was a straight up money saving deal for the team.
Hood & Ojeleye (assuming Hood will be released/bought out) make a combined $4M. Ibaka made $9.7M. That $5.7M difference is multiplied by 4.75x because we are so far up over the tax.

I'd bet we will buy out Hood and Lakers will sign him, and media will declare him the missing piece of a championship team :D

They are used all the time. It just provides added flexibility. Doesnt mean we are getting a starter with that exception. Also, since Ojele and Hood are on minimums the TE is for $9.7 mil.

Basically a straight cash play.

Hartenstein makes Ibaka expendable and it ain't my money so.

well, generating a TPE of that size isn't really a straight cash play, it's creating an asset in the future that can be used to take back someone trying to save money. and for a front office devoid of draft picks, it's a solid get to make something out of nothing, especially when serge was likely gone this offseason anyway.

That's a solid sized trade exception. Usually they are too small to be useful since they can't be combined with players, but almost $10 million actually becomes a solid one.

I mean what's realistically the average market value of a ~10 million TPE? Seems like the bigger consideration was the tax savings and maybe doing Ibaka a biggie.

So long Serge. Wish him well in Milwaukee. He still got some game left, can definitely help Milwaukee if he can stay healthy. It just wasn't meant to be for him and the Clippers.

Good move for saving money but the Clippers really do need a point guard and a more athletic big man. Maybe off-season goals I guess.

I guess this is only the first domino to fall before the deadline? Hope so, because this is pretty underwhelming outside of the luxury tax savings. Hood and Ojeleye aren't very good and I don't see the advantage in keeping them.

Spurs sent Derrick White to Boston for Josh Richardson (and Langford), picking up a 1st rounder

It can be all of the above, really that add up to a decent trade for us.

If there were no other trades for Serge, we're basically kicking the can down the road for a year instead of letting his contract just run out. Now we can use that money in the offseason if there's some utility.

Or it could be that we make another trade and absorb more long-term salary, and the 2 TPE's we've acquired make that future payroll more palatable. Just adding Powell's next few years was not nothing (even if his deal is very reasonable.)
