To recap:

Paul has no interest in staying on Wizards. He'll look for a buyout:

Odds are he'll join Lakers. So why am I posting this on Clippers board? Because there's this sense of remorse, guilt, and shame. Clipper fans want to make things right with Paul after how he left the franchise under bad circumstances. Select tweets:

Ever since they traded Paul, all of their point guard choices have been poor to bad to awful. They had to fake the one by having shooting guards, forwards and centers pretend to be a point guard, even trotting out a poor man's version of the Triangle at times to make up for the loss of their beloved Point God and savior. But nothing could ever replace the Clipper's greatest point guard of all time. Even though Paul has defeated them twice in playoffs as payback for taking him for granted (in a sort of karmic punishment), the one thing they can't stand is seeing their former savior to their arch nemesis. If Paul joins Lakers (and LeBron is still there), it's all over.

Paul still harbors feelings over his former team. His worst playoff results have been with them, never getting out of the 2nd round until he left Clippers and joined Rockets. His only Finals berth came because his opponent was the Clippers, and revenge is the greatest motivator. Clippers know it's their fault for surrounding him with highlight reel players over real championship leaders. They now have a leader-by-example in Leonard, Doc Rivers is out, and Jerry West is now running things. Michael Winger, the current Wizards GM who used to work for Clippers, can be that mediator in resolving their differences and soothing his return. But Clippers still have their usual issues - wanting to be loved like Lakers over simply competing for championships.

Question to Clipper fans: how do you feel about a Paul-Clippers reunion? Do you want him back? What makes you suggests things will be different this time around?

We’re about to pay more for CP3 than the Suns did for Beal. Shoot me now.

The entire front office needs to be fired for even considering this. I am so sick of watching old man basketball, it's unbelievable. We already know he's either going to choke or get injured in the playoffs, what's the point?

If we're getting CP3 back, then I also want Blake & DJ, with Doc on the broadcast next to Brian.

Age38/39 CP eh?

What could go wrong?
We’re supposed to avoid drafting and acquiring young cost controlled talent for the “certainty” of this geriatric guy eh?

Guess the best Clipper ever does get to finish up as a Clip.
Guess it will make one hell of a story if this team can actually win a ring.

Trading for CP3 is worse than Wizards trading Beal. Why not try and get Shamet too so we can really cap off the stink.

This was the Clippers package post-Lakers veto:

- Eric Gordon
- Chris Kaman
- Al-Farouq Aminu
- 2012 1st round draft pick

What's the package now?

If the Clippers are still going all-in on Leonard and George then whatever. Might as well bring back CP3.

Going to be pretty embarrassing though if all three are injured and unavailable come playoff time.

EDIT: Dang, forgot Clippers still possibly have to trade for him. Only if MMSr. is part of the deal.

If this actually happens: this front office will have traded Kennard just to get older, slower, more expensive, more injury-prone, AND tank our draft position in the process. All for a first-round exit this year and maybe not even that going forward. And they all got promoted for this!

This franchise is at least 20 years behind the rest of the league. They aren't serious about winning.

Not only a no but **** no. Why do we need ANOTHER injury prone player? Dumb move unless something else is in play. PG Kawhi and CP3 will play a combined 10 games together if this happens

I love CP3. He is IMO best player to ever ear Clippers uniform. BUT he is not what we need. We need a fresh start, and move away from injury prone players (that includes Kawhi and PG).

OK. so this is interesting. CP3's contract calls for a fully non-guaranteed $30M in 2024-25 season, if this season is guaranteed.
That's not really valuable to Wizards as they'd be rebuilding. BUT could be extremely valuable to a competitor in a trade to match salaries, say an S&T for a potential 2024 free agent like Sabonis, Dejounte Murray, Jaylen Brown or Siakam.

What does that mean for us:
Salary Cap is expected to be around $143M in 2024-25 season. We have $148M committed to Kawhi & PG (if they pick POs), Zubac, Norm, Mann and Bones. Assuming FO is committed to continue to double down on Kawhi and PG experiment, and would have 2 more future FRPs available to trade next summer, CP3s non-guaranteed contract could land us one of those players in an S&T scenario.

This might the logic in trading for CP3 now. I'm not saying we should. Since April I maintained my position to trade both PG and Kawhi.

There’s so many different ones depending on how they want to complete it. I’ll try to gather a few of them.

You're giving this FO too much credit by assuming they're thinking that far ahead. They're just obsessed with collecting big names who used to be good because it's easy to sell to casual fans, and actually having to develop young players is scary.

I'm tired of star-chasing and talking ourselves into dumb moves due to the promise of future star-chasing anyway. We are never winning squat until we draft our own cornerstone player.

The Ol' Doc Rivers Logic

So I decided to look back at Chris Paul's playoff resume:

Code: Select all

Mavericks  WL
Spurs      LLW
Nuggets    LWL
Lakers     LW
Grizzlies  WL
Warriors   WLL
Thunder    L
Rockets    LL
Blazers    L
Jazz       LWW
Wolves     W
Clippers   WW
Pelicans   W

Doc River's way of basketball is bringing in guys who played with him before or have defeated him. That's why Clippers brought in guys like Josh Smith, Pablo Prigioni, Marreese Speights, Epke Udoh, Luc Mbah A Moute, J.J. Redick and others: "Show me how you defeated us, because you're going to do what you did against us to our advantage." Of the teams Paul has won playoff series against, there have only been three where he never lost. Whereas Paul has one of each over Wolves and Pelicans, look at Clippers: he has two.

Clippers are starting to think like Doc Rivers, only thinking about the past and trying to rewrite history in their favor as supposed to working in the present. Clippers cannot bring back Paul just because of the past.

Wow, that is awful. I never thought we could dump Morris and get worse, but giving up three of our only non-geriatric players in the deal for a 40-year-old CP3's bloated contract would do exactly that.

Lol, CP3, great player in his day, even two seasons ago at late late prime be was really good, but now? Come on, injury prone teams shouldn't add more injury prone players for much money.

Our FO loves washed veterans, Lawrence Frank will convince Ballmer CP3 is the last missing piece for this team to win the Larry.

Agreed. This FO makes me tired.

I’ve seen Morris/RoCo for CP3/Shamet.

Mann and the 30th pick being involved in various versions.
