9 years is enough for a stickied thread. Around the NBA II is being retired. Onto number 3!

Post your thoughts about non-Clipper player, team, and whatever NBA related stuff here.

I'd like the CLIPPER ALUMNI thread to be sticky. We all often write posts about our ex-Clipper fam--for good and ill lol--but there's no proper place to post them.

A lot of times they [and the discussion of them] junk up the live threads so it would kill two birds with one stone.

Only one game in, but JJ is doing some nice stuff with that Lakers offense so far. If those players keep buying in, he's got some good stuff there, we know he's got good basketball knowledge, so we'll see how it goes.

Happened to watch sixers-raptors game from last night which also includes 2 guys from the clipper organization attended to watch.

I gotta say Jamal Shead and Jonathan Mogbo, Raptors rookies from 2nd rd of 24 draft are here to stay as NBA players. Something I can't say for our 23 1st rd pick.

This is who PG left the "B-Team" with a "bad culture" for.

Not too surprising on Philly struggles and drama..

Everyone hyping them up in the off-season and pre-season, were just feeding the machine from the assembly line. "Oh Philly's gonna be a title contender", "Oh Philly had the best off-season".

No. Not so much.. they definitely got better, though.

Still very early, but chemistry is going to have to develop into January now.. but its still always a toss up if they'll be healthy come end of first round.. and Embiid can be mouthy/too emotional, in a good/fun way, but also at times a bad way (like with the reporter).

Everyone kind of downplaying Embiid/PG13 health issues were so off.

Gotta be healthy to have a true chance to get to ECF, at least, and then they could beat Boston if so.

Embiid has to learn from that reaction to the reporter (the shove, not the words per say) and not do it again.

KD will miss like 2 weeks, Suns drop the first game without him already.
And Chet is gone for minimum 2 months.
western conference are going to get some ugly standings.

With the new CBA, the prohibitive cost of trading for big names, and how physically taxing the modern style of play is (requiring lots of depth and youth), this is going to become the new norm for well-run franchises. It's just idiotic to trade the farm for one player on a huge contract who's about to enter his decline years (or, in other cases, is already there). The future of the NBA is drafting and development.

Sadly, it'll take another 20+ years for the Clippers to figure this out, long after every other team in the league has.

But the Rockets can't pay all their young players either.

Jabari Smith will have to get paid, also Eason.

They can get off the FVV and Brooks contracts eventually but they're probably going to trade either Sengun or Green.

Also what about OKC? They seem to have their core and championship ready team already locked in.What to they do with 30 draft picks over the next five years? Rosters are set at 15, you can't add/absorb 3-4 new players to your team every year. Plus they have a couple of top prospects stashed for next season.

OKC had unexpected improvement from SGA -- nobody expected him to be an MVP-level player, nobody, because anybody claiming so is doing historical revisionism.

Also Jalen Williams is showing All-NBA form for the #12 pick out of Santa Clara.

They also got good role players, like Isaiah Joe who suddenly became a 40% 3-point shooter after I think the 76ers just cut him.

Yeah those picks have to be in the top half of the lottery or else the player they draft with those picks are unlikely to get a lot of playing time, if even making the roster.

Yeah, it could also mean releasing some quality first rounders they just drafted a year ago or trading them on the cheap if they don't fit their timeline or budget. That's where a team like us and other teams who have gambled away picks to win now might swoop in and scoop a few of these players up.

They weren't going to sign Giddey to a big extension for instance, nothing over $15 million a year and even that might have been too much.

They're going to have to extend Jalen Williams and Chet to big extensions next summer or by summer of 2026.

Cason Wallace is playing 25-26 minutes a game so in a couple of years, he'll also be up for an extension as well, though maybe not as much since he's not starting.

The real test is how much the ownership are willing to pay in a small market. They sell out their games but they're not generating huge revenues.

The future stars and superstars hit the ground running. The problem with "developing" your stars is if it takes 2-3 years for them to develop, by the time they get good enough, you gotta pay them. [And by pay, I mean PAID.]

Jalen Brunson is a perfect example. The Mavs got just one cheap top-drawer season out of him before he got PAID.

Trey Lyles on the block.. decent 3/D PF with good size. Sux he's in the same division though.

I like Lyles. Always have. I think he’s the definition of a guy who is slightly above average as a player and helps in a lot of ways, even if it isn’t by a huge amount. His numbers gradually improved after he entered the league. Although his play has been inconsistent—sort of a two good season, one bad season thing—he’s been valuable taking on multiple roles with multiple teams. He just turned 29. He’s help us plenty.

The main thing is that Lyles plays a position and way that we could use. He really is a PF/C—he’s a practically a physical clone of Bobby Portis, and plays about two thirds of the time at PF. I think he’s being misused in Sacramento, but I get why it’s happening. Lyles is brought in as a defensive guy with the Kings right now. He isn’t perfectly suited for that, but he’s a frontcourt guy that can do a little of everything at a decent level (which is why he’d be valuable for us) and the Kings are slotted him for a perceived need. Still—his usage is 13 this year, which is ridiculous for a frontcourt guy that has a decent shot and range (35% from three, over 57% TS% in the last seven years) and an A:TO ratio of 1.5 to 1. Those are all pretty good numbers—and he’s done it on teams that have won more than they’ve lost, and as a starter and reserve. I would be pretty confident that Lyles could come to us—or anyone, for that matter—and play 20-24 mpg for 60-70 games and give you around 9 or 10 points and about five and a half boards and shoot 47% from the field and 35% from three, and play at both PF and C.
