Maggette's Future?

When the subject was broached with Maggette several weeks ago, he said that it was not something that he felt comfortable talking about at the present time but gladly would address the topic at a later date.

By deciding to opt out, Maggette would become an unrestricted free agent and would be walking away from a guaranteed $7 million for the final year of his six-year contract. The Clippers, however, seem confident that they can sign Maggette to a new multiyear deal.

"My answer is the same as it was in the fall,'' team president Andy Roeser said. "We expect to be able to re-sign him, when the time comes."

Dunleavy equally was optimistic.

"There's no reason for me to think otherwise,'' Dunleavy said, when asked if he was confident that Maggette would remain with the Clippers. "Of course, he could go anywhere.''

Dunleavy pointed out, however, that Maggette would be in position to reap more financially by returning to the Clippers, who could sign him to another six-year deal, rather than the maximum five-year contract another NBA team could offer. Maggette's yearly percentage raises also would be higher if he re-signed with the Clippers, rather than if he signed with another team as a free agent.

Several questions here.

1. How much will Maggs demand for how many yrs?

2. If he demands too much, will it be better for the Clips to trade him before the deadline?

3. Considering that he's been on the trade block for the last three seasons and considering his performances as a Clips. Will he be worth the X amount of dollars he might demand?

Since Magz is an automatic 18-20 ppg I see no reason why we have to trade that away unless we can find someone else that's slightly better or equivalent to what he brings night in and night out. I hope he re-signs with us

Is the Clipps owner is now generous in giving out contracts to his players?
The Clipps owner I know is stingy in giving out long and big contracts. Take the case of Odom and other players he let go because of money

None of the players he let walk were worth the money they signed for, including Odom.

I do not think we need a 18-20 point a game replacement but maybe a 10, 3-5 assist and 2-5 rebouns a game type of player.

Now if we have a shot at Arenas this summer then I say let Magz walk.

I say we trade Maggette while he still has value for teams who are on playoff runs. We could get some talent for Maggette instead of letting him walk, which might help us in the long run.

I like Maggette and all and at one time he was my favorite player, so it's kind of bittersweet. With the system we currently have, he's not necessarily that great of a fit. If we end up losing him, I'd hope we get something in return (whether it's a deadline deal or S&T in the offseason) instead of just letting him walk. We have a young inexpensive player that can step in and take his position if he's not here next season. With Brand & Kaman being our go-to-guys, we really need to be concerned with finding somebody who can shoot, create and spread the floor from the backcourt.

In the even that Maggette is re-signed, I hope the team doesn't overpay for him.

i say we make maggz our 3rd option behind arenas and iguodala. this should actually give us leverage in negotiations since there are so few teams that can sign him for more than the mle.

Arenas or A.I.2 would be a nice replacement for Magz.

At the beginning of the season, I was hoping we could make a run at Arenas next summer. Now the knee problems make me weary of adding another guy with injury problems as of late.

You're right we don't anymore injury-prone players on this squad.

The more relevant questions are:

1)What's the market for Corey?
I went through the numbers in another thread, but the short of it is he'll have a hard time getting a raise (or even matching his previous contract) on the open market. He'll be on the wrong side of 30 soon and is injured for a 1/4 of the season, plus not that many teams will have cash to throw around. S&T is always an option but those are hard to predict.

2)What are our options if we let him go?
If we let Corey walk for nothing, we get to around $45m. Add in a high lottery pick and roster filler and you are at around $50m, which, even if the salary cap goes up, isn't enough cap room to sign Arenas or even Igoudala. To get far enough under the cap would mean letting Shaun and possibly Elton walk but I don't see either giving up their option year coming off of injury. Can we get an upgrade over Corey at $5-8 million a year? Probably not.

Based on what I read on this pg the chances of Corey jumping the Clipship this summer are pretty slim.

I thought you actually read something (a newspaper article) that implied that Corey was saying he probably won't go anywhere.

I still think Corey would take less $ to be on a contending team.

He could join the Spurs, Mavs, Suns, Celtics, Pistons or Magic but that still won't guarantee him a ring. I just hope he stays loyal!!
