This trade is only good if Beasley, Rose, B Lopez and Mayo are no longer available for the no. 5. Assuming the Grizz wants to draft a big man like Love who is within reach at no 7 and the Clipps wants to draft a need position which is a PG and Bayless is out of reach at no. 7.

Will the Clipps do this trade?

Clipps receives Cardinal, cash and the #5

Memphis receives Thomas and #7

YES. Cardinal and Thomas are essentially the same player: big stiffs who like to shoot the three. But at least Cardinal plays hard. Let's do it.

I wouldn't make the trade. Thomas >>> Cardinal.

Cardinal has averaged 3.4, 4.5 and 3.4 ppg over the last 3 seasons and has hit 13, 18 and 25 3 pointers over the same period.

Thomas had an off year, but with Brand back and playing less minutes, I'd expect him to rebound and provide the Clippers with some much needed 3 point shooting. He has averaged 11.0 and 12.4 ppg and hit 136 and 83 3's in his two seasons in LA.

Yes this is a great deal for the Clips, especially if OJ Mayo falls to the 5th pick.

Thomas only put up those numbers because he received desperation minutes from an injury riddled team. The guy takes too many games off(physically and mentally). With Thornton, our draft picks, the MLE, and any other free agent signings, Thomas would be regulated to the bench(hopefully 3rd string) next year anyways. Cardinal would put up similar numbers with extended minutes, like he did in Golden State.

The whole point of this trade is trading up for the #5 pick (which means Mayo or Bayless), and that alone is worth it.

We absolutely do this trade. TT is not a valuable piece to our team. Getting Bayless would be fantastic.

Cardinal is one of the worst MLE signings in the last 10 years, to expect him to revert back to seasons he had with GS 4+ seasons ago at this point is wishful thinking. He has been a deal killer for multiple seasons in Memphis and would kill this one as well. Thomas had an off year, but if he can regain the form he showed in 06/07 he is worth the MLE.

If Bayless and Mayo were worth trading up for, they would have been selected prior to #5 in a fairly weak draft excluding the top 2 players. Neither Mayo or Bayless fixes the Clipper problem at PG any better than Eric Gordon would if he is selected at #7. Mayo played almost exclusively at SG and Bayless was most effective at SG for Arizona.

TT is better than Cardinal and that is why the Clipps are getting the incentives of moving up two spot in the draft. Two spot but means a lot if you're in the top 5.

Thomas would be more useful if he didn't have to play center or if both Brand & Kaman were healthy. He played better driving to the basket this season than doing what he was brought in to do for us, Shoot threes. Cardinal would be completely useless but I'd do it to grab Bayless. Bayless doesn't solve all of our problems in the backcourt, but he is more than capable of putting in time at the point. If he's the game with Knight as opposed to Livingston or Mobley, then defense is definitely a concern.

MEM won't do this with a chance at Lopez at #5.

MIN could (and in my opinion, "will") take Mayo at #3. McHale can't afford to trade him and see him become a superstar elsewhere. Mayo-Foye actually make a good combo, with Mayo helping distribute the ball, and handling the tough defensive assignment.

If Mayo goes, #3, SEA takes Bayless at #4, and MEM gets Lopez at #5.

The "win now" contribution Tim Thomas can provide can't help them.


I suppose your best chance for this is a three-team deal on draft day. Suppose MIN takes Lopez at #3. You make this offer:

LAC GIVES: #7 + Tim Thomas
LAC GETS: #5 + Cardinal

You get either Mayo, or more likely, Bayless

MEM GIVES: #5 + Cardinal + #33
MEM GETS: #7 + Etan Thomas + MEM pick returned (Navarro, top 19 protected)

MEM has a huge whole at center, and their get a late pick back.

WAS GIVES: Etan Thomas + MEM pick returned (Navarro, top 19 protected)
WAS GETS: Tim Thomas + #33

Tim has the same contract, and helps them win now. Haywood and Etan Thomas hate each other and have constant fistfights. WAS is lux sensitive, and this moves a future guaranteed salary, for a high unguaranteed second. They can stash him in Europe for free why they try to win now.
