Clippers guard Corey Maggette will officially opt out of his contract at the end of the month, according to The Los Angeles Times.

He will become an unrestricted free agent, with teammate Elton Brand having the same option.

Coach Mike Dunleavy still believes that both will be playing for the team next season.

"The reality is that there's no money out there," Dunleavy said of the market value for free agents. Later, he added, "People will come to reality and probably make a deal. That's how I see it."

I thought there was a chance Corey wouldn't opt out, but it was a smart move for him. His value at it's all time highest at the right time. I wonder what he will get paid, and by who?

Very few teams have cap room. Most likely he comes back to the Clips. Unless, that is, there is a sign and trade.

What would the Clips be more likely to do? Keep him, or try to get something else for him?

I think a sign-and-trade is very possible, it can potentially help out ALL 3 parties-

1. Clippers get something back.
2. A contending team without cap space for FA can land Maggette.
3. Corey goes to a decent team.

Of course the Clippers could end up re-signing him. But with our roster (mainly Thornton), and Corey's likely desire to play full-time starter's minutes, a sing-and-trade trade could be the best solution for all.

If the Clips are not willing to give him a 10M contract, what do you all think about the following sign and trade?

Redick (2M)
Bogans (3M) expiring
Cook (3M) expiring
2009 first rounder
2011 first rounder

for

Maggette (10M for 4 years)

If Brand doesn't opt out (he probably wont walk away from 17M, right?), this gives you significant cap space in 2009. Something like 30M under the cap.

I'd rather just pay him the 4 years $40 million.

Not suprising, I actually thought the clips shouldve traded him before the deadline, but I guess no deals were out there for him.

I highly doubt the Clippers would-

4 years $40 million isn't bad at all. I'd rather spend that kind of money on a PG but it's not overpaying IMO.

Stretching it to 5 years, $50 million is where I think a problem could occur.

If Corey can get 4/40 million somewhere he will likely be gone. SF is his best position, if the Clippers draft someone like Westbrook to play PG, they need a better ball handler at SG than Maggette. I can't see the Clippers offering that with Brand needing an extension soon.

What about a Ronnie Brewer, Matt Harping for Maggette? Matt has only one year remaining and Brewer is a up and coming 2 that is just in his third yr.

Yeah, but who under the cap is going to give him that money? Unless the Clippers like Corey that much, it's pretty much a certainty the Clippers will get something for him in a sign and trade

Let him walk, sign and trade....I just don't want to see him on the roster opening night.
