Corey Maggette is officially a free agent.
Maggette, the longest-tenured Clipper, filed paperwork today to opt out of the final season of his contract and immediately becomes one of the most attractive free agents in this off-season's market.
The only problem is, there may not be too many buyers.
Only the Memphis Grizzlies and Philadelphia 76ers have abundant cap space this summer, with the Clippers now joining that list. Other teams would be able to offer Maggette, who was owed $7 million had he remained with the Clippers, the lesser mid-level exception.
The Clippers have maintained they hope to re-sign Maggette; however, a sign-and-trade deal with him could also be in the team's plans.
Maggette, 29, averaged 22.1 points a game for the Clippers last season.
His departure leaves the Clippers about $10 million under the salary cap with potentially more space on the way.
Clippers forward Elton Brand can also opt out of the final season of his contract today, with his decision expected this evening. Brand is due $16.4 million next season if he does not opt out.
As of right now, I'm all for a S&T for either Hinrich or Felton, they look like the most appealing to me; two bonafide PG's who are more than just a stopgap. Let's do it!

I have to say, I'm rooting for a S&T too, but by no means would I be disappointed if Maggs were resigned for $10 mil per. If he walks for free though.... y'all know.

I'm waiting for us to sign Calderon to an offer sheet, and having it matched.
We could actually use the cap space that we will be left with from the expirings of Livingston, Maggette, Aaron Williams, Sam Cassell and use it to acquire a player with a big salary via trade if we can't sign any point guards we like straight up. If Sterling chooses to use that money before using it in a S&T, that cash could land us a very good PG.

$11 million...wow.
No way we offer that, but then again, Sterling is in love with Maggs. Let's hope this does not happen.

Somebody needs to kick Sterling in the balls if he does give Maggette that much. He's lost it.

Yeah, apparently Maggette is DTS' favorite player. I don't really understand why...if not for Sterling, Dunleavy would've convinced Baylor to ship him off long ago even after the Artest deal went south.

The Iverson deal is what made us all mad!
Maggette, Livingston, and picks for Iverson. Dumbleavy didn't accept it, because of Livingston!

It's okay. We'll settle for Davis.

I know that Maggette would opt out. I know that he's not very happy and if that's the case I don't mind letting him walk. Talks of Baron Davis coming to us is heating up. It's worth letting Maggette go to get Davis.

Maggette has been contacted by several NBA teams, including the Orlando Magic, Miami Heat, Boston Celtics and Utah Jazz regarding his availability -- according to a source close to him who requested anonymity because negotiations are still in the early stages.

I think Varejao + Pavlovic/Jones for Maggs makes a lot of sense now, especially with Maggs likely leaving (for nothing), the Clipps getting their PG, the Clipps wanting some big man depth, Varejao wanting to go to a situation like LA's, the Cavs wanting to get rid of Varejao and the Cavs wanting a #2 option...

http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news;_ylt=A ... &type=lgnsThe San Antonio Spurs have targeted Corey Maggette and are the front-runners to sign the Los Angeles Clippers’ free agent forward, multiple league sources said Tuesday night.
While no deal was imminent, Maggette would be expected to sign a multi-year deal for the mid-level exception, a move that would fulfill the Spurs’ desperate need for perimeter athleticism and scoring. Maggette would be leaving the Clippers, just as the team came to an agreement with Golden State free agent Baron Davis on a contract. With so much sudden salary cap space, the Warriors could be a threat to swoop in and take Maggette for themselves. The Boston Celtics have also shown serious interest in Maggette.

I do not like the fit at all. I think Maggette would not produce as effectively with the Spurs as he would with a Orlando or Miami.
