EB still mulling over Warriors' offer

Post#1 » by JJ LoDuca » Thu Jul 3, 2008 6:01 pm

Strong indications persist that Brand will stay in L.A., largely because he explained his decision to opt out of the final year of his previous contract Monday by saying he was trying to give the Clippers some financial flexibility to strengthen the team around him. But Brand is apparently still considering Golden State's rich proposal.

It was initially expected that Brand might verbally commit to re-signing with the Clippers on Wednesday, one day after Davis told the Clippers he was accepting their five-year offer worth an estimated $65 million to go back home to Los Angeles. Brand instead flew to Washington to consult face-to-face with agent David Falk while Golden State was poised to give him a deal possibly $20 million richer than what the Clippers can offer.

Sources close to the situation told ESPN.com on Wednesday night that the most likely scenario remains Brand re-signing with L.A. and ultimately teaming with Davis no matter what the Warriors present. One source said that Brand, during negotiations on a contract extension in June, specifically told Clippers management that Davis was the player he hoped they'd pursue if he became available in free agency.

Brand is going nowhere. I have a gut feeling that we will learn tonight that Brand is signing a 6 year deal with the Clippers.

I'm not worried b/c EB going to GSW to play small ball alongside that toothpick C(Biedrins) and hothead SG/SF(SJack) is just not the business.

ESPN just reported on the SC "Right Now" segment that sources have told them that Brand is expected to stay in Clipperland. Hopefully.

I personally hope Elton Brand walks because that will free-up $15 mil in cap-space which can be used on Josh Smith to throw him a max-level type deal or push hard for Emeka Okafor or possibly explore a deal with absorbing the contract of Rasheed Wallace or Zach Randolph. I'm not worried, personally I would love to see two deals happened that I've seen suggested on the message boards... Cuttino Mobley for Jamal Crawford and Brevin Knight, Tim Thomas & a future 1st Round Pick for Leoandro Barbosa. Our team could then fill a lot of plugs in our roster through free agency as we'd still have $15 mil in cap-space, there are a lot of serviceable PF in the league that are on the block... Drew Gooden & Chris Wilcox come to mind too.

Why would Phoenix give you guys Barbosa for Tim Thomas and a pick?

So you suggest we trade Elton, Cat, Brevin Night, TT + a first rounder for Smith/Okafor/Wallace/Randolph/(insert other mediocre PF with baggage), Jamal Crawford and Leandro Barbosa? This after signing a borderline All-star PG. How does that upgrade our team?!

I agree with Tucker. EB is the best FA out there, and Smith does not fit on this team. Philly, with their young team and fast pace style, would be a much better fit for JS.

Yes, EB is definitely the best player available. Plus, we know that he works well with the other guys on the roster, is a hard worker, and has a lot of heart. Picking up Baron and winding up losing Elton, would me a loss in my opinion. We have to sign this guy.

Thinking back over all the threads we've had arising out of a succession of incidents in the past few years showing Elton Brand's character and loyalty, I feel completely confident that he will lead the Clippers to a multitude of victories in the coming year.
Especially if he asked for Baron Davis to be on the team and offered to take less money to help make that possible --- it would be staggeringly, incredibly out of character for him to bolt for bigger bucks in the Bay area at this point. I can't see it happening.
If we know anything about Elton as a human being, it is that he is straightforward and true and the essence of classy.
He'll be back, and he'll be glad he did.
And heaven knows, we'll be glad too. You never want to lose a guy of that calibre.

Watch the video in the top right hand corner. Steven A says the Dunleavy tried to orchestrate getting both Davis and Brand, and that Brand's agent was annoyed by this and started fielding offers.

I'm not really sure what to think. I don't think Dunleavy could set this up all on his own. Take a look at the video and leave your thoughts.

Its weird how the success of this team next year is all lying in Elton Brand's hands.

loflin, I've been trying to watch that video and can't get it to open --- trying to install the micro flash system they say you need to see it and am too IT-impaired to get it done.
But Steven A. Smith is inflammatory and sleazy --- and Elton is straight up.
If I have to choose whom to believe, it's surely not going to be Steven A., who is often just saying whatever loud and crazy thing that comes into his head, in order to sound as if he has the inside story and is a Very Important Journalist (you wish, Steven A.)
And it surely is going to be Elton Brand, whom I've never seen do a dishonorable thing.

P.S. My son just got home and showed me how to watch the video through Internet Explorer instead of Firefox.
Smith says Elton's agent is irritated at Dunleavy, not that Elton is.
I think Smith is just trying to stir up muck in his time-honored way. I also think he was just using this as a way to lead into his Maggette theories.
Everything points to our being able to put our trust in Elton.
I'd suggest never losing any sleep over anything Steven A. Smith says.

The former Golden State guard says teaming up with Brand, who has an offer from the Warriors, was a big reason for agreeing to terms with the Clippers.

^ You know, usually, I hate Plaschke's guts. But this time, he's right and I'm on his side. He said something similar to this nationally on Around the Horn today as well.

Elton, stay!

It's been a long time since I've seen Around the Horn or PTI. I was interested in what they had to say about the Beard coming back home.

^ Most of them said to take the $20 million. Plashchke said otherwise.

Adande was and still is better IMO.
