Is it possible to Trade for Cap Space?

Post#1 » by ClipperEric » Mon Jul 7, 2008 6:07 pm

Does anyone know if we can make a deal with a team under the cap, like Philly, for their cap space?

For instance, TT + #1 2009 for $6mil cap space?

We get rid of TT and get enough space to sign Brand and everybody else.

sure- but there is no way that Philly would accept that and give up all their caproom. You might have better luck finding a team with a big trade exception since they wouldn't cost themselves any caproom to take on the player. Thats how the Sonics took on Kurt Thomas

As I understand it, LAC doesn't need a whole lot of extra room to match GSW's offer.

In the other thread, I suggested Brevin Knight + some incentive for MIN's TPE. It'd save LAC $1.7 mil they could add to their Brand offer to match, and I think Brand has done enough to deserve that kind of consideration.

Philly would probably consider B Knight if you include DeAndre Jordan as the cost. That's only if Atlanta matches their expected offer to Josh Smith.

Nick Fazekas, Marcus Williams, or Josh Powell could also be included. I don't know off-hand who you have salary locked into.

MIN could take Knight and two of these other guys with TPE's to clear more cap space if the incentive was right (as could PHI with its money under the cap). LAC would need to send some incentive, and probably some cash (off the books), to provide incentive. MIN might even agree to immediately release some of these guys, if you wanted them to return to LAC. LYou would be pretty thin, but could use the MLE and sign vet min FA's (who'd probably like coming to LAC with a Brand/Baron combo) to fill the roster.

A better option would be trading Tim Thomas for Greg Buckner.

Thomas has more value and Buckner adds to a crowded backcourt in Memphis. The contracts are nearly the same, except Buckner's is three years instead of two. It is unlikely Memphis will need the cap space this year and a couple million next year is not the end of the world.

Buckner's deal can be bought out after this season for $1 mil, so he is essentially an expiring. He doesn't make enough to salary match anyway.

The idea isn't bad though -- trying to save some money through the 125% + $100,000 salary match. I checked Tim Thomas' salary, and the minimum salary that could still match is $4.76 mil.

$4.9 Rafer Alston. He's also a two year deal, but HOU may deal him because he's a PITA. LAC could use him (particularly in combination with a deal that moves Knight. This gets LAC about $1.1 mil to add to the Brand offer.

$5.1 John Salmons. He's three years ( 5,104,000 5,456,000 5,808,000 ), but can play. The Kings may do the deal simply to knock a year off Salmons deal. This swap would get LAC almost $1 mil to add to the Brand offer.

You know what...I would trade Thomas for either one of those guys. I like Alston's game and he's a huge reason why Houston went on that incredible win streak. It was because Alston was playing like an all-star during the period. I don't know how well he'd like sitting on the bench but I like his game.

John Salmons impressed me also, playing for the Kings with their stars out. He's a great role player and would help any team off the bench.

FYI, I tossed the SAC deal up on the trade board, and Kings fans didn't like it.

I didn't propose the Thomas - Alston deal.
