Elton Brand supposedly upset at Clippers?

Brand ready to trade coasts?

By Adrian Wojnarowski, Yahoo! Sports

In an improbable turn, Elton Brand is leaning toward accepting a five-year, approximately $80 million contract with the Philadelphia 76ers, multiple league sources said Tuesday afternoon.

Brand had been expected to return to the Los Angeles Clippers after opting out of $16.4 million in the final year of his contract, especially once Golden State’s Baron Davis agreed to join him in Los Angeles. Yet, Brand waited for Philadelphia general manager Ed Stefanski to create more salary-cap space for him – which he did on Monday night by dumping two contracts on Minnesota – and sources close to 76ers management say the organization believes it is close to luring away Brand.

Multiple league executives and agents now believe Brand is destined to sign with the 76ers. Even so, Clippers officials were still working furiously to convince Brand to return to the franchise where he has enjoyed great success over the past eight seasons. They hadn’t lost hope, but are fearful he could be slipping away.

What has hurt the Clippers chances of retaining Brand has been the organization’s refusal to offer anything but a “take-it-or-leave-it” deal since Golden State made its offer. People close to Brand say that stance “pissed him off,” and made him question his original desire to stay a Clipper.

The Clippers could renounce free agents such as Shaun Livingston and Corey Maggette to sweeten what’s believed to be a five-year, $70 million offer, but have resisted upping their bid. Perhaps that could change on Tuesday with the fear of losing him to the 76ers.

Losing Brand would be a horrible blow to the Clippers, who had believed him when he said he would stay for less money should they bring a talented teammate to join him. Golden State has offered the most money – as much as $95 million – but Brand, who missed all but eight games a year ago with a knee injury, had been intrigued with returning to his Eastern roots.

Brand can officially sign a contract on Wednesday when the league’s free-agency moratorium ends.

On Monday, the Sixers traded forwards Rodney Carney, Calvin Booth and a future No. 1 pick to the Minnesota Timberwolves to free as much as $2 million in additional salary cap space to offer Brand. Minnesota sent Philadelphia its $2.8 million trade exception from a 2007 deal of Mark Blount to the Miami Heat.

If it's indeed true that the Clippers aren't even considering upping the deal then they are the worst run franchise in the NBA. I mean, wouldn't you at least tweak the deal a little bit if it meant keeping Brand's loyalties? He knows after signing Davis the Clippers are at a disadvantage in regards to the cap...he's apparently asking for more than you thought he would but you have to at least try to negotiate. If it really is "take or it leave it" then Baylor and company are idiots like we've all suspected for years. The whole pay cut thing is reliant on Brand's loyalty. If you're pissing him off by that type of stance, you're just asking to be left in the cold.

This is becoming more and more anxiety-inducing the longer Brand waits to make a statement and it seems like other teams are making more of an effort to acquire him.

The whole thing doesn't make sense to me. I thought the Clips did want Elton wanted by signing Baron, yet he is unhappy? There seems to be a big communication problem w/ Elton or his agent and Clipper management. This whole contract thing with EB should have been worked out long ago. It would be a shame if he left the Clips, and we would probably never find out the truth behind the story.

It really doesn't. I thought he was willing to take a pay cut to sign Baron, but suddenly its about money as soon as the 6ers and Warriors wave it at him? Something doesn't seem right. :/ Someone needs to get fired if Elton doesn't come back this season. Otherwise I may end up rooting for some other team in the near future. I can't stand anymore of these poor front office decisions.

If that article is true, I think Brand just convinced the Clippers to offer more him more money. I believe the Clippers will be Brand's home. No worries.

^ I hope you're right, L35. You should take a look at the Phily board. Their fans are already talking about a press conference believe it or not and that Ric Bucher said it's a done deal. I don't know anymore. I was convinced Brand was true to his word but now Marc Stein says it's 70/30 he's going to the Sixers and that he wants to head east.

We'll see what type of a person Brand is tomorrow I think.

It's one thing for Elton to take less to stay with the Clippers, to accomodate signing Baron Davis. It's another if Clipper management won't budge from making a couple of minor moves to make their offer somewhat more competitive.

What's the point in NOT renouncing Maggette or Livingston to make some room to offer Brand a better contract? Livingston is effectively a UFA right now anyway, and Corey is basically gone.

Elton probably feels like Sterling is trying to take advantage of Elton's loyalty by lowballing him. Loyalty has got to go 2 ways.

This is (Please Use More Appropriate Word). Perhaps at best, now Elton will grudgingly re-sign only after Clippers are pushed into renouncing those guys to up their offer, when they really should have pro-actively done it in the first place. Elton Brand is a class act, and everyone knows exactly what they're going to get from him.

Weall know Sterling is a cheap-ass owner that refuses to go into luxury tax territory, bottom line for Sterling is to make money and thats not going to change anytime soon if ever, straight up.

It's the Clippers, what more is there to say? Some way, somehow, it just doesn't work. From Agent Zero flipping a coin to decide where to go, and after LAC came up 7 times, he said, "I have to go against the odds," and he chose Washington, to Kobe Bryant, the Clips have no luck.

It's okay, though. You guys have Al Thornton, Eric Gordon, Chris Kaman, and Baron Davis to build around. That's a nice core if you ask me.

Baron Davis has to be having second thoughts now.

Technically, Baron could still pull out of this deal with the Clippers. Dude has to be pissed right about now.

Card-Carrying Members of Clipper Nation, as a fan of team that has lost a star player in an ugly manner, my only piece of advice to you is this:

Boo like you have never booed before. You'll find all of your anger/sadness is essentially leaving your body as you boo.

Don't worry, Elton Brand is now public enemy #1 in Clipper Nation. :curse:

Wow this could end up being an epic L for the Clipper organization. If Brand leaves what reason does Baron have to stay, especially for the amount he originally agreed to? And Corey is probably already out the door too. I hope yalls FO wises up and throws everything at Brand. Hate to see something like this happen.

I did say Brand doesn't owe yall any loyalty though with the way he's been treated here. Maybe thats what soured the deal

I guarantee you that half the posters on this board have a better handle on the rules regarding the signing of players than the clowns that occupy the Clippers' front office. Their ineptitude is legendary. Can't wait for the smoke to clear and get the real story as to how this all went down. Should make for some great comedic reading.

Baylor, Dunleavy and Roeser should have been fired years ago unless they are just taking orders from Sterling for some of these FA blunders. If Brand and Maggette leaving with no compensation doesn't get these guys fired, what will?

Not to belabor a point that has been made a million times before, but the only evidence that you need point to as proof that the Clips front office is the single worst in all of professional sports is this: ELGIN BAYLOR HAS BEEN THE GM FOR OVER 20 YEARS. Strictly on merit he never should have lasted more than 20 minutes. He must really have something of a personal nature on Sterling to have lasted this long. Then again, with all the crap that has come out about Sterling over the years it would really have to be something really really bad.

How Baylor has not been fired for making the Clippers into the laughing stock of the NBA about 15 years ago is beyond me. It just means Sterling doesn't give a crap.

I'm just really really disappointed. I guess it might be another disappointing season unless we pull off some miracle.

Besides Dunleavy who probably only has power to recommend moves but not pull the trigger, the rest of the FO are simply Sterling's stooges.

In what other NBA team (or any professional sports franchise for that matter), would you have a team perform poorly as the Clippers have for 20 years, while still retaining the same GM over that period?

I venture to say none.

Sterling doesn't want a real GM who might go out and spend money. He wants a sock puppet like Baylor that he can control. Occassionally he lets Baylor spend some money because NBA teams have to. Then we go and overpay for guys like Mobley and Tim Thomas.
